Spotted in Perth this week: WARL CEO and Reds bid leader John Sackson having lunch with Brisbane Bombers leader Craig Davison. Wonder what the topic of conversation was?

Merger ;-)

I do hope the Reds get in though, and soon. Plus it will give me a chance to crack out my WA Reds JBC jersey for when St George play shit (kinda like now).

Craig Davison once again latching himself to the W.A. Reds bid instead of shoring up his own Bombers bid. Which is actually pretty smart imo. This has been on going since the Bombers first launched as Brisbane 2. His 4 step plan is to

1) speak loudly on W.A. first
2) talk about the potential players Bombers will sign
3) speak about the future, never on what's happening in the present
4) downplay the importance of Ipswich, Central Coast & Central QLD

I think considering Gallop's feelings towards Davison, W.A. Reds would be better to just go at it alone or at the very least joint bid with Ipswich/Western Corridor

Go the Reds.

WA Reds SG Ball Developments.

New coach and refocus on more WA jnrs playing now the elite academy has been running 2 years and bringing through better qaulity jnr's.

The WA Rugby League and WA Reds are please to confirm the appointment of Daniel Green as the SG Ball Head Coach for season 2011 – 2012. Daniel has a long established background in Rugby League both here in Western Australia and on the eastern seaboard in NSW competitions. The WA Rugby League believe that Daniel will bring a professional approach to the WA Reds SG Ball program continuing the outstanding work of departing Head Coach Andrew Korn. Andrew will stay on with the WA Reds working alongside Angelo Tsakalos as assistant coaches. The WA Reds have also been able to retain the services of the Strength and conditioning team in Tony Merrick and Roger Steward. The support staff is completed with Chris Gray, Mick Meanie and Jim Toohey also staying on in their roles as trainers and managers.
Daniel Green said on his new position within the WA Reds “I am very honoured and couldn’t be happier with the coaching and support staff that are also on board for the 2012 season. This season is a big step for the WA Reds with our new recruitment policy so the identification and review of local talent will begin immediately.”
The WA Reds are excited at the prospects of the team for the forthcoming season, as this year the WA Reds staff will focus their recruitment on home grown talent from WA, the team will carry a squad of 40 players with no less than 35 of those players coming from Western Australia. The coaching staff agrees with the WA Rugby League that the future of the WA Reds at SG Ball level lies within Western Australia giving local players an opportunity to play Rugby League at an elite level.
The WA Reds academy will also be stepped up this coming season after the success of the inaugural 2010 – 2011 program. The squad is currently being put together, with officials out watching the juniors around Perth looking to identify talented players. The academy will be expected to train three (3) times a week this year, with a game in February played in NSW against the U16’s opposition. Ian Prout, a long time respected coach within WA, will take the reigns as the first WA Reds Academy Director of Coaching, he is charged with preparing the junior players for future SG Ball seasons.
WA Rugby League’s Operations and Development Manager Dale Christy said “We are very excited by these appointments both at SG Ball and Academy level we are hoping to provide a pathway for WA juniors to reach their Rugby League ambitions.”

Perth is realistic expansion option if Sydney NRL club will commit to relocation, David Gallop says

Perth would be a realistic expansion option if a Sydney club were willing to relocate, NRL chief executive David Gallop said.
Gallop reiterated his view on the short-term vitality of the game when he joined NRL on Fox on Wednesday night, insisting that 2015 appeared to be the most feasible timeframe to extend the league beyond 16 teams.
Former New Zealand halfback Gary Freeman continued his call for an NRL club to relocate to Western Australia, to which Gallop retorted: "If you can get someone to go, Wiz.

"We need a club that can go and be part of that community.
"We would incentivise that as long as it was the right move.
"If someone was to do that, we'd be open to the idea."But we're certainly not going to force it on anyone."

So where will expansion be? And how many teams?
Perth, Brisbane, Ipswich in Queensland, the NSW Central Coast, Central Queensland, Papua New Guinea and Wellington have expressed an interest in joining the NRL from 2013.

The NRL boss hinted the league would look to put one team in a rural heartland and another in a new market.
"Some strategic growth into new areas is important," he said.
"But I also think shoring up our heartland, in places where we know people are interested in rugby league, is important as well.
"If we added two teams, you could maybe do one of each."
Gallop's reluctance to leap into expansion relates to financial stability, pointing to the current struggles of many NRL clubs as a more pressing issue than funding new projects.

"We need to spend a few more years getting what we've got more financially robust," he said.
"I think we all realise the clubs need more money."

Former Kangaroos halfback Greg Alexander has witnessed the current struggles first hand during his time on the Penrith board.
He said that all NRL stakeholders would each be reaching out to shore up their own future once the new television rights deal had been negotiated.
"That will be a priority, to get the distribution of the funds correct," the Fox Sports commentator said.
"When we do get some increased revenue, every part of the game will be putting their hand out ... wanting a piece of that pie."
Gallop said the challenge, once the vitality of the current 16 clubs was secure, would be to ensure the new entrants had the backing to becoming major players in the league from the outset.

"I think that the competitive market that football codes are in in this country you can't afford to have a team to come in and not be competitive almost straight away," he said.

Much of the same stuff. I think at this point no club is willing to commit to a complete relocation. Better to just keep building the Reds bid imo.

No club will relocate, a relocation wouldn't work in WA anyway.

WA Reds for 2015.

If that is the only option, I am sure it could work. The NRL would have to put a sufficient carrot up for offer though.

The language he used regarding expansion and that someone would need to move for it to happen in that region was a bit surprising. I thought Perth was a sure thing, but now I am not so sure.

This just proves how uncommited he is to "expansion" he wants a presence but only if someone relocates.

f**k off; Perth deserve their own team with their own identity after being f**ked over in the SL war...

Sounds like he wants Perth and Central coast. With the hope that one of the struggling Sydney teams will do him a favour and volunteer to go.

Probably Manly, Roosters or the Sharks.

Relocation for Perth doesn't make sense in my opinion. To Central Coast I understand, though I also think the Bears have done enough to warrant a spot.

A new market has to be Perth. What else is there? Rural heartland though is an odd turn of phrase. I wouldn't call Ipswich or Central Coast 'rural'. Central Queensland? (i hope not, population too small).

TBF that is not what he has said, it is an "interpretation" of what he actually said, He did not say that a WA Reds is not a realistic option, when pushed on a team relocating he said it would be an option and they would offer incentives.

What pees me off is that he didn't acknowledge that ultimately it is the WARL's decision not the NRL's or some failing clubs. Without the WARL's backing and subsequently the WA RL communities backing it would be a disaster and we would end up with another Melbourne scenario.

Gallop is weak as pish and if he actully was more clued up what he would have said was "a relocation is an option that we would support IF the WARL and WA community backed it". Also there is no reason we couldn;t have expansion in 2014. I am yet to hear him give a reason why it needs to wait till 2015?

I think that's the reason Gallop is welcoming of a move for a Sydney team to Perth. That way they can theoretically introduce three new teams, Perth, one of the QLD bids and the Central Coast.

If there's only two teams the obvious front runners are Perth and Brisbane2, so this would be the best change the Bears have.

It would be nice for the WA fans to have their own identity though. And I'm a fan of that jersey.
