It’s hard to see a pasifika or png side actually getting the nod. A 2nd Qcup team in png based in Lae would be a better option. For 20 teams it should really be between only 3 options
- Brisbane 3
- Perth
- NZ 2

Not sure visionary is the right word if it's not their idea, just being told & paid to do the government's idea

The money would be better spent developing RL pathways and infrastructure in PNG until port moresby is capable of sustaining its own permanent team than wasted on a bastardised fifo team

Build a high performance centre, set up RL scholarships/Visas and invest in the PNG hunters in the QCup

Set up similar on the other Pacific islands, and potentially also introduce a yearly pacific draft (which like the AFLs draft can also be televised and sold off as preseason content)

The best X number of up and coming pacific talent go up for grabs, with the bottom dwelling teams also getting a leg up with early draft picks, tigers could be getting the best new pacific talent every year
Perth only is being discussed because of govt money

end of the day Albo wants an nrl team not a qld cup team

Ipswich Jets should get the spot and Dolphins should add Redcliffe to their name. Hopefully the government are still keen on a 18k-25k stadium in Ipswich.

South QLD would be set -

Dolphins - North Brisbane, Morten Bay, Sunshine Coast. 4 games between SSC/Redcliffe, 8 Games Suncorp.

Broncos - City, East Brisbane, South Brisbane
12 Games Suncorp.

Jets - West Brisbane, Ipswich, Springfield, toowoomba. 8 games Ipswich, 4 games Suncorp.

Titans - Gold Coast, Northern NSW.
12 Games Gold Coast.

24 Games at Suncorp, 24 games in other regions/stadiums in south Queensland, not including Magic round or other teams taking games there. The NRL should then schedule these four teams & maybe cowboys to be playing marquee matches on Good Friday, Easter Monday, And Anzac Day games at Suncorp.

A 3rd team in SE Qld would certainly be the "quick win" out of all the options , but gees.. it's a soft choice right now.

I'd love to see each wave of expansion have an element of "let's go to AFL-land" to balance out consolidation of our heartland.

So this wave we have Dolphins, then (hopefully) Perth.
Next wave (teams 19-20) we have one of Brisbane3 or NZ2, with Adelaide being the other team that comes in.

State government investment in a permanent team is much more reliable than an off hand comment about funding from a federal government for a regional team fifo to a 3rd world nation in response to ever evolving geopolitical drama

Actual investment in png and solidifying pathways into existing NRL clubs would be much more beneficial for everyone involved right now - with a goal to build to that port moresby will one day have a permanent team

A Cairns based team would bring in 30 odd squad members to a racially based team that anyone half decent would be poached instantly anyway

A very well funded high performance centre with scholarships and pathways set up to every NRL club could bring in many more, and also improve the livelihoods of all these aspiring players 10 fold

In the time frame they want though

Without a National Reserve grade thrown in makes it hard.

That said they will do the hybrid PNG or Pasikifa side to have both options.

And where would the Perth players come
From?

What you say is going to happen no matter the side that comes in

Anywhere, same place every other clubs comes from, could even set up something with PNG, hunters don't have any feeder arrangements

And exactly, so why not actually expand the games footprint

I don’t think that’s going to happen (unfortunately)

The game will probably go with something like this PNG thing and then go two other Queensland sides or something.

You think?

I can definitely see it happening now.

It is the same tired argument as a retort: fish where the fish are. As per that article
Funny analogy since over fishing is a real issue these days in a lot of areas

If the fish are dollars then a brand new market has many more fish

Fish as players comes from grassroots funding, helped somewhat by the presence of a club yes, but not reliant on it

I agree. That’s the analogy they use though. As Shane Richardson said in the article there are a lot more fish in Brisbane then there are in Perth or in the South Island.

Yep im aware

Those fish are already being caught and eaten

There's new fish to catch elsewhere, but involves an initial effort

OR...do both...it is the very point of having this team, and build an acedemy and have the pathways link towards it
