You did say the standard was awful lol

but fair point those kids won’t be playing afl
The standard was below par but their rep team at full strength would perform well in both the NSW Cup and QLD Cup.
Their two Grand Final teams North Beach and Fremantle do have some quality talent as does a team called the Joondalup Giants, another polynesian dominated team.
There is a front-rower who plays for the Giants Joell Irvine, how the hell has this guy not been picked up yet ?. Ffs if Shaq Mitchell can get a NRL contract, like seriously.

He also, in a past life, was vehemently opposed to a PNG side because quite sensibly he saw the financial problems in having a side there.

Now seemingly he is all for it.

That was before I realised how much support PNG has from Albo and V'landys. Now I'm really excited about the bid because it provides us with our best ever opportunity to convert PNG's enthusiasm for the game into goldmine of talent. We'll never get a better opportunity to turn PNG into a powerhouse.

The growing support for the Warriors is the reason I'm becoming more interested in seeing NZ2 get the 19th licence.

PNG and NZ2 have so much more potential than Perth.

Over the long-term I'd like to see a month in the middle of the season reserved for Origin and Pacific Test matches.

Queensland vs NSW
Samoa vs Tonga
PNG vs Fiji.
New Zealand vs England.

More content for the broadcasters. The potential to convert Pacific Tests into a source of income and increase the game's profile.

Do you really think a Perth-based team can match the upside of growing the game in PNG, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji?

I just don’t think it’s worth our time

Sydney is still growing in terms of juniors and many Sydney clubs should do more

png New Zealand and the pacific islands are where we can grow juniors a lot

PNG will never be a power house, it will take more than a NRL team to convert a poverty stricken Country start providing an endless line of rugby league champions.
Plus how many years are the Government willing to assist $$$ in helping PNG, they have already poured billions of resources into that area and for what ?.
It is still a shithole, it’s certainly not a holiday destination unless you want to do the Kokoda trail and half kill yourself lol.
Seriously what players will go there, even up to Cairns.
PNG is a dangerous place, it’s dirty, it’s smelly, ain’t nobody going there.

Clubs currently are expanding their borders.

Just this week the Storm did a video about the Sunshine Coast.

Whoever comes in will partner with multiple regions, That is the model moving forward

They likely will merge that bid with your team or something to make it viable

When I went over to WA recently I watched a local game between Fremantle and South Perth just to see the standard of their rugby league competition.
Both teams were stacked with polynesians and the crowd to.
Two weeks ago Perth held a Harmony Cup Tournament, massive weekend.
League is actually growing over there.
League will take off way faster in Perth than it has in Melbourne if they get a NRL team and they will certainly attract players over there, they just need to understand what kind of players to target because of its distance away from the East Coast.

Wouldn't this suggest that the South Pacific is more important than Perth?

We don't need an NRL team in Perth to convert its Polynesian residents into RL players. Invewt more on development pathways to get them into the NRL.

If we're going to expand into a region because it has lots of Polynesians then Logan/Ipswich would be the best candidate?

Driving through Logan during the RLWC was a real eye opener. Houses were proudly displaying the flags of the Tongan and Samoan national RL teams. It was similar to Origin.

or
brisbane3 if png turns out to be smoke and mirrors
Or
Adelaide bears if nrl really wants to grow a pair and try and be a nationally relevant competition.

there will likely never be abetter time to bring perth in than now, supportive wa govt won’t be around forever, crowd buzz is back after the disappointment of 2013 as witnessed by 43k turning up to watch nrl, be honest who’d have thought perth would ever draw 43k to an nrl game?

I really hope not, I don’t want the Bears connected to this, I feel after a few years it will be a absolute train wreck and the Wests Tigers will finally be able to off load that wooden spoon.

Piss of with your Adelaide Bears and it was two NRL games that drew 43k

You are basically being paid to set up an NRL club. As opposed to going to Perth or NZ and having to handle all the cost alone.

Also Cairns as opposed to Sydney or Brisbane is a huge risk

Without the funding promised by Albo I wouldn't be on board the PNG bandwagon. The bid is creating academies and investing in the local game. It's the most progress we've seen in PNG RL.

Players not wanting to join a PNG club will be the reason it will garner support from 16 the 17 NRL teams. Everyone wins. It's why coaches voted for Perth in a poll.

What happens when Gov support dries up?

The club will be left to fend for itself. No fancy stadium upgrades. No money for a high performance training centre. Club will struggle to keep up with the other teams.

WA Gov isn't as supportive of a Perth-based NRL team as the Aus and PNG Gov are about the PNG bid.

The problem with pathways that we invest in two states.

Clubs are pushing out beyond boundaries.

Storm are in Victoria, I back them to know where best to invest then some pencil pusher in Sydney.

The 2nd tier being based in QLD or NSW does pose a problem but the State Bodies don't want to change, So not how you get around that.

Clubs are flying kids in to play junior reps though, So there is some development coming from outside areas

A few questions: does this government money suddenly make PNG a developed country? Does it stop the violence, particularly against women, that is fairly prevalent in the country? Does the average person suddenly earn more than $70-80 AUD per week and be able to attend regular games?
Who is playing for this team - how are they recruiting players? How are they keeping their talent? What happens if or when the government stops funding this team - how are they supporting themselves?

I’m not suggesting that it can’t or won’t work because I can’t see the future (nobody can) but you can easily identify a few issues with this idea.

I’m strongly in favour of a second New Zealand side and would much rather that than this. Perth would offer more broadcasting money than this PNG side and you go where the population is going. Do a third Brisbane side in a decade or so and there are your 20 sides.

his is my main issue with a PNG side, yes they are getting handouts from the Aust Govt, but where do most clubs get their $$$ revenue from ?.

1). TV viewers, most houses in PNG don’t even have electricity.

2).Memberships, seriously these guys are on the poverty threshold, how many of them will buy club memberships and will they be at discounted prices ?.

3).Merchandise, can you honestly see a PNG household which is lucky to earn $100 a week spend that on NRL merchandise, four different club jerseys a year, training gear, flags, cups etc, etc.

4).Admission prices, How much will it cost to watch a NRL game in PNG ?, if they are the same as in Aust then PNG will have no crowds, will locals be heavily discounted ?, can you see PNG supporters travelling to away games ?.

These are things that need to be looked at seriously if PNG get the 18th license, otherwise NRL merchandise shops will need bars on all of its windows and doors because any will get ripped down just in the vicinity of Port Moresby.
Sure rugby league has a huge following in PNG but the Countries economics just don’t support a team there.
If I am proven wrong, great, but I honestly can’t see it.
That 600 million will be gone before you can blink.
