Parramatta Eels and NSW Blues winger Blake Ferguson has revealed he was on the verge of kidney failure and held genuine fears for his rugby league career after suffering a mysterious allergic reaction last month.

The 29-year-old's knee became infected after he played in the Eels' Round 17 victory over Wests Tigers at Bankwest Stadium, just four days after starring for the Blues in Origin III.

Ferguson, who remains sidelined, told News Limited's Michael Carayannis he had an initial procedure that failed to reduce the swelling and was subsequently booked in for a minor knee cleanout.

What was supposed to be a routine surgery soon turned dire when the former Cronulla, Canberra and Sydney Roosters star suffered a rare reaction to the antibiotics he was prescribed.

Things got so bad he was told he was 'one bad blood test away' from kidney failure.

The reason for the extreme allergic reaction remains a mystery, however, Ferguson told Carayannis his kidneys are once agains back to full function.

He revealed he broke down in tears at one stage and slept for two days straight as his body struggled to combat the reaction.

f**k that’s unlucky, will be interesting if the rest sees him come back refreshed and fired up or lacking a bit of form and producing sum mistakes. As for Fifita, this guy ticks all the boxes , I would b shocked if the donks lose a wanted player

Seems very strange to look at signing a 32y.o. not already at the club. As it is I think Mennings for another 2 years is a big risk.

There's another former origin middle forward who'll be 32 next year and is still available. No serious injury history, and I have a suspicion he's got a soft spot for Parra.

You reckon a 32 year old career plodder is gonna suddenly turn into a superstar?

Prior is rubbish, better (and probably cheaper) to just keep Gower or something.
Prior struggles to get through a game these days, agreed Gower for a year probably offers more at a cheaper price.

Matt Prior: 32 years old, 105kg, Avg 90m a game, 20 games with only 12 tackle busts and 10 offloads all year. 27 tackles a game at 91% efficiency. And at his age he will be declining. What does he offer that Gower or even Mannah don't?
