Rugby League has taken over Union in Australia.
Rugby league comes directly from getting people to come over from Union. Successfully!

Nowhere has Rugby League been able to get people over from AFL .

100% of the population are winnable in NZ ( they can still watch the 6 or so game the all blacks play 🙄)

80% of the population of Perth will never take to League.

Union fans = attainable.

AFL fans = Unattainable.

We have over 100 years of experience in this 🙄
you can't tell me this guy isnt an AFL troll....

I've been tossing and turning over this over the last few days.Ok I lie at least 5 minutes today.
My views FWIW
Pacifica team might be OK politically to stem China influence in the Pacific but as far as the individual countries that are included it means SFA.Look at Union's attempt no one give a rat's ring.
The fanaticism comes when Tonga play Samoa PNG player either. We saw that in the RLWC.
Bear in mind the Fed's May budget is going to be tighter than one of my mate's wallets(when it's his turn to shout).Sure they will allocate money for aid projects in the Pacific but for a team that may or may not stop China influence.
It's finally dawned on this thick skull of mine we are a friggin NATIONAL rugby league that means the emphasis must be( else we p*ss of the NATIONAL jazz) within this great land of droughts and flooding rains.
Yes secure if possible Federal funding to develop rugby league in the Pacific for grassroots. That assist these countries in developing an affinity with Australia ,rather than a country to the North interest in their commercial interests only.We get futur players for our code.
I remember some time ago in Fiji on Mana Island, which has an airstrip with rocks on each side of it.I watched a group of young Fiji kids playing touch with their bare feet, running like the wind, sidestepping rocks untapped athleticism and they didn't drop the pill .
Ok back to reality we certainly need an 18th team, a team that is either virgin territory, touched for the very first time (Perfff) or to use a Gallopism "fish where the fish" are(aka Dolphins)
Why? Because to secure the next TV deal that makes us all wet our denims and give PR an election(sic),this can only be achieved if we front the TV execs and say we have team no 18 domiciled in .........Perth....... West Brisbane. And yes you can have the Bear's logo. as part of Perth .

And you say why these two? Because they are Australian teams watched by the very audience that the very Australian Tv companies want to flog dog food, sports bet, vibrators etc and they get better deals with bigger audiences, not someone tucked away in Dunedin or a team that lacks either a state or a specific country.
We take away the mystique of Tonga and Samoa and PNG if. we combine them into a Pacifica team.
We need an 18th team, domiciled in this country in order to get the loot to grow grassroots and assist internationally. We have less of a chance securing the extra money needed to spread the code internationally, if we ATM have an 18th team that will not draw the TV ratings TV execs want and the NRL want.

I can see the club potentially selling out every game in PNG and making only a pittance from the gate after costs (like security) due to the very low ticket prices. I can also see them averaging only a couple of thousand for their Cairns games as locals may likely view them as an outsider team. I can also see them struggling to attract players and coaches, as people will still be put off by playing so many games away from their families. Nobody is taking their wife or girlfriend to Port Moresby. I’m not sure if you’re aware of the rape problem that exists there. Honestly, there’s pros and cons to it. That’s all I’m saying.
Which. Is why I counted their game day revenue at zero

they will still generate 3 million from sponsors merchandise and box sales

Your bad jokes aren't linking up well, calling cairns qrl "northern pride" a gay team due to a few blacktown boys who aren't progressive is a pretty long bow... although Pacific islanders might feel that way in sydney, the general island folk aren't too fussed about it, and papuans and folk from FNQ won't give two shits, as again a lion is a great moniker or mascot...
Isnt being gay still illegal in most of these countries? Should we be admitting such non inclusive societies into the nrl?

What the government wants a team for is different to what the nrl wants a team for

they aren’t mutually exclusive

the nrl aren’t admitting a png team because of China

nrl grant 17 million
Federal govt 25 million

Total 42 million excluding gate membership sponsors
Where’s the wifm for the nrl if all the govt money goes to propping up the club and nrl loses out in revenue from having it over another Australian club that would generate more tv and sponsorship revenue For them?

also no one has yet explained what happens in ten years or so when the govt money dries up?

China will have invaded Taiwan by then and we’ll be dead from nuke fallout

I’ve said it before but if it has to be a FIFO team then Cairns doesn’t even make sense for Travel or attracting players. People just think it makes sense because it’s closer on the map.

Cairns - Travel most or all weeks of the year, if they play any games in Cairns they’d have to make them against Cowboys or maybe Broncos to get anyone there because f**k all people are ditching the Cowboys or other NRL teams for a Pacifika or PNG branded team based there. Cairns doesn’t have direct flights to quite a few places they play away games so more travel there.

Brisbane or Sydney on the other hand.

Brisbane - Work with the NRL to play 5-6 games in SEQ to cut travel. 3 away games Vs Broncos, Titans & Dolphins. Home team for Magic round. Host Broncos or Dolphins at Suncorp, maybe a double header like the pre-magic one. Negotiate with other clubs and the NRL to have any games in Sunshine Coast or Toowoomba played with them as the away team. Partner with a Brisbane Queensland Cup team if possible for training facilities.

Sydney - Work with the NRL to play as many away games as possible in Sydney or within a bus ride distance like Newcastle, Central Coast, Wollongong or Canberra. Potentially most of their away games in the area.

Two problems I see there are
1: Sydney is already oversaturated with teams
2: Brisbane only have two currently, but they also have established QRL clubs who’d expect to be next in line for admission in QLD.
Auckland is the other possibility, having the best transport links to Fiji/Tonga/Samoa and the largest P.I. population, but it isn’t convenient to PNG and would heavily cannibalise the Warriors.

Agreed but it is still better than basing them in Cairns - you would cut down on travel tremendously and it would make it a lot easier to attract players if you are not hopping on a plane every week.

The other option would be realising you are not going to attract anybody (not many) and actually base them somewhere in the Islands

Nice in theory but the only city in the region where that would be remotely feasible is Suva in Fiji, which has a population of 330k in its greater urban area within 15km or so. But it’s still doubtful how easily a team based there would attract players from outside Fiji.
Apia (Samoa) and Nuku’alofa (Tonga) are tiny, with populations of 35k and 27k respectively, and Port Moresby is notorious as one of the most dangerous cities in the world for violent crime so it’s an obvious non-starter.

Yeah the number of potential home games in Cairns interests me. Let’s say it‘s 8 there, 3 in PNG and 1 in the Islands somewhere. So you’re talking being on the road for 17 out of 25 rounds. Even more with fewer Cairns games.

I can’t see Sydney happening because of the number of other Sydney clubs. Brisbane? Well like you’ve said, you’ve got 3 nearby games against SE QLD teams so less travel. Will Brisbane embrace a PNG/Pacific branded team though?

You would have to base it in Suva. The only other option I can think of (and this is pretty out there) is Hawaii.

Basing them there would kind of miss the perceived political point though. Also the travel would be pretty big (10.5 hours would make it a factor)

Been out for the day and just catching up.
Looks like you all agree on:
The difference between Rugby league and Rugby Union is the same as between Rugby league and AFL..

Then a page of legitimising a Pasifika team...

O and I'm an AFL troll..

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Great work team 🤣

The gated communities in Suva resorts are what I originally thought of when Pacifika was first mentioned That said it’s a big change for Australian players. How many games would you play in Suva and Port Moresby?

Probably 50% each. The idea of trying to play anywhere else on the Islands seems a bit far-fetched (to be fair a lot of this idea on the surface seems a bit far fetched)
