I have only lived in the UK for 2 years and only spent around 99% of my time there - but I have seen advertisements around for upcoming matches. Not huge advertising campaigns though

It is not an excuse. I am saying that because English soccer and the AFL have a large amount of season ticket holders, they do not have to continually advertise their matches to get crowds.
If the NRL wants big crowds then the clubs should put their advertising money into getting more season ticket holders

Amen. We can certainly agree on that.

Its just that far too often someone on this thread says "they should have promoted it better and we would have got such-a-such crowd."

Well sorry there wasn't another thread on the Manly game tonight.

There's a match thread for every game, and a crowd watch thread where most of the time, and the crowd is posted within minutes of it becoming public knowledge.

As an aside, those wanting a quick crowd figure - usually the telegraph website comes up with it quickest - http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/nrl and click the match across the middle of the screen you're after.

Just a heads up re: the game at Suncorp on Fri night - its likely to piss down late Thurs/early Fri at this stage and clearing before the game (50-100mm in Brisbane is definitely not off the cards) so hopefully this doesn't scare too many people away. I'll be there rain hail or shine :D

so we are on average 85 fans short per game of breaking the all time highest average crowd record ever and people say crowds are bad this year?

As someone said, it's the negative vibe. To be fair we've let AFL improve far too much and that's why our crowds look so bad, particularly when we play so many games at venues like ANZ.

yeah, im not too fussed about AFL.

theyve been pushing the idea of season tickets for decades more than we have.

as long as our crowds are good from our perspective im happy.

this year all the popular teams have had average years at best.

souths, dogs and tigers are the big sydney clubs crowd wise. the dogs and souths have had poor seasons and still got 15,000, in time that will be 20,000 +.

people whinge these days when we get under 10,000 for a crowd.

in the 80s, we hardly broke the 10,000 crowd mark for most games.

now we get 30,000 for some games in sydney, and are pushing to break the 40,000 mark in a few seasons as well.

I'm not sure where it's at now but this year it took far longer for us to manage a crowd under 10k at all.

There's just too much demand for success now.

There's just too much demand for success now.

people look at AFL crowds and get insecure ours arent like theirs.

tbf to that sport, theyve worked at it for decades.

our idea of a marketing push is for one year or so, then people give up.

all it takes is for one sydney club to get really big crowds, and then it will be a bandwagon for the rest.

cheap season tickets are the key.

AFL does it, so should we.

especially with anz stadium guaranteeing clubs $80,000 per game, clubs should then get ST up as this gets them more money,

So what do we need this weekend to break the record???

To beat the all time aggregate attendance set in 1995 the aggregate for the last round needs to be about 190,000 (ave 23,750)

To beat last year, we need over 150,000 (ave 18,750)

To beat the all time average of 2005 we need about 290,000 (ave 36,250)

We could be a chance of beating last year I reckon

in the 80s, we hardly broke the 10,000 crowd mark for most games.

.

Back then though Parra could pack out Parra Stadium and Manly could pack out Brookie (both got over 27k once).

Manly don't seem to get anywhere near 20k anymore. I know Brookie doesn't hold 27k anymore, but you'd expect the odd 20k crowd with them up the top of the ladder. Their averages seem around the same tho.

people look at AFL crowds and get insecure ours arent like theirs.

tbf to that sport, theyve worked at it for decades.

our idea of a marketing push is for one year or so, then people give up.

all it takes is for one sydney club to get really big crowds, and then it will be a bandwagon for the rest.

Disagree. "Cheap season tickets" or not, i cannot see the likes of the Saints, Dogs or Rabbito's creating the bandwagon effect to generate big crowds over a 12-48 or yonda period. The AFL clubs do not have "cheap" ttckets to games as such but membership packages (6, 12, 18 & 24) The latter is around $800.00 with voting rights.

There's been a slight increase in the sub-10,000 crowds count for 2008 vs 2007. But - significantly - 16 of the 33 sub-10,000 crowds have been 9,000-odd.

Looking at the individual club stats - it's pretty clear Penrith have let the whole NRL down as far as crowds go. They have had a total of 10 sub-10,000 crowds over 2 seasons 2007-2008 (with another match coming up this weekend). Their record is atrotious and the NRL should send the Panthers an edict to do something about their crowds or else. For them to have such a big junior league yet such bad crowds indicates that there is something really rotten out Penrith way.

Penrith are the biggest mystery to me. They have one of the biggest junior bases in Rugby League, they have a super rich leagues club pumping money in, yet after 41 years all they have to show for this are 2 Grand Final wins, a scattering of finals appearences (never more than 3 in a row) and mediocre crowds. The administration out Penrith way really needs a shakeup.

look at the crowd averages for each club in the 80s.

and look at the crowds across the league
