Parramatta Eels and NSW Blues winger Blake Ferguson has revealed he was on the verge of kidney failure and held genuine fears for his rugby league career after suffering a mysterious allergic reaction last month.
The 29-year-old's knee became infected after he played in the Eels' Round 17 victory over Wests Tigers at Bankwest Stadium, just four days after starring for the Blues in Origin III.
Ferguson, who remains sidelined, told
News Limited's Michael Carayannis he had an initial procedure that failed to reduce the swelling and was
subsequently booked in for a minor knee cleanout.
What was supposed to be a routine surgery soon turned dire when the former Cronulla, Canberra and Sydney Roosters star
suffered a rare reaction to the antibiotics he was prescribed.
Things got so bad he was told he was 'one bad blood test away' from kidney failure.
The reason for the extreme allergic reaction remains a mystery, however, Ferguson told Carayannis his kidneys are once agains back to full function.
He revealed he broke down in tears at one stage and slept for two days straight as his body struggled to combat the reaction.
