Having Andrew hill at the NRL can only boost our chances, hopefully!
FORMER Western Reds player Andrew Hill, one of the key figures in Perth's bid for an NRL licence, says the proposed new franchise does not need a high-profile recruit to guarantee the team's future.
Hill, the NRL's director of league integration and game development, was impressed by the show of support for rugby league in WA during a recent visit to Perth.
Hill, a major player in Greater Western Sydney's entry into the AFL, said support from the general public not the personnel involved would go a long way towards convincing powerbrokers that Perth should have a team in the NRL.
GWS recruited coaching icon Kevin Sheedy and rugby league convert Israel Folau in its push for the AFL's 18th licence, but Hill said such a tactic would not be required to get Perth's bid over the line.
"I know how passionate the people here are about their state, so I think there's already enough support from WA and they'll get behind any team that's truly representing their state on the national stage.
"Perth won't have to worry about attracting a big name just for the sake of getting that exposure because I think that exposure is already here."
Hill was a reserve-grade player with the Reds during their short stint in the NRL in the mid-1990s, as well as a coaching and developing manager with the now defunct club.
Hill also praised the WA Rugby League's level of corporate support and grassroots development programs.
"The way the schoolboy championships were conducted were as good as any we've seen at this level around the country," he said.
