We play trials in Cairns, if we take regular season games to cairns the club is then isolating the people of mackay, ayr, bowen because you have just added another 4 hours onto their trip, Tvl works because it is central for everybody.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population

Townsville poulation - 172,316
Cairns population - 150,920
Mackay population - 85,700
Ayr population - 8,093
Bowen population - 14,613

Cairns is a major population centre nearly the same size as TVL, the other places you have mentioned are not...

Cairns has no suitable ground either, the lighting at Barlow park is substandars as is the corporate facilities (there are pretty much none).

Barlow park - 18,000 capacity apparently...

Cowboys dont get that every game so why not move a poor drawcard there?

Perhaps the local government might sweeten the deal as well?

If Cowboys don't want to play a home game in Cairns, then Sydney clubs should play Cowboys there.

There is money to be made.

I mainly suggest NQ for Darwin simply because it can make much need $$$ for the club.

I mean 15,000/10,000 in Darwin/Alice Springs > what that game would generate $-wise at home.

Considering they have to play and we want to get serious about spreading the game, it seems well suited for an annual Territorian Carnival.

As mentioned above, I agree that a Sydney team could move one of their games against the Cowboys to Cairns..

Not sure why Darwin is more attractive to the Cowboys then Cairns though?

Smaller population & Smaller ground....

You can fit 16,000 at Darwin from what I've seen.

I just thing WA vs NQ is a good easy sell in NT.

With investment from the NT government, it could become a good money spinner for both clubs and expand their appeal.

Agreed though that Cairns needs to be included somehow.

I think in regards to Cairns (or other cities) that if a team - NQ or otherwise committed to playing a number of games there (or the NRL committed to playing games there with different clubs home games moved) that they can then lobby for improvements in stadia.

We can't expect governments to invest money in such facilities unless the NRL is committed to playing there.

Barlow park in Cairns doesnt have a capacity of 18k, I was there for a trial when they announced the crowd figure of 18k and there was no way in the world there was 18k there, I have been to enough urban grounds in sydney in my time and DFS and I know roughly what 18k looks like, check out the pics on austadiums and tell me you could put 18k in there, the hill and main grandstand are half maybe even less than that, in size to Leichardt ffs. Whoever came up with that figure was bullshittimg deluxe. Try selling corporate boxes and season tickets to people when there's 1-2 less games a year at DFS??? We've played regular season games up there and the first one had about 12-13k from memory and the second one flopped with about 8k. But people don't remember this. The cowboys represent a huge area, the reason why we've had good crowds over the years is because Tvl is central for everyone and we play on Saturday nights. It's all well and good to say 'they should play a game in Cairns' but until they get a facility with half decent corporate facilities, then it's never going to happen for regular season games.

Any news if they will officially use Nuke's logo???

We will be putting out a Red Army survey shortly for fans to have their say on logo concepts and we will feed this back to the bid team. They were very impressed with our colours survey which attracted over 240 respondents and clearly showed a majority wanted gold, red and black as our colours.

not in terms of what the bid teams decision will be re colours but the results of the survey will be in this month's Red Army newsletter and as I say the fans have spoken loud and clear about what they would prefer!

In other good news I have heard there is very strong State govt backing for an NRL team in Perth and once the bids are officially called for they will be significantly supporting the WA Reds bid team both financially and with Govt dept expertise to make sure the bid document is as thorough and well put together as possible. They see that to justify spending the sort of tax payers $'s they are on nib they need another high profile tennant and want to make sure the city has an NRL team.

No it can't happen until there is an official call for bids. Then the Govt support will kick in. If they gave us it now and then the NRL decided not to expand there would be serious questions asked by the opposition about wasting tax payers money! All the work up till now has been funded by the WARL with the support of some great sponsors and backers.

Spotted in Perth this week: WARL CEO and Reds bid leader John Sackson having lunch with Brisbane Bombers leader Craig Davison. Wonder what the topic of conversation was?
