Having Andrew hill at the NRL can only boost our chances, hopefully!

FORMER Western Reds player Andrew Hill, one of the key figures in Perth's bid for an NRL licence, says the proposed new franchise does not need a high-profile recruit to guarantee the team's future.
Hill, the NRL's director of league integration and game development, was impressed by the show of support for rugby league in WA during a recent visit to Perth.
Hill, a major player in Greater Western Sydney's entry into the AFL, said support from the general public not the personnel involved would go a long way towards convincing powerbrokers that Perth should have a team in the NRL.
GWS recruited coaching icon Kevin Sheedy and rugby league convert Israel Folau in its push for the AFL's 18th licence, but Hill said such a tactic would not be required to get Perth's bid over the line.
"I know how passionate the people here are about their state, so I think there's already enough support from WA and they'll get behind any team that's truly representing their state on the national stage.
"Perth won't have to worry about attracting a big name just for the sake of getting that exposure because I think that exposure is already here."
Hill was a reserve-grade player with the Reds during their short stint in the NRL in the mid-1990s, as well as a coaching and developing manager with the now defunct club.
Hill also praised the WA Rugby League's level of corporate support and grassroots development programs.
"The way the schoolboy championships were conducted were as good as any we've seen at this level around the country," he said.

WA Reds sign new coach and focus on local jnr's
The WA Rugby League and WA Reds are please to confirm the appointment of Daniel Green as the SG Ball Head Coach for season 2011 – 2012. Daniel has a long established background in Rugby League both here in Western Australia and on the eastern seaboard in NSW competitions. The WA Rugby League believe that Daniel will bring a professional approach to the WA Reds SG Ball program continuing the outstanding work of departing Head Coach Andrew Korn. Andrew will stay on with the WA Reds working alongside Angelo Tsakalos as assistant coaches. The WA Reds are excited at the prospects of the team for the forthcoming season, as this year the WA Reds staff will focus their recruitment on home grown talent from WA, the team will carry a squad of 40 players with no less than 35 of those players coming from Western Australia. The coaching staff agrees with the WA Rugby League that the future of the WA Reds at SG Ball level lies within Western Australia giving local players an opportunity to play Rugby League at an elite level
The WA Reds academy will also be stepped up this coming season after the success of the inaugural 2010 – 2011 program. The squad is currently being put together, with officials out watching the juniors around Perth looking to identify talented players. The academy will be expected to train three (3) times a week this year, with a game in February played in NSW against the U16’s opposition

Should the Reds consider playing two premiership games in the Northern Territory? (plus a preseason game there)

I actually played my first RL in Katherine in the NT and the play potential in the NT is amazing.

The NT government has offered significant money to play in the NT but NRL clubs have been reluctant. The Reds would be a great fit for the NT as a secondary base. It would open another supporter base, more junior and sponsorship potential.

Like GWS has with the AFL the Reds could offer to play 2 premiership games in the NT and a preseason game there (say in the Alice or Katherine) if they can get five thousand members. (I think it could be achieved) Like GWS I would also create a special NT 'Reds' jersey. (increasing merchandising sales)

Though it would mean less games in Perth (say 10 or 11) you would be increasing the 'event' element of the Reds and you could give games like Cowboys to the NT.

The NT has also been looking at fielding a team in the QLD Cup and this would give a perfect avenue for players.

The Cowboys do bits and peices up there don't they? Could always use more though.

Yeah we usually play a preseason game in NT, played the Broncos in Alice Springs this year. Our management has been very reluctant to do a premiership match there though due to lack of infrastructure

No I don't think the Reds should, I think we are going to have enough on our plate in WA without worrying about another new frontier as well.

Taking games on the road seems to be a very difficult thing to do, I know we are trying to get a second game in Perth next season and despite Sth's making well over $1/2 million from there trip this year no one is biteing our hand off.

It's not all about the cash. I am a season ticket holder for my club and personally would like to see the full complement of home games played in Townsville so I can attend them all. Taking games into neutral territory puts the "home" club at a disadvantage in terms of the overall competition.

WA Reds & NQ Cowboys should play an NRL home game in NT every year. There are ex-pats from both states there plus the locals.

I know Traeger Park is actually getting lighting to broadcast AFL games there and is called up as a 10,000 capacity. Mararra in Darwin is now 15,000.

They could alternate between the two cities each year. It should also be a Saturday night game so travelling fans can attend and run in conjunction with local football carnivals.

Great idea. The NT seems to have been claimed by AFL and the NRL need to change that situation.

By 2015 there should be a Darwin team and Port Moresby team playing in the QLD Cup. Toowoomba Clydesdales need to come back as well.

The Cowboys should be playing a game in Cairns before they play a game in Darwin..

I only suggest Reds vs Cowboys in Darwin give the expat populations being divided. Could even be Titans.

Re Cairns, feebleball seem to get $20 million+ stadium upgrades for playing only 1 or 2 games in these places a year.

2 Sydney teams should play a home game in Qld each year against the Cowboys. It will make more money than in Sydney and have the same effect as a Cowboys homegame.

It would make sense for a Sydney team (eg Parramatta or Roosters) to move their home game v Cowboys to Cairns...

However, I think not enough is done by the Cowboys to try and draw in Cairns support... to my way of thinking, the team is called Nth QLD and not Townsville for a reason...

Exactly, the whole point about having a WA team is to have games in WA. lets not take games away from there.

Playing games in those type of areas should be up to the NSW teams.

We play trials in Cairns, if we take regular season games to cairns the club is then isolating the people of mackay, ayr, bowen because you have just added another 4 hours onto their trip, Tvl works because it is central for everybody. Cairns has no suitable ground either, the lighting at Barlow park is substandars as is the corporate facilities (there are pretty much none). The club will lose shit tins of money if it moves games to Cairns and unfortunatley it doesnt have a lot spare at the moment.
