And the Raiders are one of those teams?
When compared to a team like the Storm, I would say so, yes. Imagine it was Billy Slater getting tackled in mid-air like Wighton was. Or being tackled around the neck in the in-goal like Croker was. Or being shoulder charged like Ferguson was.

All three of those incidents would have resulted in penalties that would have put us further downfield instead of turnovers in our half like two of them ended up being.

We probably would have ended up dropping the ball anyway, but they were bad decisions that cost us possession and field position through no fault of our own.

I haven't seen the replay at close quarters, but I didn't think Buderus shoulder charged Ferguson. He didn't lean forward into the tackle, but rather braced himself for impact - which you're entitled to do. Looked more like a front on "body check" than a shoulder charge IMO.

Well, I'm glad all these teams that come to Newcastle play like shit. Hopefully it continues for the rest of the year.

I thought we played like shit but still could have won it as the Knights weren't much better than us. We had two disallowed tries and one dropped ball over the line and the result could have been entirely different.

There were some highly suspect refereeing decisions but at the end of the day it was the dropped ball and the lack of urgency at times that cost us the game.

Uate's mid air tackle on Wighton wasn't malicious but it still should have been a penalty regardless. But the lack of consistency in refereeing isn't something that is going to change any time soon. Refereeing f**kups are just part of the game, though some teams seem to get a lot more of them than others.

Agreed. We let that one slip away with silly unforced errors. Referees were awful but they always are and we need to realise we need to be better than most because we hardly ever get help from the men in pink. The raiders need to become mentally stronger and over come the frequent referee errors instead of dropping the heads and rolling over meekly.

We've got the games worst hooker and close to the worst 5/8th. Campese can hopefully fix one of those issues. But hooker... No idea how we fox that unless McIlwrick steps up... And Furner gives him the chance to do step up

Said the same thing a few pages back but dont expect anyone to listen to you they'll keep going on about how it was a shoulder charge.

Exactly. I don't see how it could possibly be classed as a shoulder charge when there was no "charging" at all. If anything Ferguson charged at him and Buderus just braced himself. I guess Raiders fans will grasp onto anything though to try and justify the loss. If I were them I'd be more worried about Ferguson's toughness staying down like that after bouncing off a player of Bedsy's size.

I agree that the Uate call was rough on the Raiders, but really, if some of the fans are going to try and pin the loss on that then good for them. I hope they're enjoying living in complete delusion.

Seriously, the Raiders weren't even that bad. IMO it was their best performance of the season (even counting their win against the Dragons). They actually looked pretty dangerous at times. Newcastle just had a bit too much class for them in the end (even though they were below their best).

Tom Learoyd Lahrs was not only penalised for a similar tackle but was put on report. I mean I agree with what you are saying in principle we can't expect Buderus to just warp into another location or just stand there and take Ferguson just running into him. The dude should be entitled to protect himself (and I f**king hate the banning of the shoulder charge)

BUT

Based on the way they have policed the law this year I have seen similar tackles called as shoulder charges. If it was say Mason it would have been a penalty. That is the issue I have with it.

Buderus has moved in on Ferguson and initiated contact using his shoulder with no effort whatsoever to use his arms in a normal tackling style.

I don't agree with the new shoulder charge rule myself, but I am sure that similar attempts to tackle players will be penalised in future games.

No we were terrible.

This is almost identical to the side that made the finals last year. Not one prop made over 100m (TLL the nearest at like 89m but I don't think he got a lot of time) and the side went to pieces as soon as they faced any difficulty. At the end of the day on the scale of how bad the Raiders have been this year you are right its at the top of the list but it was another pea hearted effort from the lads when I know they are capable of more than that.

Also Ferguson is the sides last worry. He is seriously turning into a bit of a beast at the moment. The only thing that could possibly stop him from kicking on to the next level now is his own attitude. He has all the physical tools, he has X factor and he is getting smarter on the field. He will start pressing for a NSW place if he keeps it up over the long term and shows he has grown a brain off the field.

Suttor and Sutton have both been stood down this coming weekend for their terrible performances refereeing this game, and rightly so.

Blake Ferguson has a possible fractured eye socket from Buderus' shoulder charge.

The same shoulder charge where Buderus made no contact with the head? That one?

Looks like Ferguson is made of glass ...

No, the one where Buderus shoulder charged Ferguson and the resulting head clash from Buderus' illegal tackling style caused Ferguson's possible fractured eye socket.

Not sure about the other one you are talking about.

Both referees have been dropped over it and the Jack Wighton mid air tackle. The referee's boss seems to think it should have been penalised.

Refs sidelined after hits to Raiders go unpenalised

April 2, 2013 - 1:06PM

Jon Tuxworth

Referees Gerard Sutton and Paul Suttor will be stood down from this week's NRL fixtures after two illegal incidents that injured two Canberra Raiders players went unpenalised at Newcastle on Sunday night.

The Raiders fear centre Blake Ferguson may have fractured his eye socket after copping a shoulder charge from Knights hooker Danny Buderus in the 28-12 loss, which prompted no action from officials.

Ferguson underwent scans yesterday and results are not yet known, but Canberra are worried he could be sidelined for up to three weeks.

Winger Jack Wighton has also had scans on a wrist he injured when illegally tackled in the air by opposite number Akuila Uate in the second half. Suttor and Sutton failed to award the Raiders a penalty, and Newcastle scored off the next set.

Referees boss Daniel Anderson attended the match, and was disappointed the Knights escaped a penalty for both incidents.

Anderson informed Furner today Suttor and Sutton would be stood down from this week's fixtures. It is unknown at this stage if they will be eligible to officiate NRL games next week.

Furner was fuming after the match, describing the Wighton and Ferguson incidents as ''mandatory penalties.''

Privately, the Raiders are concerned Buderus' lofty reputation in Newcastle contributed to him escaping any punishment.

"I'm just wondering what would have happened if it was the other way around [if Ferguson had hit Buderus],'' Furner said this afternoon.

The potential loss of Ferguson is the last thing the Raiders need after suffering a spate of injuries against the Knights.

Winger Sandor Earl (hamstring) and hooker Glen Buttriss (shoulder) also remain in some doubt for Sunday night's crucial home clash against the in-form Roosters.

Fergo ya soft merkin

Tries to run as hard as he can at one of the smallest blokes on the field, Bedsy stands his ground and down goes Fergo. No wonder Mase was calling Blakey a dog haha

LOL at the referees in this game. Watch the very next play after Ferguson gets shoulder charged. Suttor is telling Neville Costigan to move closer into the second marker position.

"Bit closer Neville... NEVILLE!"

Costigan doesn't move an inch and is then involved in the tackle right after the play the ball.

No penalty even though he was warned twice he wasn't standing at second marker.

f**kin' hopeless.
