More australians watch our game then the AFL
we slaughtered them in the ratings .. again .. in 2021 & in half of the country it wasn't even a contest. They aint national.
They will never hold sway over RL in its heartland & thats just the way it will be.

AFL grows TV viewership during 2020 to stretch lead over NRL - Roy Morgan Research

The latest data from Roy Morgan shows over 7.5 million Australians aged 14+ (36%) watched AFL matches on TV at least occasionally in 2020 including AFL pre-season games, AFL Home & Away games, AFL Finals, the AFL Women’s competition or the show-piece AFL Grand Final.

Different demographic too, currently we've got a similar problem to cricket in the UK is it's predominantly watched by old farts.

The AFL is destroying us in the younger demographic at present.

They have the revenue, the asset base, the top tier club footprint and the strategy everyone is ok with to keep forging ahead with that goal. They’ve also got nrl running scared and keeping their eye in their own backyard meaning no threat to their own heartlands. They’ll never be the biggest sport in nsw and qlnd, at least not in my lifetime, but they know they dont need to be. They just need to be the biggest in the rest of the country and significant in those two states. Don’t forget 90% of tv advertising in australia is spent in metro markets. There’s a reason their tv deals continue to be significantly higher and their revenue 50% greater than the nrl‘s.

Isn't AFL bigger than league in southern and far western NSW?

Pretty sure it's mainly AFL south of Wagga.

Comparing league with Alf is a mistake, different sports completely, Alf will never leave aus borders, league is played in more countries overseas and can grow beyond just NSW & QLD, time is the only factor, in which ALF has spent all its effort in ingraining those two heartland league states in becoming somwhat viable...
If NRL went and plonked a team in Adelaide and Perth it would sink AFL in ratings as it has with one storm in Melbourne, seriously how does the current draft system in AFL make their comp credible... it doesn't its a shame purely coz they can't produce local nsw and qld juniors the same way we moan about Victoria not growing talent for NRL.. im accepting the fact NRL can't do it in vic, due to the amount of alf clubs there, but we have all the chips in making a national code more viable for years ahead than the ALF and their proping up of the swans, suns, giants and lions.. it cant go on forever no matter how many years they think they can throw money at it

It's the Barassi Line (named after former Melbourne, North Melbourne and Swans coach Ron Barassi). About 600K on the other side if the Far West and south of Wagga is counted.

Once Tasmania gets it own team there will be an AFL club in every single state excluding the two territories.

Northern Territory and ACT don't have one.

Its always dependant on who the teams are tho, especially since it was held at suncorp too, covid has affected most attendances, along with the media hounding of the panthers... but yeah there's lots of reasons why figures are skewed either which way... most folk buy into the derolík panthers and scum from souths and have inclings to tune off especially if they were a fan of a team these guys beat to get there... but true fans of league and good time will go to a local pub or gathering to watch the GF

Like I said they don’t need to take over nsw and qlnd, just be significant and they are well on that journey. Meanwhile nrl is pretty much Insignificant outside of nsw and qlnd. The race is on and we are currently 5 laps behind. But yeh keep laughing and don’t choke on the sand with your head buried that deep.

Albury has 55K people
