We danced around it but we finally got there. Hopefully he learned the lesson and doesn’t just take broadcasters by their word. We have different interests to them we shouldn’t just heed to them all the time. Channel Nine and Foxtel used money that they saved on this deal and spent it on our competitors.

They do have contra for sure but what’s the plausible scenario here - that the increase is only contra or they did indeed get a fairly sizeable increase.
The scenario is the afl increase wasn’t that impressive when you take out contra and the fact they had To provide more content

and we have way more content to sell now than before

1. new pre season comp
2. New post season comp
3. Expanded nrlw and origin.
4. dolphins
5. Team 18

From the Maths above

NRL $2.2bn - up until 2027
AFL $3.8bn up until 2031

Difference is $1.6bn which RL should make up from the next deal this despite the difference in length of game etc.

Assuming as predicted the 9th game brings in $100m extra. This is why going early and bringing expansion forward seems better for the game.

I'd be on your side of the fence if not for expansion. I'd rather that then keeping the same for 3 extra seasons and possibly expanding next tv deal

As for tender.

AFL and cricket knocked back more from Paramount 10. Those issues are valid for RL.

So while no offical tender process was in place. Behind the scenes homework would of been done
Nrl tv deal will be 550 to 600 million which will be more then the afl tv deal (500 to 520 million excluding contra)

Fox/ch7 got an extra round for free the 2 years BEFORE the deal started.

The unknown is how much ch9 paid for NRLW origin

Annoying thing is the same people who are quick to bag the nrl tv deal are the ones who accept the afl tv deal at face value

Last time there was mass expansion in the 90s wasnt the ideal time for it. But it's the right and perfect time for that same kind of mass expansion....Perth Adelaide NZ-2, Briabane West, PNG....all at once or over a 5 year period.

The money is there now in big tv deals, social media, global market, increased player pools from countries around the world, etc etc.

I get it at the time.

We have had the players confirm their % to know the NRL deal.

Also know the add ons from AFL and saw what cricket did. There is enough data to see that our deal is horrible as some make out when comparing to the other 2 big sports here

I think we will always get ripped off because Murdoch is a wanker from Victoria and knows how to pit the clubs against the ARLC Chairman and CEO. If we were united then we would have more bargaining power.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

but if the afl deal was so good they wouldn’t be hiding it behind Telstra contra

you know that’s bs

Its not bs just because you and the folks on League Unlimited say it is. The AFL has literally included Telstra in its media rights announcements for the last 20 years - because unlike Telstra and the NRL, Telstra actually are a media rights holder for the AFL. (specifically the AFL and club website networks, and associated replay, highlight and on demand rights that go with that) - Telstras contra value is unknown, (they are paying 50m a year under the current deal for the aforementioned rights) - as it is for the NRL in its naming rights sponsorship deal.

Note also that Mclachlan specifically said the deal gave them "North of 4bn" in cash - putting the cash component from AFL rights sales at least $571m per annum. At the close of the last deal total AFL contra was 16m total per year - even if that doubles - the league could top 600m in cash reeived from its media deals - radio rights will go toward that too (something that is partially included in the NRLs current rights with Nine)

AFL can include anything they like in their announcement.

Though if we are discussing whether NRL undersold to Fox/9 then you need to compare Fox/7 in AFL and cricket.

If we are talking revenue as a whole then you include the whole thing, It makes these comparisons Apples v Oranges. Even more so with the Marvel Upgrades
Though that is what people choose to use to come to the conclusion.

Which you cant do because no one knows what Fox paid for either. Its all guess work. The sooner Fox launch on the ASX the better.

True enough.

We saw the real figure released by a news ltd announcement Which excluded the Telstra contra

the thing about Telstra contra the afl can . say the wifi upgrades at marvel are worth 500 million when the real cost to Telstra is 50 million

Are you suggesting telstra is paying afl $50-70 mill cash now? I thought it was all marvel upgrades yesterday?

actually we only saw a total figure published by the AFL as well as Mclachlans presser and Sevens report to the ASX. We have no actual data from the others - we saw guesses by everyone else.

Get back to me when you have any real information on this.

The AFL do actually publich broadcast revenue so we'll see.
