A dual-code rugby star as a schoolboy, Taylor kept to the script by admitting anything was possible once his current two-year deal with the Warriors expired.

No point throwing away those bargaining chips, after all.

But don't expect Taylor to start chasing kicks for a living any time soon.

A potential captain of both the Kiwis and Warriors, Taylor's bankability is in league and that is where he'll stay.

The Warriors have been in negotiations with one of this year's breakout stars over a long-term upgrade and extension for several months.

A deal has been delayed by Taylor changing management but the parties are believed to be close and Taylor's future should be confirmed shortly after he returns from the Kiwis tour.

Less likely to be staying beyond 2012 is James Maloney.

The recruitment of Thomas Leuluai for 2013 is a clear signal the Warriors don't expect to retain Maloney long-term.

The club has been attempting to re-sign Maloney since May..

However a Roosters club that has shed Todd Carney and will be contemplating the looming retirement of Braith Anasta may also be a serious player.
Did I miss something here?

It's a speculative postulation, despite what that article implies.

Warriors Line Up Leuluai

The Warriors are hoping to lure Kiwis hooker Thomas Leuluai back to Mt Smart in 2013, a decade after he made his debut for the club as a 17-year-old.

Leuluai started his career with the Warriors in 2003, becoming the youngest player to appear for the club, but having limited game time behind Stacey Jones and Lance Hohaia.

That prompted him to sign for the London Broncos in the UK Super League in 2005 and he spent two seasons there before moving to Wigan.

He helped them to the 2010 Super League title, their first since 1998, with a man-of-the-match performance in their grand final win over St Helens and is now regarded as one of the league's best players.

Wigan are desperate to hang onto the 26-year-old playmaker, who usually plays hooker for the Kiwis but in the halves for his club.

A number of NRL clubs are also said to be interested in securing his services, including the Warriors.

Leuluai could be seen as a replacement for livewire five-eighth James Maloney who is expected to leave Mt Smart Stadium at the end of next season.

But the Warriors are working hard to retain Maloney as well as sign Leuluai. They also have promising halfback Shaun Johnson, who burst onto the scene in the second half of the NRL season, signed until the end of 2013 and hooker Nathan Friend will join from the Titans next season.

Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah declined to comment on Leuluai but said they were doing everything they could to re-sign Maloney.

The 25-year-old played a significant hand in helping the Warriors to this year's grand final but it is expected he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of 2012. He wants to return to play in Australia, with South Sydney a possible destination.

"It's still our desire to retain James,'' Scurrah said. "We have been in discussions with him since May and are still in discussions. His agent has been upfront that he's a player of interest to a number of clubs.

"We are aware of that. We have made it clear we want to keep him and he's committed to the club for next season. We are doing our best to retain him beyond that.''

Scurrah said they would soon make a number of announcements about players they had re-signed as they shape their first-grade and under-20 squads for the next couple of seasons.

Pre-season training under new coach Brian McClennan starts on November 21.

Speculation surfaced as early as June that Leuluai was hoping to leave Wigan at the end of 2011 and follow his coach, Michael Maguire, to the Rabbitohs. But Leuluai said he would see out his contract.

Speculation remains he will head to Souths in 2013 but APNZ understands Leuluai has advised the Rabbitohs he will join the Warriors instead.

When asked if he was being lined up to replace Maloney at the Warriors, he told APNZ: `I don't know _ you'll have to ask James Maloney about that, bro,'' Leuluai said.

"I've got one more year at Wigan. I've really enjoyed my time at Wigan. When the time comes, I'll make the decision.''

Leuluai is a regular in the Kiwis and the only UK-based player in the present side contesting the Four Nations. He made his international debut in 2003, when he became the second-youngest player to play for New Zealand, and has since amassed 25 test caps.

I was so happy to read this in the paper this morning -- just nice to see/read/hear Warriors news... But yeah, the certainty of the writing is odd. Not bad to chase him, IMO -- but still hope we can retain Maloney as well, despite the long looking odds as reported today.

Definitely could do worse. Like seeing if Grant Fox would make the transition and play NRL along with John Gallagher (At their current ages). Yuck. No thanks. He's somewhat effective for the Kiwis at hooker because he's asked just to do the basics. That won't suffice in the NRL. I've never rated him TBH.

Better to splash the cash on Maloney knowing in Johnson and Maloney you have a combination which has already shown incredible potential.

How much is Maloney worth? He is going to be chased hard by Sydney clubs, and he wants to return to Sydney -- at this stage I'm thinking we would have to double what they offer him, just to make him think it over. I hope I'm wrong... But it just 'reads,' as if he decided already, and has for quite sometime now.

Depends if we are willing to pay $550,000 plus for him. I'd say the Rabbits or some other Sydney team will offer him somewhere close to 400,000 as long as he doesn't have a terrible start to the season. I'd say he is good as gone. No offense to TL but I'd rather chuck all that big money at Foran. As unlikely as it might be that he would decide to come to us over staying at Manly or going to the Dogs.

Maloney is on peanuts. You could triple his salary and still wouldnt be in the top 10 highest paid players in the league. Who wrote the article that Leaguenut put up. Was it one of Jessups beauts.

Anyways the thing in our favour is the TV deal comes into effect in 2013 and that gives us more cash to play with. He is worth throwing a huge amount at providing its a 3 year deal where we will have 1 of the best spines in the NRL
1 Locke
6 Maloney
7 Johnson
9 Friend

Scurrah needs to make it happen

Maloney is integral to our future aspirations. Sign him, whatever the cost.

The article is anonymous but Peter Jessup hasn't worked at the New Zealand Herald for a couple of years now.

I'd be pretty stoaked with:
1. Locke
6. Maloney
7. Johnson
9. Leuluai

Friend has 2 years though right? So I don't know where TL would fit in.

Yeah, Friend signed for 2 with a 1 year option. Either way, if we're trying to sign up Leuluai, either Friend is up for 2 years, or Maloney is a good bet back to Syd...

Yeah, agree there. I like Thomas, certainly a good guy/team player...but he has seemed pretty average in the halves, hooker he's okay, but if the mindset is a Maloney replacement that's a head scratcher. Even at hooker I dunno if we really need him:? But...it's all speculation at this stage

But...if Maloney goes, he goes. It's a team sport. I'm not into this all our hopes on one player stuff. It'd be a blow, and I'd much prefer he stay...but life goes on and so does the team.
