Why does there need to be a curtain raiser? Do any other sports have one?

    2024 Crowd Watch

Not sure what your point is about Origin? I haven’t been to SOO @ MCG in years. Like most I think the MCG is ordinary for RL, but so too is ACCOR. SOO was much better at Marvel years back, but the extra revenue cannot be ignored, and Victorians are used to sitting a long way back from the...

    2024 Crowd Watch

Yep. Problem having it as a curtain raiser is that there weee very few Sharks or Roosters fans, so very little atmosphere. It wasn’t a high standard game but a great comeback and close finish. Even 15k fans of the competing teams at Parra or SFS would have been better.

PVL hates Victoria too much to give us the GF, even if we pay $$$. He is a Sydney/NSW man first, and a RL man second.

2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

No necessarily. The NRL is by far the biggest league of any sport in the world. They have a 17 game season, five weeks of finals, then nothing for 30 weeks. Scarcity is also a good way to create demand.

Geez it’s a long day. I’ve been to a couple and reckon next time I will turn up just before the entertainment kicks off.

Illawarra applied to join the comp in 1967 and would have been granted entry but were blocked by the rest of the NSW Country RL. Cronulla was the second choice for the extra spot after Penrith.

Madness. $1500 is about what you pay an illegal scalper for a ticket. So, to cut that out, the AFL sells a few thousand ‘special packages’ to the general public with food and drinks for around the same price. It is legalised scalping.

    2024 Crowd Watch

$1000, no, $400, yes. There are no public tickets available to the other GF, so Melbournians would definitely snap up every available NRL GF ticket. It would be bigger than SOO here, and generate double the revenue of an ACCOR GF, plus whatever the Vic govt will pay to bring it here. Maybe an...

Still eight bays where you can buy eight tickets - across four price categories.

    2024 Crowd Watch

Agree. NRL needs to think long term here. The only way to increase prices long term is to create FOMO. And the only way to create FOMO is to ensure the GF sells out every year, on the Monday after PF weekend. Take a step back, price the game at a level where it sells out quickly, then...

The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Wasn‘t there a plan to move cricket there so Eden Park could be made rectangular?

In 2017 they had family tickets going for about $100 at the start of GF week. I put the kids in the car and headed up last minute. They would want to move quickly on this, running out of time.

There is not the demand for an NRL GF ballot, which only works if you have FOMO. The reality is that it is only the fourth biggest RL game of the year. One way to increase crowds is to use a variable pricing model. For low demand games, make GA tickets really cheap. Cheap enough to ensure that...

Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

68k was a very good crowd. Was that expected? Maybe there is life in Union yet?

The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

MCG is owned by the state government. It is run by the MCC which has 104k members most of whom pay $875 p/a. Plus another 190k on the waiting list. There is a fair bit of revenue right there before you play any games. Sports and concert crowds top 4m annually - think of the catering rights for...

The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Absolutely. It’s probably because politicians don‘t have a big media conference and photo op everything they decide to build a bridge. Media attention generates stronger support, but also stronger opposition to projects. Victoria is spending $60B on a rail loop that few will use compared to our...

    Peter V'landys - New NRL/ARLC Chairman

There are 204 games currently. And new teams in Perth, PNG and NZ will be the three most expensive teams in the comp.

Would pass on Marvel unless they bring the stands in. Money talks - a 40k crowd would generate $2m - $3m in ticketing, over $1m in catering and make that worthwhile for all parties.
