18th club, whose next?

What if the NRL say "We need a team in Perth, so we call for bids for a Perth team", and they get 3 bids..

- West Coast Pirates, endorsed by the WA Govt.
- Some WA-based private consortium, giving it a go.
- North Sydn- err.. Perth Bears. Basically Norths promising if they're selected they'll play most home games in Perth, with say 3 at North Sydney.
Would have to go with the Pirates.

Could well be the case, the other bids would have to have something very compelling for the nrl to not choose a govt backed bid you’d have to think.

could even by 4 given Puddy has previously said he’s got a consortium ready to bid to bring the Reds back and Sage in the past has been keen to have an nrl club to co-administer along with the Glory.

Do they want to risk competing with the bears at another location like nz when they would probably lose ?

the best thing about this is the reds actions helped to kill off the bears so the revival of league in Perth will most likely be via the bears whilst the reds are consigned to the dustbin where they belong

Oh and all the moaning by cowboys and Perth fans about footing the travel costs in 1995

super league made toulose pay visiting teams travel costs last year and you don’t see them having a cry about it

I’m sure if they didn’t have to pay travel costs they’d have a stronger squad and maybe avoided relegation but they played by the rules

So the possibles who‘ve been publicly keen so far

Puddy Reds
Cumins Pirates
Sage (registerd quokkas)

of course there could be others we don’t know about yet

the WAGovt have employed a consultancy firm to review the potential bidders and decide who to hitch their wagon on.

Bears are unlikely to bid on their own for a WA team. Puddy has dismissed them in the past. No word on if sage or cumins would get in bed with them.

it’s all as clear as mud at this point!

You do know Toulouse are on the verge of bankruptcy don’t you? Lol not a great example to pick!

in fact 4 of 4 teams that have been saddled with covering all travel costs have either gone from their comps or been on the verge of going bust.

its clearly not a good idea!!

Are they on verge of bankruptcy or just have debt to clear?! Other superleague teams lost millions last year too

They are in debt and without the owner agreeing to pay it off they’d be bankrupt. They haven’t signed a full squad because they have no money. The owner wants to offload them. Whichever way you look at it they are currently an unsustainable club. Partly no doubt due to having to cover travel costs for everyone. Like I said they are a great example of why you shouldn’t saddle clubs with travel costs, like Toronto, perth and cowboys before them.

Word from TO is article headline was sensationalist. Teams lose money over a season all the time. St Helens lost over 1 million in 2021. Club picked up a superleague forward from latest news

It’s ok losing money one year if you’ve got the asset base to cover it or confident next year you can cover the loss. That’s not the case for Toulouse. They are in debt, haven’t signed a full squad because they are in debt, have no way of covering the debt other than the owner covering it out of his own pocket And he has had enough and is going to offload them. They’ve only got 19 signed players and season kicks off soon!

to use them as an example of why asking clubs to cover travel costs isn’t a problem is laughable given their sad predicament. Throw in history of the other 3 clubs saddled with the same thing and a pattern is pretty clear to see!

Ur wishing club's demise to prove point, but ppl are saying headline is overreach. They shouldn't be covering cost of travel, but remember dragons right next door in smaller city & making it work.

Dragons don’t cover travel for other clubs
im not wishing anything, I’m telling you how it actually is
its not overeach, it’s reality and the only way out of their debt is their current owner, soon to be former owner, covering it.
it’s the ultimate in stupidity to say toulouses current dire situation wasn’t in part caused by them being saddled with extra travel costs. Just like Perth, cowboys and Toronto before them who all faced major financial issues.

What is @Wb1234 trying to argue?

Toulouse was saddled with the travel and accommodation expenses of opposition clubs. After their initial season in Super League they ended up in debt to the tune of €500,000. They still have a debt of €200,000 that needs to be paid before April.

It's an example of why one team shouldn't have to cover the travel and accommodation expenses of other teams when they at their home ground. The RFL has really set the game back in France.
