No word on attendance yesterday about from Nigel Wood saying crowd is bigger for today.

It looked bare.

Rather see a double header at St.James.
If it wasn’t for vegas I’d like to see super league try an all Lancashire double header season opener at the newly expanded etihad stadium or something similar like an all Yorkshire double header at elland road when the redevelopment is completed.

manchester etihad stadium double header

wigan v leigh

st Helens v Warrington

leeds elland road double header

leeds v Wakefield

hull fc v hull kr

The news that Super League will return to the American stage in 2026, with Wigan and Catalans Dragons also set to meet in a special 30th anniversary fixture in Paris, is a boost to the competition after holding its Magic Weekend event back at St James’ Park for the first time since 2023.

A crowd of 64,256, the largest since 2018 and the best Sunday attendance since 2013 at Etihad Stadium, attended the two days and six games of Super League action held in Newcastle.

“It’s been a successful and enjoyable return to Newcastle for Super League, and we are delighted to have attracted our highest Magic attendance for seven years including the best-ever Sunday crowd,” said Rhodri Jones, the managing director of RL Commercial.

Super League ‘Magic Weekend’ results

  • Leigh Leopards 26-24 Catalans Dragons
  • Hull Kingston Rovers 54-0 Salford Red Devils
  • St Helens 4-17 Leeds Rhinos
  • Huddersfield Giants 12-10 Hull FC
  • Wigan Warriors 22-20 Warrington
  • Castleford Tigers 4-22 Wakefield Trinity
“It maintains the momentum that has been building since our record opening night attendance in February, the historic Super League fixture in Las Vegas in March, and a record-breaking Rivals Round in April.

The Magic Weekend event was introduced in 2007 and has been held in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds over the past 18 years, but has been most popular on Tyneside.

The i Paper understands the RFL have agreed a deal for Magic Weekend to come back to Newcastle next year.

Needs to be getting much more than this for me and attract more locals.

first couple of years in Newcastle threatened 70k.
It is in top 3 rounds for attendance for the season. Best magic weekend attendance on a sunday since 2013 (when there was 14 teams), best overall attendance since 2018.
32k each day for 3 games is fine. SL makes some money, gets more media attention and fans have a good time. Whats not to like?

All fair points and indisputable facts but I honestly thought and think Newcastle could be so much more successful crowd wise in terms of attracting even bigger crowds and more locals.

Its doing fine, hopefully it grows but looking at historical data 62-67k is the norm attendance for the event. Its incredibly difficult getting people to buy tickets to a sport they have no interest in.

I had so much hope for RL in the north east region 4-5 years ago with the thunder playing at Kingston park and getting investment from the guy who owned the falcons etc.

there also seemed to be a lot of grassroots development going on in the region at the time as well.

Its certainly one of those areas with potential. But even with big money backing union has struggled there. Like Salford, these cities are so dominated by football it leaves little room for anything else. Falcons have crowds on par with Huddersfield and are soon to go bust unless they can find another rich person willing to waste money.

Magic weekend produced the 4th biggest crowd avg of the season.

SL crowd watch

Rd1 Avg: 12,582
Rd2 Avg: 9,322
Rd 3 Avg 8,984*
Rd 4 Avg 12,261
Rd 5 Avg 9,848
Rd 6 Avg 9,130
Rd 7 Avg 9,968
Rd 8 Avg 14,347

Rd 11 should produce some good crowds with only cas v salford looking like a dud.

We finally beat Saints comfortably...God they look dreadful now....can barely make a set without dropping the ball. I would sincerely hope Warmsley is no way near the conversation for the Ashes now....looks old

Hoping Wello hangs on to his job to really grind them into the dust for this season
