I like your optimism. Sorry I’m feeling a little pessimistic atm. I just think it will take some strong and independent leadership which I am not so sure they have.

For example, let’s say hypothetically Fox tell them we’ll pay you more if you put the next team in Brisbane, are they going to say no?

Anyway, crazy thoughts but if the Bears have to come back and the Pasifika have to come in (have is not the right word for either but anyway) you may as well merge the two.

Firstly, as part of this idea for Pasifika there is already the admission that they won’t be playing all their home games at one venue. The Bears want to play some games at NS so fine that solves both these issues.

Secondly, they can’t or won’t base them in the Islands. Fine base them in North Sydney so second issue solved.

Thirdly, you are not going to alienate the target audience anymore with this plan then if you would if you put them in Cairns. If they are already inclined to follow it, then playing their games at NSO instead of Cairns isn’t going to stop them from following it

At least here if you take the two crazy ideas and merge them, you are not hurting any chances any other bid team or location from succeeding

A Pasifika team won't be created to please the Australian Audience, It is to grow the game across the pacific.

Attaching the Bears name to it gets enough interest from the media to make it a chance to work.

As opposed to a completely new team in a new market that will have limited interest, Both have the same outcomes really

Before we even entertain the idea, we cannot have a Pasifika side named the `Bears` , it`s just too ludicrous for words. How do you get around that.

It’s a good point. How do bears have any association with the South Pacific? There aren’t any. For a proposed club like this the name needs to mean something you would think.
As I said on another forum, and as a compromise and a nod to many Pacific Island cultures traditionally not wearing any clothes at all (read Captain Cook`s diaries of his journey`s in the South Pacific) perhaps the Bears might tweek the name to Pasifika Bares.

I can't recall which LU member has stated this in recent days, but I reckon they nailed it.

This "we can have 20 teams" is really just trying to create some urgency in one of the potential bidders so we can get some competition for the 18th spot.

Thats why they are putting all sorts of rubbish out there in the media (like Cairns PNG for example)

Perhaps. It does seem to suggest that they don’t have a clear idea per se but just fishing for the options.

Well, if that was the idea the fastest out of the blocks was W.A. with their Sports Minister holding a 4-minute press conference. I`m mean they are very, very keen.
Wonder if they are keen enough to put some financial guarantees in there in case the club gets into trouble, that`d be nice.

Well I think thats the end game the NRL are aiming for.

Get all sorts of commitment to funding from govt or a third party.

Lets just see how the aus govt goes with funding the png first, then they can tell WA " this is the price that was paid for png, you want one, pay up"
Or you can let the bears run it fifo from NS

I reckon that you have nailed that name to be honest. Very classy.

Knowing that, they would probably go with something completely different. Something probably awful like the Firehawks.
Its simple, its pacifika, and cairns local qrl team "Northern Pride" i love to throw that one in as much as i can, coz pride has several meanings, can be "proud" of your region, or it can mean a pack of lions
You put a lion as a mascot in the NRL, people will back it, its almost like when the dolphins were announced, it beat the firebirds and jets easier as a mascot/brand, and im loving the stan show, just finished episode 2, fmd waynes wery funny, i can see why he is such a good coach, he can be very relatable, and honest with the people around him.

My favourite line from him was "there's not enough ray stones out there in the NRL"

Anyway back to the lion, anyone starts talking about bears in the pacific, and mascots or animals that shouldnt represent whatever region, just remember, there is no such thing as a dragon, tigers are generally in indoneasia/india, not in balmain or western suburbs, titans broncos and cowboys in qld ...please!
Theres the roar and ALFs lions in brisbane, NRL could do with a big mascot like that, it would sell, it just has to be subtle enough that its remains the entity of a "Pride" maybe 4 colored shadows of a lion, something like the english logo, how its has the multiple (3) lions

I think you make a good point in there - Pirates, Easts Tigers (Firehawks) & Jets would be the conservative choices to take us to 20.

However if there's an appetite to get a club in each metro, Adelaide may knock out either the Ipswich or Brisbane Easts bids.

That's not just from a desire to get a team in every big Australian city, but realizing that one more team in SEQ may fit... but two more teams in that region - in quick succession - may be too fast & split the supporter/sponsor base there too much.

It's a pity the Bears aren't committing themselves to Adelaide. If they did then we could have every major city covered in a 20 team competition.

A thought has just occurred to me.. IF it turns out that the NRL just has the appetite for one more SEQ team when expanding to 20, what's the chances that the losing bid (whether it be Jets or Brisbane Easts or some new entity) make a play to buy the Broncos or Titans?

I can see the Tigers buying a minority stake in the Broncos.
