I thought that until I met the Dockers a few years ago. There was quite a few around the 6ft 2-4 and 95-105kg mark. i was looking at them thinking what great wingers And centres they’d make if they could tackle!
I had the misfortune of watching an afl game last year. What I noticed was nearly every player was white and thin. I drank a lot of beer and generally had a rather forgettable night.

So between Round 1 and round 4 afl lost just shy of 2 million viewers or 30 % of its` audience. Bloody hell that`s a lot of people turning off.
NRL lost 650K or 12 % of its` audience.

We don`t get a lot of information on New Zealand Rugby League ratings but came across these NZ union ratings for super rugby today.
2015 - 2019 average ~185k +
2021 average 140k
2022 (so far) 103k
In a word - calamitous.
Reasons given: too many games of the same teams playing each other over and over, not surprising given their 5 team comp.
Here is a country ripe for being introduced to a full-schedule season of FTA NRL with its` wonderful 18 team competition, yes that`s another Kiwi side.
Interesting side note: highest rating game this season ( double the average ) RTS`s debut. And you tell me that Kiwi`s don`t follow League.

Lmao that ratings collapse is hilarious. Super rugby as a 12 team competition was a decent competition to the nrl.

they added too many teams and the quality of the competition started to fall. Then they lost the south african teams and that is something they won’t recover from

even if the bring back a new competition with maybe ten teams in total the damage has been done

nz is a massive growth market for rugby league and something which helps the sport grow in an area which afl just doesn’t have the guts to expand too. They would rather a team in Tasmania than a team in Auckland

The article I saw it on was one about young All-Black super star Caleb Clarke saying he definitely wanted to play League one day, probably after the next union WC. What struck me in the comments section was how many respondents said plenty more where he came from. Shows to me what a potential gold-mine NZ is for new players.

Since the collapse of union here look how many good players we’ve gotten who would normally go to the wallabies eg keary, Crichton, Murray, suaali, taffe

and union has small grassroots here. Imagine how many more nrl players we could have if we tapped New Zealand juniors in a similar way

and that’s still ignoring tonga Fiji Samoa and png. This is why I never see player depth as an issue for rugby league in terms of how many teams we want to add

The thing with AFL is if they all played basketball which would suit their height and frame the Boomers might be a gold medal chance and not just being content for the bronze like we got in Tokyo last year.
