Well I think thats the end game the NRL are aiming for.

Get all sorts of commitment to funding from govt or a third party.

I saw snippets of Abdo in an interview and he said the plan is to be the number 1 sport in the Pacific, That needs more of a presence than the Warriors. How that extra team or teams are supported is a question from that

Its simple, its pacifika, and cairns local qrl team "Northern Pride" i love to throw that one in as much as i can, coz pride has several meanings, can be "proud" of your region, or it can mean a pack of lions
You put a lion as a mascot in the NRL,

Theres the roar and ALFs lions in brisbane, NRL could do with a big mascot like that, it would sell, it just has to be subtle enough that its remains the entity of a "Pride" maybe 4 colored shadows of a lion, something like the english logo, how its has the multiple (3) lions
Merlion? Then they can play some games in Singapore!

It's a pity the Bears aren't committing themselves to Adelaide. If they did then we could have every major city covered in a 20 team competition.

I can see the Tigers buying a minority stake in the Broncos.
Theyd be no NZ2 if Adelaide were to come in
Pacific Pride
Adelaide Bears
West Coast Reds

Before we even entertain the idea, we cannot have a Pasifika side named the `Bears` , it`s just too ludicrous for words. How do you get around that.

They might be nomads but will have a base, So I think who ever it is links up with a side to provide the pathways and corporate supports.

The Bears for example have an SG Ball team, No reason they can bring over a few people from each island to trial with that team.

Same applies to Northern Pride if Cairns is the base. The name can be amended to suit of course

Wherever they chose to base it, if it happens, it has to be with the view of what if? So what if the Govt funding runs out. Or more to the point what will they do with this side when the govt money runs out.
Based in Cairns how would it fund itself post Govt funding?
Do we want another team based in Sydney drawing from that well?
Thats why it seems to make some sense, if thats the right phrase for this proposition!, to base it in Wellington and have more focus on PI than PNG. At least it has some chance of being viable post Govt funding.
6 games in Wellington, 4 in PNG, 1 in Fiji, 1 in Samoa or Tonga.

Thats the opposite of why the govt wants to fund it for, they want it to be a majority PNG team... they aren't paying for a Wellington based team, screw them they can bid like everyone else has to

They may well but whose paying for a PNG team after the govt dries up? Cairns mayor?

I can't recall which LU member has stated this in recent days, but I reckon they nailed it.

This "we can have 20 teams" is really just trying to create some urgency in one of the potential bidders so we can get some competition for the 18th spot.

Thats why they are putting all sorts of rubbish out there in the media (like Cairns PNG for example)
Weird take

politis literally proposed this at the clubs agm

That’s funny
I wasn`t sure when posting that whether it would be considered offensive, hence the reference to Cook`s diaries to show I wasn`t making it up.
One other thing that I found very amusing reading his diaries was that at many of the Islands he visited they were welcomed with open arms, not the Maoris, anywhere he pulled up to an area that was inhabited by them they were met with blood curdling displays of aggression from the shoreline. Just goes to show, they were crazy even back then. ;)

The arlc will have this question sorted don’t worry sunshine

abdo said the 18th team has to stack up financially

this isn’t super league nrl actually does due diligence

They have a FT Super Rugby side from Fiji and a Pasifika team, They can learn from what work and hasn't worked with that.

So it isn't like any of this is trail blazing for sport

Those sides don’t have the Aussie govt stamping up the big ones

I suspect a cairns based png side would get way more revenue than those two union sides from sponsors in qld and png

Exactly my point. NRL is very strong to improve on it

Was thinking about this the other day when I think the Fijian union side upset the Crusaders at a game in Fiji, apparently a shock result. Showed me though the power and the pull of a potential NRL team playing out of the Islands.

It’s funny how afl can have gws and union fiji and pacifika yet when league gets the federal govt offering to pump in hundreds of millions that’s the bid that gets questioned about its finances ….
