Essentially your argument is

ignore the previous failure of the western reds
Ignore the force and glory

and juniors and tv ratings don’t matter
essentially your argument is
1997 and 2026 are exactly same as each other
NRL is same comp now as in 1997
NRl cant be successful as union and soccer arent

and perth has no jnrs or tv audience and cant grow them despite all evidence to the contrary

seems legit lol

So they cut the the Reds to save money, then brought in a Melbourne team that cost them $100m over 20 years?

That doesn't make any f**ken sense and is as stupid as mongoose's conspiracy theories.

Reds were drawing less than 9k to throe games. Cowboys were drawing 18-20k per year. It was a no brainer to keep the Cowboys and punt the destitute Reds. Argue around the fact all you like, but the Reds didn't have a viable fanbase and business case to justify a spot in the NRL.
you're being very selective with your data there. Like I said last ever Reds game v raiders in 1997 was 12.3k, not 9k.

It's still 97 in his mind. The world has gone past the old timer.

There were an overwhelming number of people on here who said another beisbane team was a bad idea and it shouldn’t be the dolphins

the same people who think Vegas is a waste of time and the sky nz tv deal is going down

I remember Perth Red and pennywisealfie saying Brisbane should only have one team. A few other people used the Crushers to argue against a second Brisbane team.

the $17mill grant is approx 40-50% of revenue needed to run a NRL club.
Can a PNG club get 15k fans attending and 20k + members paying full NRL prices?
Can it generate $7-10mill in corporate support?
Thats what they need to be viable.
There seems to be an overwhelming number of people who dont think so.
They don't need to generate anything from game day revenue when they're guaranteed $20m per annum from the Aus Gov.

It takes more then $20M to run a team, especially one that will have to travel to EVERY game it plays.

And the other teams will have to cop there being ZERO increase in TV monies, and take less dollars from the NRL grant.

Luckily for all of us, Albo is so on the nose at the moment, that this lunatic idea is DOA.

To be fair they would probably get a grant over and above what the government is giving them; notwithstanding, the fact that government money is more likely than not to end at some stage, it is a pretty big motza ball.

None of them have provided a figure on how much the Storm are worth to Ch9 and Foxtel. They don't know. It's all speculation on their behalf.

To be fair you’re the one arguing that they don’t provide much worth to Ch 9 and Foxtel or that the deal hasn’t increased much with them in the competition. You haven’t provided any evidence either.

It’s a Schrödinger’s cat in any case. There are multiple possibilities and nobody has any definitive proof for their position.

That’s definitely not true.

There might have been a couple (maybe) but not an overwhelming number of people.

A few people isn’t an overwhelming number of people. A second Brisbane team should have been in the competition for the past twenty odd years - pretty much straight after the Crushers got cut.

Agreed. Their attendances weren’t great. What was the attendances like overall though? Rugby League attendances were pretty awful in the 90’s.
It's a stupid argument anyway. The Crushers and Chargers crowds were even less then the Reds (like far less).

No one would argue that was a reason not to have a team in SEQ in 2023 though

Exactly. It’s called context.

Crowds dropped by around 30% from 1995 to 1997 and that was from a pretty low mark. For the past 15-20 years, crowds are about 50% higher than what they were in those days and double what the ARL competition was in 1997.

Jesus compared to back in the 1980’s, we are more than double

Different times.
