  • In Victoria, age plays a big role. The 55+ crowd are the key drivers of the AFL’s dominance. Meanwhile, younger Victorians (18–34) are significantly less likely to back AFL compared to the State average, showing stronger interest in UFC.
  • In New South Wales, 55+ Australians are still the most loyal to Rugby League. But younger Sydneysiders are branching out, leaning into UFC, NBA, and MLB.

Last yeae was a little hard we didnt get finals data for fox. Higher than anythingf i know of in 2023. Week 3 finals in 2022 and 2021 hit 2m audiences. As far as Week 1 finals go, this is probably a record - my data only goes back to 2010.
Obviously the quality of the game helped but it’s extra impressive with the raiders being a low drawing team. I doubt they make it but a dogs v broncos prelim would be a big ratings winner.

Channel 9 would be extremely happy with the leadin work the NRL did with the News and the Block. Completely won them the night.

Bodes well for future finals ratings too. The finish and result have been shared pretty widely on social media. Could lead to some level of FOMO. Just in comparison to last years final series - i remember everyone was pretty sure who was making the Grand Final from Week 1 and the final series was a bit dour.

Google Trends shows we beat their week 2 finals with our week 1 finals in Australia.

Even more pronounced in Worldwide interest

Which continues the rise of NRL search interest Worldwide (on track currently to beat them this year. If trends continue, 2024 may be the last time the AFL will beat NRL in worldwide online search interest).

Really cool data. Just again reflects what we’ve seen with crowds, ratings and social media metrics. The popularity of the NRL has just exploded and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why.

Though it also shows that the AFL is still really strong despite what you read on here.

The nrl is very popular as it’s gladiatorial, and most teams can beat each other. I don’t think that’s the case for most sports in the world. It would be hard to be a better. Anything is possible should be the slogan for the nrl. It’s becoming increasingly competitive and elite. We can raid rugby for the best up and coming players and soon - let’s take SA & Argentinian players. All blacks are a bore.

I often wonder what American football fans be it NFL, college and CFL think about the NRL when they see it for the first time with teams called the Broncos and Raiders and the faster style of play....they must think it's like there sport compared to Rugby Union.

Better visualisation of worldwide trends over the past 20+ years. Came from a long way back and now beginning to move ahead.

What`s with the dotted line at the end of the NRL trend-line, does that mean it`s a projection only ?
Incomplete data. Wont be a solid line until Jan 1 2026. So far this year that is what the trend is. Currently 100 vs 93. So 7 point lead in interest since Jan 1 2025. Chart is likely to look a little different by Jan 1st 2026 depending on a few things:
- if AFL has an outsized search interest over the next few months compared fo NRL. Or vice versa (if the NRL gets a greater ratio than 107.5% of the AFL's interest).
- the exact trendline for both for 2025 is likely to shift up, up until Grand Final. Then both lines should shift down (fairly evenly). Outside of some unexpected interest post season, I woudnt expect the ratio to change much post GF. This is a projection based on if the average interest was sustained throughout the rest of the year.

Should also note, its only a dotted line for the NRL, but the AFL is also projected. Think its because the NRL is above, so they give that a dotted line.

NRL interest should stay strong into November with the international season

During the Pacific Champs last year - didn't seem to create much impact, I think due to it coming under a different competition, it maybe doesn't register as much. Similar to the international Cricket not having as much impact on the the BBL - or State of Origin not having much impact on the seach volume either (see below).

Little bump in November is the AFL draft fyi. All 3 State of Origins had equal to or more interest than the equivalent AFL round this year, data is broken up into weeks in this view.

AFL Finals Week 1 and Week 2 have had unprecedented low interest this year (outside of Covid years), usually they are increasing from the last round until the Grand Final.

NRL Grand Final looks generally unremarkable compared to AFL Grand Final interest, but this only because the weeks periods end at 11am EST Sunday. So the leadin week and actual Grand Final are split into seperate weeks. So last year you had a week of no NRL games prior to the Grand Final that still got 29 and the actual Grand Final and the week after got 52. Would be up around 80 if the Grand Final was on the Saturday. + the AFL Grand Final last year had really solid interest, being Sydney v Brisbane - and the normal Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide audience tuning in no matter what (similar as what was seen in TV Ratings). That can't be repeated again this year. So should see their GF drop a bit in interest this year, also going with the low interest in finals so far - I think alot of their fans have already clocked out for the year.

If you add State of Origin interest and Internationals interest, we're probably already well ahead.

Thank you.
Although I would like to think that ours should shift down proportionately less due to searches related to the Pacific Championships and Ashes tours done through the NRL website.

Would you be able to compare, on a national and international level, the NRL v AFL v Super Rugby Pacific v French Top 14 v Gallagher PREM v Currie Cup ?

Would make for very interesting reading, especially some crossover into NZ for NRL via Warriors.
