It’s funny how afl can have gws and union fiji and pacifika yet when league gets the federal govt offering to pump in hundreds of millions that’s the bid that gets questioned about its finances ….

Look, it's very straightforward.

If we get a PNG/Pasifika team added to the NRL that's subsidized by the Federal Government, then the Government changes to an austere, conservative party (oddly named the Liberals) which slashes the funding.. well, where does that money then come from?

Exactly, we are already approaching I trillion dollars of Federal Gov`t debt, how long before the next pandemic or natural disaster, or even recession that`s going to require a bail-out. At some point Govt`s will have to stop or be forced to stop spending like drunken sailors.

The NRL needs to think about that possibility. It's all very well to accept Government largesse, but you can't depend on it. Electoral & fiscal priorities CHANGE.

If a subsidized team is the go, there HAS to be a contingency plan for when funding is reduced, if not cut altogether.

Apparently the cairns mayor and PNG oil??? Clubs need to be generating $15-20million in football club operations. How on earth a PNG club based in Cairns would do that is yet to be explained.

It’s simple

the arlc will be asking this question

I mean I know this forum has experts in financial analysis but I think we can trust the arlc to ask this very simple question on the games behalf

Can someone run me through the great gamut of fully government subsidised professional sports teams in the history of the world?

Canberra pays 3 million pa for a Sydney afl team to play 3 games there

pick any nfl team where governments spend billions of dollars on stadia to get the team to move there

etc etc

The arlc should appoint you to be vetting the various bids

your undoubted financial acumen is wasted on these boards

And AFL pay $24mill plus to keep that team viable

thats investing in stadiums to entice, not giving cash to keep the clubs head above water

This forum seems to be people thinking of the most impossible scenarios as to why various expansion teams won’t work

Funny enough after my rant the other day about Matty Johns`s comment "it`s massive" regards the amount of oil money there is in P.N.G., Exxonmobil, a company indelibly associated (for better or worse) with oil comes out and announces a three-year sponsorship of P.N.G. Rugby League.

Png aid a year 620 million from Australia

20 to 30 million extra because of China is a very minor increase
