Yeah I hope to see them as an 18th side. Then you can look at another team in QLD (to match the growing population) then perhaps an international side (preferably NZ) for either 19 or 20. It would be good to see a team relocate to Adelaide but I don’t think either the league or the clubs would have the guts/temerity to do it.
Perth, NZ2 and Brisbane 3 probably have the inside running for the next three spots.

There's your 20 team NRL, and that should do us for some time.

As far as order goes, Perth next then hopefully Brisbane 3 & NZ 2 at the same time so that an awkward weekly bye doesn't have to happen again.

While it'd be nice to get Adelaide back in the top tier, I just can't see the NRL having the vision to do it.. as you say - though I'd love to be proved wrong (especially if ONE relocation or demotion accommodates Adelaide inside a 20 team competition)

Yeah, but NZ's not a 3rd world country with serious security concerns AND practically zero disposable income.
A little bit judgemental there... sorry pal you're not good enough for NRL representation as your whole country is dirt poor, and you might not be able to afford our product... fmd

Doesn't change the truth though, does it?

From a financial & infrastructure viewpoint they're light-years away from NRL standard, while meantime you have Perth, Brisbane 3, NZ 2 and Adelaide on a far better footing to join the league before PNG - as others have both implicitly AND explicitly said.

Only Brisbane 3 have that with brisbane tigers, all others dont have shit... well perth have a staduim, but none of those areas have substantial populous of junior talent to be worth expanding to that area..
Might aswell relocate teams if you want dots on a map.. the reason for expanding is to boost the player pool otherwise its business as usual

There is a pathway for PNG players already, via the Hunters. There are also 17 NRL teams that they can aspire to play for.

How many have followed that pathway? Rather than wasting ridiculous amounts of money on an NRL team spend a bit of money making the present pathway more effective.
Well a possible 9 million population of PNG, funneling thru one reserve grade (qcup team) of what maybe 30 players then where whos the link to NRL, or more like who was the link for the past decade? Most of the qcup sides have a link to one, so no there really isn't a pathway, not until the dolphins just started this year

So how many players have been picked up from the hunters into an NRL team?

The standard isn't high enough in PNG and putting a licence there isn't going to miraculously change that. If the Hunters were dominating the queensland cup the natural progression is to move to an NRL team. The hunters are definitely not dominating.

The way to improve png standard is to invest money at the groundroots, not by throwing it at the top tier.

Crowd at the Jets today! Surely an asset to any expansion team not in the heartlands?

Or is not leveraging an existing footprint/history/brand the way to go for Perth/Adelaide?

Or both, either way unless theres a proper progression/pathway to go up to 1st grade, not sideways like most of the png players moving to UK or other qcup sides, nothing will change, who is the NRL link to 1st grade? There hasn't been one, you cant say how do they rise, when there isn't a team pulling them up.
your only using this past decade as a barometer for pngs growth... what's the progression of perth, adelaide and christchurch/wellington players in comparison, coz i dont see the past decade of players or more importantly teams that could rival reserve grade to what the hunters have produced in such time
