It's been a couple of weeks since being able to enjoy a Souffs match thread after a game, but this is delightful.

Did it ever occur to you idiots that teams aren't equal? If penalties are supposed to end up the same, why have them at all? Also, there's not a peep when we lose a penalty count.

Keep hating, losers.

Just a note about the penalties. The score was 10-6 in Manly's favour at half time. In the second half, where the game was won, the penalties were 4-3 in Souths favour. Souths outscored Manly 16-0 with only one extra penalty. I think it's a bit far fetched to say Manly getting hammered in the penalties cost them the game. The second half was fairly even and Manly were held to nil

Just got home from the game. Will enjoy reading all the butt hurt in this thread. Manly are a bunch of grubby dogs and deserved to be penalised more than they were. In the end, the good guys won.

This shows how much hate there is for $ouff$ and Ingli$, and more importantly how bad the refereeing was.
So many people supporting Manly, its unheard of
Only from genius LU posters(Danish,Dutchy,Ceagle,Swarzey and some Canbraaa merkin)...look at any non biased forum/report and you will find that it was a good tight game and any penalties given were deserved.

Calming down a bit, there were some brilliant moments from Souffs. Reynolds was incredible in getting the repeat sets and it did mount a lot of pressure on Manly in defence. Attack speed especially in the last 20 of the first half was a treat to watch. I still do believe there were a number of penalties that were far from it.

Read it from start to finish if you're after a good chuckle. Nothing can compare with the absolute gold in the 2010 GF Game Day thread though. That was incredibly entertaining

Obviously the Matai no try was a controversial call in the match but was I the only one who saw Greg inglis shoulder charge matai's head in the process of stopping that try?

with comments like this its obvious that people dont know that the timing of penalties is just as important

two of those penalties were given within 1 minute of each other
whereas souths would get most of them getting out of their own end

and the more penalties you rack up at the start of the game
the less you need in the back end because a lot of the time the other team is too tired to make the best use of those opportunities
while your team is still fresh from not tackling as much.
if you want to fix a game you just need to give 4-5 penalties to one team early in the first half
while its not a guaranteed thing it definitely will go a long way
those square up penalties that come late in the half, in quick succession just make the count look good, but are not nearly as effective as ones i notice that souths seem to get all the time

Voltron, In round 11 Souths lost the penalty count 11-3. They lost the game by two points. Maguire never used it as an excuse and neither did the team. It's poor to make excuses, Souths have lost more penalty counts than won this year but they still kept winning. The score was 16-0 in the second half. Manly had their chances and were continually held up or pushed out by some great defense. You can't take that away from them.

that is not my point
just pointing out that in the second half that it was a 4:3 penalty count is meaningless
the numbers are meaningless unless you see how they come in the context of the game.

and the fact that they are held out can be incorporated into what i said
which is because of the flurry of penalties early in the game against one team
means that the penalised team is much less effective when it gets down to the other end because theyre too tired from all the tackling.

just saying that the make up of penalties in a game goes a long way to determining it
some coaches will fess up that their team was ill disciplined
but when penalties are blown for innocuous things and only against one team
then one expects the coach to say something, because to not say anything is even worse

meh im not a manly supporter but i just wanted to point out that an even penalty count at the end of the game doesnt necessarily mean anything
and it annoys me when people just look at the overall count and think it was fair because of it

That would be fair if it's only the penalty count I was looking at but Souths outplayed Manly in all the other stats too. Less errors, More repeat sets off kicks, Less missed tackles, Higher completion rate, More metres, More line breaks, More tackle busts.. These things cannot be attributed to a penalty count. I watch the way Manly rushed up in defense and I thought, they're gonna get tired doing that and they did. Souths sit back rather than rush up and they end up with more energy at the back end of the game.
