There's only 2 great coaches in the game and one of them wouldnt be any better then Cleary at this point in his career.

Deadset outside of Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett. Who could you call great?

Unless we're thinking beyond his coaching career with us.

If we wanted him to replace Gould in the near future and re-sign Nathan. There's really no better way to have approached it.

Well said. Called a succession plan.

Warriors not willing to pay Johnson big. I'd be happy to give him Maloney's money and send Jimmy off to England.

They were about the only side that could shut down an expansive Souths when they'd won like 10 in a row.
And on the opposite side of the table, they beat a very structured storm twice. How can you justify what you've said above

So we ignore them missing the 8 by plenty and having the 2nd worst attack because they beat a few top teams with good defence?

Let's get real here. Where was Blake in his development in 2015 ? I suggest no where near the standard that he is now.

This from pre season 2015. He was close to FG apparently. Surely once injuries hit you'd play him

he also played city as a centre that same year. Freddy knew where he belonged.

RCG and Yeo also played in the NSW Cup GF 2014. So there were options aside from Will Smith and others.

You are either a short term fan or have a crap memory. Blake was fat and couldn't hold a ball before 2016. 2016 pre season is when he started giving a f**k about football
He wasnt fat. But he certainly wasnt ready for a full NRL season. Injuries forced him to play the whole year basically.

Like Crichton this year. He really should have played 5 or 6 games.got a taste and been developed slowly.

They're called injuries... and thry often force a coach touse unwanted players or play them in unwanted positions.

Ffs. Every coach has been forced to do it. Until you get dickheads choosing to do it at full strength (ie. Hook and Carty at 6) or ignoring better options after seeing them its a bit harsh to judge them. Who was better? The injured Rennings? Injured Gennings? Injured Moylan shifting DWZ to 1?

So playing Will Smith at 6 with Blake in NSW Cup is ok because it is Cleary but Carty at 6 when Hook does it isn't... Makes sense

When are you even f**king talking about? How many games did this happen for?

If youre referring to 2014 give yourself an uppercut. Blake was not close to ready for NRL then. He struggled in 2015 ffs. Although a few games in 2014 might have sped his development up

Edit
Couldn't have worked in 2014. We had Whare and Idris in great form. So must mean 2015 where Blake played most the season anyway.

Read the article I posted. Pre season in 2014 when we played Yeo at centre that was meant to be Blake but he lost too much weight while hurt.. The end of the year he was fine to play

So your solution in 2014 was what?

Move Jamal Idris or Dean Whare out of the centres to debut a 19yo kid?

Or to move Moylan to half where he would be learning, DWZ to fullback where he would also be learning (im ok with both of those) to then debut Waqa Blake on the wing which you bagged Ivan out for doing a year later? Those scenarios are both worsw than Will Smith at 6. Deadset.

Our 3/4 pairing was perfect in 2014 and would have been crazy to tinker with it. Fast forward to 2015 though:

Waqa Blake played 18/24 games. Debuting in Round 5 at centre after Jamal Idris was out for the season. He played 7 games at centre before shuffling between centre and wing depending on injuries. Finishing with 11 games at centre. 7 on the wing.

As a winger he was behind Josh Mansour, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, George Jennings, Robert Jennings and David Simmons. He needed 4 injuries to winger and/or fullback before Ivan used him on the wing.

Will Smith first played Round 8... so Waqa Blake was well and truly ahead of him.

My preference would have been Moylan to 6 and DWZ to 1 in 2015. As Moylan was always a very limited fullback. But at the time DWZ had played about 10 games of NRL and it was understandable not to rush it and develop 2 players in new positions at once. Once DWZ got a crack and killed it though. Moylan was long gone and then so was DWZ.

We didnt get to see whether Ivan would have went with Moylan at 6 knowing he had a kick ass fullback in DWZ.

Ivan hesitated to make big changes unforced. Which was definitely a flaw. But if injury forced a decision and it worked he stuck with it.

I dont think Ivan is perfect. Nor do i agree with alot of his decisions. But he usually ended up making the right call and he got the best out of most players.

He has done great with young halves and experienced halves. He took Maloney to his first ever grand final.he would have done more work then anyone in developing Nathan.

Hes coming fresh off having Luke Brooks win the Dally M halfback of the year and getting Benji to put in a solid year. Not sure why more people arent excited by him working that magic with better halves.

Perhaps not great, but there are people out there that have achieved more than Cleary.

In 11 seasons as a first grade coach he’s made the top 4 only twice.

I know he’s been rebuilding some clubs, but that’s terribly average.

I just don’t see why you’d move mountains for him.

Our last 3 coaching appointments there hasn’t been a proper interview process. They wanted someone and went out and got them. Who’d have confidence in that given the past failures?

Double standards when it comes to judging Hook & Ivan? I for one am in pure shock.

Not from me.

It was said at the time appointing Hook to replace Cleary was a sideways movement, agreed with that then & I see no reason to change my mind.

Cleary is marginally better, but when you’re making a significant appointment you want more than that.
