In the best competition in recent history for Western Australian Rugby League, seven clubs will be represented in the Harvey Norman Premiership Grand Final series on Saturday at nib Stadium in Perth.
The development of the code is working well and with around 2500 registered players in the system – the most of any state outside of New South Wales and Queensland, League bosses are excited that the grass roots development is matching their quest for long term NRL expansion options.
In a replay of the 2010 First Grade Grand Final North Beach Sea Eagles will meet South Perth Lions. During the home and away season both clubs had a win each, but it was North Beach who strangled the Lions fire power two weeks ago to get to the Grand Final first.
North Beach will be sweating on getting some of their top players back onto the field, but it will be the tactics of both teams that will be the telling factor.
In the Reserves final, South West Warriors in just their second season in the competition will travel from Bunbury keen to show the WARL that they are ready to stake a claim for first grade status.
They will take on Rockingham Sharks in what will be a classic encounter and a game well worth getting to the ground early to see.
Joondalup Giants will take on Willagee Bears in the Under 18 Grand Final. This competition will have some of the future game’s talent on show.
In the lead off game, the women will feature in the LeagueTag final with Fremantle Roosters playing Joondalup Giants

Game Details:
Saturday, 3 September
nib Stadium, Pier Street, Perth
1.30: LeagueTag Fremantle Roosters v Joondalup Giants
2.45: Under 18 Joondalup Giants v Willagee Bears
4.15: Reserves South West Warriors v Rockingham Sharks
6.00: First Grade North Beach Sea Eagles v South Perth Lions

Admission $15
WA Reds members $10
Children Under 16 free

Not sure, on paper yes but Beach have beaten them in the playoffs so will be a close game. Weather isn't looking great which could play into Sth's forwards strengths.
My tips:
Nth Beach
SW Warriors
Giants
Roosters

Good to see Willagees kids doing well, as a club that gets hammered every year there may be some hope for the future!

Trent Barrett backs Perth for expansion

Trent was in town last week in his role as NRL ambassador and spent the week in Perth and Kalgoorlie running coaching clincs for kids and fronting the media. He attended the WARL Gf day at nib and caught up with some of teh Red Army members at the ground. He is fully backing Perth for a team and believes the time is ripe for expansion West.

Here his radio interview here:

From Melbourne to Perth, there is a lot of excitement in WA with talk of the NRL looking at expansion in 2015. The NRL has spent some time promoting the game in Perth in recent years. I have been there twice this year in my role as a One Community Ambassador and after my last trip I am even more impressed by what they have to offer.

Perth is a great city, warm weather, nice beaches, no traffic, friendly people and a community that loves its sport. The WARL are well placed financially. The mining industry is enormous in WA and Government is also a huge backer of the move to get a NRL team. The time difference will suit live television in the Eastern states giving networks the luxury of consecutive live games on Friday nights or Sunday afternoons.

Attracting marquee players and coaches to Perth wouldn’t be a problem. They have the resources, facilities and vision to make it an exciting proposition for any player. John Sackson and his Board of Directors are being very proactive in preparation for the opportunity and hope that they will be included in our expanded competition. I attended the WARL grand final which South Perth won and the locals are more than excited about having their own team. With the mining industry going so well a lot families are moving west and bringing with them Rugby League backgrounds which will only strengthen the local competition.

Other codes have been travelling from Perth for years and the time spent in the air isn’t a problem for them if it’s handled professionally. Travelling teams can often form stronger relationships within a club due to the extra time they are spending together on the road. Perth would be a great option for the NRL and, if we are serious about truly having a national competition, then it’s a no-brainer ... it just has to be done properly.

For anyone into RL memorabilia the WARL has got a load of 1997 Perth Reds SL Jerseys they are flogging off for $30 each. Bargain, I have seen them go for $250+ on Ebay! Also some nice WA Reds Jnr and Snr RL balls for $10 each.

Tyron Cranston Wins Ken Allen Award
by Bree
September 12th, 2011
North Beach Fullback Tyron Cranston was a runaway winner in WA Rugby League’s highest individual award, the Ken Allen Medal announced on Friday night.

After polling in the first eight rounds of the home and away season, Cranston finished with 26 votes, seven clear of runner up Josh Benjamin from Kalamunda Bulldogs.

In third place was Rockingham Sharks’ Caleb Reedy with 16 votes.

The fullback has enjoyed a good year with the Sea Eagles and was a big factor in the showing of the side all year. He had an uncanny skill of being able to turn games around through his ability to break lines and create scoring opportunities against the flow of play.

The humble winner after the count was proud of his win.

“It has been a tough season for us but at the same time one of the best since coming to Western Australia four years ago. I was lucky to have a good team around me which made my job easier”.

The medal win going to North Beach was in some part a consolation for going down in the Grand Final a week before.

Other awards presented last night included Highest Try Scorer, Daniel Sneddon of Joondalup Giants with 26. Scott Jones of South Perth Lions took out the award for Highest Goal Scorer (65) and Highest Points Scorer with 146.

The awards capped off an exciting year for Rugby League in WA, both on and off the field. The competition was one of the best seen in the past decade with little separating the top sides and the emergence of the South West Warriors providing a fertile growth area for the league in Bunbury.

The ground work being done at operational level was also an important part in getting the game in top shape in the state at all levels, while planning for the potential of an NRL side in 2014.

Yeah, definitely 3rd one is best. 1 and 4 are too cartoonish. 2 is very bland and it looks like the kangaroo is just standing there waiting to get shot or run down.

we are just putting them up as examples of types of logo rather than suggesting that it would be the logo we would want. Hopefully to get a feel of which style of logo people would prefer.

Putting up examples is the wrong way to do that though, as there will be bias towards the best looking example, but not necissarily the style most prefered.

Should be a series questions only - eg

What shape would you like the logo? Round, Oval, Shield, Triangle
What colours?
What features would you like? Ball, Kangaroo, Sun et cetera

Well the survey did have a section for comments on each logo, so you can provide further details of what you like and don't like.

which is fine, I just think if you put up examples that are only half developed ideas it will skew the results.

Should I have done it if I'm not a fan? Sorry, just went in there to help. Said shield awesome (not the roo on it though) but the non-cartoon best.

I do like a badge that has a classic look to it. They tend to stand the test of time better as well, whereas contemporary ones fade and need replacing.
