Oh.. I know how this goes.. next step is that Murdoch/News Ltd launches a huge media storm over the NRL administration, triggers a club revolt, and the "problematic" figures are removed/forced to resign.

Pretty much.

Every time NRL discusses expansion you’ll get the most massive negative articles against it - can’t expand because there aren’t enough players or we can’t go there because it’s failed before or they don’t like the game. It’s infuriating.

The sad thing is those views permeate throughout the game, the administrations and fans believe it and essentially we’ll go with more Queensland teams because that’s what they want us to do. I was positive on Sunday that we might have woken up but I get the sense that we’ll cave like we always do.

Jesus the A-League have more independence and cojones than we do.

I never thought I would be saying this but maybe he might become a positive figure after all. For all my hatred of the Roosters, the bloke is a good businessman, seems to genuinely like the game and seems to be the one with a business mind who gets it.

I might have to have a shower now.
The worrying thing is when politis tabled the idea vlandys response was “it’s worth exploring” meaning the nrl hadn’t even considered this an opportunity before then!

It doesn’t surprise me. We are a game that has very low self confidence. It’s partially a hangover from the whole Super League thing but even putting that aside we have never really thought big.

I said it before somewhere else but we have been probably the worst run sport in this country - maybe you could throw in Rugby Union in that discussion. Any success we have is totally due to the product we sell, not by any managerial design or competence.

Think about this way, we don’t really have any great challenges, particularly not as great as a number of other sports in this country like soccer or basketball for example. Yet we as a sport are the ones who still don’t have a national footprint. They do a lot more with the little support they have and always likely will have. It’s absolute madness.

Agree that we are very poorly run but would argue that Soccer, Rugby, Cricket (huge BBL drop off, reliance on Ashes and India series), hell even V8 Supercars if you include that are worse.

Perhaps I should not have been so hasty.

I don’t know anything about motor racing so that means my point is mute as I never considered them. If you are a fan of V8’s and you say they are worse then I’ll bow to your better judgement.

Rugby Union is really bad. That was the other one I had in mind.

Soccer is difficult to judge I think. Yes the A-League is in a bad spot but they have the challenge of selling a pretty poor product relatively speaking. Anybody who follows soccer is most likely going to follow overseas leagues because they are just better quality. They made a massive blunder with Paramount though

I agree, cricket is another one that’s pretty poorly run. That sport is in a massive transition though and an interesting one as a fan.

Maybe we should put Politis in charge!
You'll regret it, if you did, great businessman, very questionable integrity, I'd be very wary of his motives... but again keeping the Roosters relevant has been his life long goal, had he not supported them, they have gone the way of the newtown jets way back in the 80s, my take on him is he values the game and by increasing the footprint, the 8 Sydney teams (bar dragons) dont look so daunting, and less chance of any cutting of them, Roosters are the low hanging fruit they dont offer the league anything different, infact they are a drain on the player pool.. i think he knows this

A league are charging expansion teams 25 million for entry

it’s just a cash grab the league will collapse

In terms of public and media perception - probably easily. That’s probably the advantage of having nobody take notice of you.

In terms of the actual finances and support etc I would say that they are going to struggle. That is unless they have already got benefactors who are going to underwrite the whole thing.

Ohh ffs, we have been operating without a Leagues Club for what 3 or 4 years now.
That is a fact, and a fact you've ignored in your post compared to other teams.
DO NOT SKEW THIS INTO A POKIE DEN FIASCO.
The fact Cronulla has recorded a profit without their main source of income should be congratulated.
Really mate, these are your posts that make everyone see you in that negative light.

Cronulla didn't have a huge Leagues Club. It's why they've increased its capacity. They will be much stronger after the rebuild, but only in generating revenue from gaming.

The best way to future-proof the club is by increasing its active supporter base so it can double its revenue from football operations. A new stadium in Sutherland would help generate more money from corporate hospitality and ticketing, but hat's not going to happen. The next best option is to take games against other Sydney clubs to the SFS. A derby between St George and Cronulla at SFS could draw 30k or more if it was marketed properly and played on a Sunday afternoon. Games against the Roosters, Eels, Bulldogs, Tigers could also be taken to SFS. At least trial something like this over a 3 year period to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't work then go back to Shark Park.

f**k. 7000 participants in the Shire compared to 4000 in a whole State.
Get a grip.

That's the problem with having nine clubs in one metropolitan area. There's more potential for one team in Perth to develop a large supportler base and strong corporate support than any of the nine clubs in Sydney because it will have a larger population and market all to itself.
