Other option after super league was kicking manly out and norths and central coast each having their own stand alone teams

never would’ve happened bc of Arko but north’s has a train station, easy to get too for away fans and north shore way bigger and richer than manly

even if the northern beaches never came over to the bears it’s like Cronulla a small geographically isolated peninsula which has minimal value for rugby league
You don’t want the Northern Beaches or North Shore not being covered by a first grade team. The wealth on offer in both areas is something that needs to be tapped into.

It could have all been handled a lot better with some planning and foresight from the game’s governing bodies. What was the plan when the joint venture was allowed to dissolve? We now know after two decades of observation that there was no plan in place. It’s been 20+ years of dithering, contemplating this or that idea, sitting on their hands and only now saying let’s maybe let them back in over in Perth.

True but it is very costly, there are reasons why clubs like Cronulla (Newtown Jets) and Manly (Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles) don’t have their own NSW Cup teams.
Not to mention also flying that team across from WA, but okay.
The Roosters only just started their own NSW Cup team in 2023, both South Sydney (Bears) and Parramatta (Wentworthville) decided to go it alone a few years earlier.
Yes it's costly, luckily the NRL is now flush with cash, and it can be done.

And it's clear that the clubs, by your own example, are keener to go alone then to be handcuffed to an existing 2nd tier team.

No I said norths should’ve got their own team AND central coast

And yes there was no plan it was just a fluke which clubs survived and which didn’t

Perth bears is a great solution to the problem. Two birds one stone

Storm still don't have one, They do have pathway squads atleast. A huge task to match the other teams from day 1.

If only there was a club with existing pathways ready to help...

Storm going to benefit a lot from the death of the rebels

all that development work paid for by union goes to them now

The Cowboys and Titans want their own too, Reasons they gave was to have the NRL structures filter down. So players can just come in and know it.

They have no control over how their feeder teams play, Neither would any of these new teams coming under that model

There's no bears in Perth is there? Not even a koala. Drop bears are a plenty so maybe they should be called the Western Reds Drop Bears.

It’s great for the Bears and their old Sydney fans in the present, once they’re gone you’re left with the North Shore feeding into Perth without the people/fans there in Sydney that made the arrangement have the appearance of making some kind of sense in the past.

It’s an arrangement that will make little sense to kids from future generations on the North Shore that don’t have ties to the Bears and will leave the area a poor cousin of the areas covered by full-time Sydney teams.

It’s great for Perth to have juniors and a leagues club

it’s great for the nrl to have the bears brand back for tv ratings in Sydney (and Brisbane) and ratings too

I`ve heard this stated a few times, I suppose the up-side maybe that due to the initial excitement and extra investment in the North Sydney region we may see a resurgence in junior playing numbers, now yeah sure as Western Australia starts to gain independence through developing their own pathways in WA and North Sydney teams may seem a little irrelevant but a) the extra playing numbers will be a boon to the game overall, and b) I`m sure other clubs will only be too happy to take advantage of any resurgent North Sydney junior League. So win-win really.

When the Northern Eagles joint venture folded and the license went to Manly (kudos to Arko and Fulton) the NRL should have stepped in as they did when the Gold Coast Titans and other NRL clubs nearly folded.
A massive mistake by the NRL and utter selfishness by Manly.
Central Coast fans knew the merger was a takeover, they started not turning up to games because they knew Manlys intention was to move back down to Brokevale all along.
Perth people now think if a Perth Bears team struggles, the Bears will do a Manly on Perth and try to move over to Gosford or whatever.
Sorry the Bears are not like Manly.
I’m sure that the NRL will now have contract clauses in place protecting both sides of the merger, Arko and Fulton had way too much influence in ARL circles back in those days.
