australias national football code ....
that runs on secondary channels mainly in NSW the ACT & QLD where almost 15 million people live because no one watches it
lol
national my arse
Tbf it is Australia's national football code.

Once Tasmania gets it own team there will be an AFL club in every single state excluding the two territories.

the correct way to de centralise sydney & have teams in all markets was to copy the AFL model for their first 2 teams in NSW & QLD, by moving 2 old dying Melb clubs to Sydney & Brisbane.
Now , in the 1980's there was no TV money to prop up these clubs like there is now & those 2 clubs had to go. If there was no TV money around then another 4 or 5 Sydney NRL clubs would have folded due to natural causes. If offered an opportunity to survive in another market using their old logo & colours in Melb Brisbane , Perth & Adelaide these clubs would have taken it.
We would have an extremely high quality 16 team comp

5 teams in Sydney
2 in Brisbane
1 in
Melbourne
Perth
Adelaide
Gold Coast
Newcastle
Canberra
Townsville
NZ x2

But , big TV dollars will just keep these Sydney clubs hanging on & there is no reason to move.

it isn't
a national code is dominant "nationally "
the AFL isn't this
just plonking teams in areas where it isn't the code of choice does not make it national.
would the NFL be put on a secondary channel in New York or Chicago ?
Never...
its a national code

Yet we have our largest & 3rd largest states not particularly interested in AFL.

If you remember the Brisbane/Fitzroy merger was a complete fluke.

All along Fitzroy wanted to merge with North Melbourne and the Kangaroos wanted it but the other clubs were frightened of a North Fitzroy Kangaroos side being a superclub with some of the few genuine stars Fitzroy had on top of North's premiership winning list.

I don't remember , because i don't care

regardless , it was the way to do it back then.
Now our Sydney clubs are spoilt by TV money. I just wish someone had said in 1982/83 to Newtown .. hey you're gone
but...
How about we relocate you so your logo & colours live on ?

the Brisbane Jets

The weird thing is Newtown left Henson the year they got booted.

They had moved to Campbelltown that year.

Both Newtown and Wests got booted that year and ironically it was Wests that moved to Campbelltown.

A variable grant scheme will just make the richer clubs like Brisbane and Easts richer and the poorer clubs poorer.

Do we really want a joke competition like Spanish La Liga football where Real Madrid and Barcelona get the bulk of the cash and the rest of the league fights over the scraps.
Not sure you understand how they work, they work the opposite to that, the rich clubs get smaller grants and the poor clubs bigger.in afl it ranges from rich clubs like WC Eagles getting $13mill to new or poor clubs getting $25mill

It'd never work in RL, rich clubs like Easts, Brisbane and Melbourne would whinge if they got a smaller slice of the pie.

take it a step further in 1983 & offer the same to Wests , rather then move from lidcombe to campbelltown
move them to newcastle

Balmain to ?
Bears to ?

idk
could have been a very different comp if not for Murdochs money

The other thing to note is the Swans also had a cost of living allowance in place and the Melbourne clubs especially Collingwood jumped up and down about it.

Bit rose coloured glasses, when you look at growth in participation rates, membership and attendances of clubs, development of players to top tier in those states then it’s hard to argue that afl hasn’t got itself a pretty decent footprint in the two nrl states in just 30 years. In another 50 they will be the dominant sport right across Australia unless rugby league gets its sht together. We are now thirty years behind them and running out of time.

That would've been a piss poor move though.

The south west of Sydney has been a growth area for years that would've been unrepresented had Newtown and Wests not moved there.

If they instead created four new Sydney clubs (north south, east, west)
How did this work for the RU attempt at doing the same thing?

You assume one thing - fans follow players, when in reality fans follow clubs

There has only been one ever rep team in Sydney at the top tier, not 4

It would have been interesting to see how attendances, metchanise sales and TV auduances played out in what would gave been two competitions going head to head

I couldnt see fans invest hard earned cash on a plastic team, when they invest the same amounts for their tribal team

No doubt, which is why we remain where we are, too much self Inet rest and too weak a leadership. Doesn’t help that the clubs are pretty sht at growing their businesses either so always come from a point of weakness. Not onlynis west coast happy to receive half the grant of some other clubs but they also pay the wafl millions of $’s a year in license fee which funds WA grassroots. Imagining saying to Sydney clubs they all had to pay nswrl $5mill a year each for the right to play in the nrl!

Like I said earlier the AFL is the least of league's concerns.

If rugby union can get their shit together league has a serious problem.

I've long suspected had Australia followed Wales' lead instead of following England, league would never have started in this country and the Wallabies wouldn't be in the middle of a 20 year Bledisloe draught like we are.

For god’s sake there are 13 soon to be 14 other clubs. You give them a vote each. Why is there always this attitude - you would literally never make a decision in business or life in general if your only thought is potential consternation or somebody being offended

You're somewhat missing the point though.

Even though the ARLC is supposed to be an independent commission like the AFL the inmates (clubs and the various state bodies) are running the asylum.
