I have no idea if true but at the time it was suggested that he did not meet his commitments and thus 9 did not pay him. Again take with a grain of salt as it is simply pub style talk.

Also if 9 didnt pay him and he did meet his commitments, doesnt a contract mean they are obliged to pay him? Why not just take the matter to court, surely thats illegal?

Channel 9 are run by an AFL buffoon and likely have a f**kload more money than Gasnier does to fight it out.....

I don't think he is short of a coin. I've not heard of any first grade player that wants to be beaten on the field. There's your incentive.

A lot of elite players continue on after 'retirement', playing for very little in the country for example.

It may sound like glass-half-full stuff, but these blokes just love playing the game. And especially for those professionals that make it to first grade, they love winning.

Hopefully you are right there, does he have a 2nd career? If not football is his life / sense of worth etc.

Personally i'm hoping that the stint in France has got the 'lingering curiosity' out of his head, he must have wondered.. what is life like in the other code? Whats life like overseas, and out of the limelight?

Now he has tried both & realised it wasnt for him, and that should give him the perspective he needs. It must have been wonderful in France to walk down the street unmolestered, but there are plenty of other trade-offs.. such as err... having to live in France.. and really every other NRL star is in exactly the same boat.

As for elite players playing on... the only difference between Gasnier and a few others, is that were still paying him some serious coin in the back end of his career (not like Sailor for example). Anyway that's enough negative from me, I cant wait to see if he can regain some form and stay fit, god knows id love to have some right-side options available in attack, Morris+Cooper/Stanley vs Gasnier+Nightingale = Yes Please!

Pub talk indeed.

Can't answer the legal side of it. We don't know all the details of the contract. For all we know, Gasnier's only option was to walk away if they reneged on the deal.

By media reports Gasnier was getting increasingly frustrated that the NRL endorsed third party payments were not coming through as promised. He had earlier knocked back big bucks to play in Union.

It is a joke that Gus does all this chest beating about players leaving the comp yet when his employer hung Gaz out to dry where was the outrage?

If Gus was genuine he could have shamed 9 into honoring their contract. A weak attention seeking prick with no substance. f**k Gus!

I agree and this is true for a lot of sports. Once a competitor has secured some sort of financial security and they are after the midway of their career, things like how many championships, premierships, medals, etc become a big thing.

Mark Webber is a good example. He is now in a competitive car and no doubt is being paid well but I bet you he would drive for nothing if it meant being in a car that could win him that world championship.

The Gaz column is a good read - he might be the best writer the Telecrap has lol. Insightful, well written and even a sense of humour

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...to-being-in-form/story-e6frext9-1225889606603

OF COURSE I would like to play Origin for NSW again - I just have to learn to catch the ball again. Seriously though, I was fortunate enough to be out at Olympic Park on Wednesday night for the third game of this year's Origin series, speaking at a corporate event with Lote Tuqiri.
It brought me right back to reality about how much work I have to do if I ever want to get out of the corporate suite and out on the field again. The players these days are playing such good, consistent football. Without question, I'd like to wear the sky blue jumper again - but I've only played one game for the Dragons.
There's a long way to go.
The function I attended allowed a few curly questions to be thrown at me from the floor and one guest asked: "Sorry to put you on the spot, but should players returning from rugby union be allowed to play for their state or country?"
That's a decision to be made at management level, but I don't think that would solve any problems with people leaving the code.

The biggest endorsement the game can receive is when a player returns.

Ultimately they still have to be playing well enough to deserve representative honours. And they aren't coming back just for those jumpers anyway. They are coming back to play the game.
The biggest thing people are crying out for is for a salary cap system that rewards loyalty to long-serving players in the game.
For example, Steve Menzies should have never retired in Super League. What the fans don't want is a system that allows players to up their price to stop them allegedly changing codes.
I was also asked about this current Queensland side, because I was playing against them when they started this five-year Origin reign.
I was certainly playing the night when they won Origin III in Melbourne in 2006, when poor old Brett Hodgson threw that pass with seconds remaining that handed Darren Lockyer the try that clinched the series.
It's started from there for them and I have to admit I never envisaged they would win as many series as they have.
While this Queensland side is undoubtedly one of the greats, NSW did themselves no favours by making too many errors on Wednesday night. With Origin footy, if you put yourself under pressure for just 10 minutes early in the match - as the Blues did - you feel it by about the 72nd and 73rd minutes.
Where to from here for NSW?
A lot has been said and written about how many changes have been made to the side.
You can look at so many factors but, at the end of the day, if a coach wants to coach a certain way, they should pick the players who will match his style.
I know Ricky Stuart copped some criticism for picking players out of form during his time as coach of rep teams, but he would always get the best out of them. He'd get them up for the occasion.
Personally, I found him to be great when he coached NSW in 2005 and Australia from 2006-08.
Few can lift you for a game like Sticky can. He could be the perfect man for the job for NSW next year, if the circumstances are right.

ON another note, Darren Lockyer and Petero Civoniceva have questioned how the Dragons have signed me under the salary cap. I have enormous respect for both those guys, and it's good to see two of the most senior players in the game caring about where it's headed.
But they can only question so far.
If a player wants to go to a club for less, ultimately it is his decision.
As long as you abide by the salary cap rules, which are black and white, and Ian Schubert signs off on them, then that's fine.

Of course Lockyer and Petero have no right telling anyone else where they should play or how much they should play for. Gasnier is being overly polite in telling them to mind their own business.

I doubt Lockyer would take kindly to being told where to work and what his wages should be.

Thanks for posting Gaz's article Godz.

I didn't want to go to the telecrap's site but I did want to see what Gaz was going to say.

Could we possibly have a 'Gaz's Article' sticky that someone could cut and paste every Thursday? That would save us having to go to the crap paper's website.
