I’m not aware of Hunters games. It’s been over a decade since I’ve been there. But I was up there during State of Origin and a young man in the next village over was murdered over an argument about the game. That stuff doesn’t get connected to the NRL at the moment because they don’t have a team there and to be honest, Australians are largely uninterested about such things when Australians aren’t involved in it. But just like how A-League has to own the behaviours of Victory fans rioting, the NRL will own any violence related to a PNG NRL club, tangential or not. I’d say it’s not a scenario that would happen every week but passionate people who are poor and without many options in life are unpredictable. It’s a legitimate risk and one the media will take absolute pleasure in crucifying the NRL for.
The nrl will also own all the passionate fans that support their team

18 million population
Rugby league is the national sport
Federal govt to invest 250 million

it’s a no brainer

they should build a 100k stadium it would fill out for their games

Why have so few Papaun's played at NRL level in the just three decades?

For mine, the claim that its going to produce more players then any other geographic location, is overstated.
Before the warriors had an nrl team what percentage of nrl players were kiwi ? What percentage are they now ?

png beat gb in a test the last time they played

this is a weak argument your making

Out of interest what’s chasing Roos been saying about NZ?
He interviewed a NZ sports journalist, Basically League is going well, NRL clubs are going over and finding plenty of talent, NRL can offer them far more money than Union, League is strong enough in the south ( tradional Union heartland ) to have a NRL team. NZ doesn't have the bitterness between the codes, kids play both and fans follow both codes.

As you’d be aware these a big debate going on elsewhere here about this. Websites for the comps show a bit of a comeback for league comps outside Auckland but they have withered overall. There is no bid I’m aware of yet. Interesting days.

How much money would PNG bring in ? Would they add more money to the next TV deal? How much would they make from gate ? If the average annual wage is about 2k aud ( assuming my googling of that figure is correct) tickets for games would be about $5 ?

Feds are allegedly putting up 25 million pa for 12 years

in terms of tv money little difference between png and Perth for the ninth game

in the 12 years the govt is underwriting then they have a chance to build up a serious business or maybe the govt keeps the support up

but with the federal govt money they will have close to 40 million turnover already one of the biggest nrl clubs in terms of revenue

And what is this going to do for the NRL?

GDP per capita in PNG is $2673. That money is not going to make it's way to the NRL. Nor is the $250m of Australian tax payer money.

The NRL isn't a charity case to give an NRL licence just because they're passionate.

Utilise that passion and additional Australia tax payer money in improving your society. A png team in the nrl shouldn't be the catalyst for societal change, it is a patronising attitude.

unlimited future nrl players for one

development of international competition which makes money for the game down the track

in addition to just money the nrl has a duty to expand the game and png is a major undeveloped market

even if Perth or nz2 make more money for the nrl down the track so what

the feds are basically paying to expand rugby league for their own dumb reasons

if we don’t take the opportunity now it won’t be around later

Perth and nz2 come in later whats the issue

I've found that thread has derailed and most comments are from people living out side NZ. For a listen I've passed the podcast below, also some great podcasts on Toronto, Greece, USA and everything internationally.

Shitloads of Kiwis played in the BRL, NSWRL and ARL.

You clearly know f**k about the history of RL, being a Swans fan

And that was ten years ago

tbf I know you weren’t watching the arl before 95 so any comments about it will be clueless

Has there been any news on the Port Moresby Vipers approach to join in the NSWRL Comp?

The issue for me is that Perth or NZ2 are a more viable long term option compared to a PNG team dependent on Australian aide.

Why wasnt the last traditional prime ministers xiii game played in Port Moresby? Why did the qrl cup club have to be threatened to play there? Why does the Australian govt have a travel warning for png? Hmmm sounds an ideal place for an nrl club.

But do the locals have the $$$ to attend games on a regular basis, highly doubtful, it would probably be nearly a years wages for them to attend a few games.
Wages that the NRL would rather they gamble because we all know that’s what expansion is really all about.

Well if the Australian govt keep funding png at 25 milllon pa then png is more viable than both

neither can make up that 25 million which puts them on par with the richest nrl clubs

this png bid has been well thought out (other than pacifika)

it addresses all the alleged weakenss a png team could have

It’s like you know something None of us do?
pin reality:
You don’t know what govt is willing to pay or for how long,
you dont know what happens after money dries up,
you dont know where they’ll be based,
you don’t know how they’ll attract players,
you don’t know who will own and run the club
and you don’t know how they could possibly generate $15mill a year.
But apart from all that, yes it sounds very well though out lol
