You think PNG is on par with Paris in terms of news coverage in the Western world?

Be honest, how many bongs have you pulled today?
No but a farmers strike is one rung up from someone tripping on a crack on the footpath on any news cycle. There’s countries in Africa that general public haven’t heard of but they make the news because they have a drought but violent riots won’t make the news because it’s PNG?

Run me through the great gamut of African news in the Australian mainstream media in the last decade?

Rugby League in PNG isn't making World wide news

They beat a fiji team full of nrl players before a full house
Yeah, most of them probably had to miss the other three matches to afford to attend the Final against Fiji, but then again it was two tickets for the price of one so they probably went halves.

No but villagers causing a violent riot just over a game of ’rugby’ would because it’s just too bizarre not to. That was the context of my original post - not that PNG or RL has any global significance

Fuzzy wuzzy angels did a lot of serious fighting in ww2 unlike the French

Totally agree but how many people around the world know about the fuzzy wuzzy angels. I am not saying it is right but a country like PNG is not going to be making headlines unless something absolutely cataclysmic happens and even then it is barely on the register.

I will give you an example do you get much news about conflicts going on in Africa compared to say Russia -Ukraine or Israel -Palestine?

So news ltd spending $100mill on them is bs. Glad we cleared that up.

Got this from Wookie's site.

Melbourne Storm Financials

Periodically certain AFL leaning folks bring up the Melbourne Storms funds and debt profile over the years.

In 2010, Crikey noted that the Storm had been losing 6 million a year, with News covering the losses.

In 2012, the Australian Rugby League Commission guaranteed $26.5 million over the next six years to Melbourne Storm with the express aim to being “to keep the game thriving in Victoria”.

In March 2012, Roy Masters remarked that the Storm were losing 8 million a year.

In August 2013, Fairfax reported that the Storm had been overspending to the tune of between $2 million and $5 million for 15 years. This shortfall had been financed by News Ltd and the amount spent by the club does not seem to be falling since the salary cap scandal in 2010.

The Storm football club spent about $20 million a year, or about $2-$4 million more than most other clubs except for the wealthy Broncos. The new consortium of owners, led by New Zealander Bart Campbell, were projecting the club will break even in five years, which is a long time to be losing money.

In June 2015, Fairfax quoted Storm owner Bart Campbell.

“Our lofty aspiration is to be solvent – that meaning cash comes in, cash comes out and at the end of the year the books balance. We are not in that position yet, but we have funds so it’s not all woe is me, but we believe over time there will be a business in this town called Melbourne Storm that is solvent and if we make profits we will re-invest them.”

In August 2015, The Australian Financial Review reported that the Storm turned over about $25 million annually, a figure that put it in the top half of the league, and had a membership base of about 15,000 but average crowds of about 14,000.

The clubs owners also bought a local hotel with hope the facility will offset continued financial losses for the Storm, which effectively breaks even each season but only after receiving an additional $26.5 million over six years as part of the terms of News Corp, once owner of the club, exiting its half-stake in the NRL in 2012.

On September 30th, 2016 Storm partowner Matthew Tripp was quoted in the Australian Financial Review

“I think we are at the break-even stage now and we can be profitable next year,” Tripp told AFR Weekend. “But we are not necessarily in this for the money. This club has been built on a great culture … we’ve got those legends playing for us and a fantastic coach in Craig Bellamy. The leadership they show is fantastic, and they really set the standards for the younger guys coming through.”

Okay PNG v Cook Islands, look at the crowd ?.
But rugby league is their National sport, it shouldn’t matter who is playing, maybe it does ?.
Maybe the PNG people wouldn’t climb trees to watch the Dragons play the Tigers after all lol.

It would be interesting to see how many Pacific Islanders in Sydney get behind the team. If it played its games out of Parramatta Stadium then it might draw a good crowd.

How did they fill their stadium for the pacific cup games with nrl priced tickets ?
They didn’t, they were pretty empty until they opened the gates and filled it up. Only the final looked full from kick off. And it’s only a 15k stadium. Perth drew a bigger crowd for France v england than most of the pacific cup games in Port Moresby lol.

How England are still rated a Tier Nation after recent losses to Tonga, Samoa, PNG and NZ amazes me but apparently Australia, NZ and England can’t lose their Tier 1 rating as they have major competitions held in their countries.
On expansion I find it very odd that PNG are currently top of the tree (pardon the pun) for the 18th franchise yet no NRL games have been test run over there.
When the Central Coast Bears were absolutely smashing their bid between 2011 and 2014 we held many NRL games at Blue Tongue Stadium reaching capacity of over 20,000 many times, Perth has continuously drawn healthy crowds, the Dolphins packed out their Stadium when they hosted a few NRL games yet why are no NRL games being played in PNG ?.
Is there no money to be made for the NRL by promoting NRL games there ?, is it to dangerous despite QLD Cup sides currently playing over there ?, I’ll go with the 1st option, unless the Aust Govt’s money is involved it just isn’t worth it to the NRL clubs and the NRL, FACTS.
