Do you think it will be a PNG bid or a combined pacific islands team from the government ?.
I’m going to do some serious digging at next weeks NSW Cup GF in regards to the Bears and what area they are thinking of latching their claws into.
I’m hoping Perth but I have a feeling it will be this Pacific Islands bid from whispers I have heard.
As for all this talk about US players, does anybody have any info on Perth Joondalup Giants winger Travis Haney ?, I’ve heard that he is American, that he was the 2023 winger of the year in the Perth comp but he didn’t get selected in the WA CAS squad because he was still way too green ?.
I hope it is exclusively PNG but who knows? Whatever it is the Aus Government is obviously dead serious about it.

Perth bid is the way to go for team 18. There NEEDs to be NRL representation in all corners of Aus. We have North (NQ) , South (Melbourne) and East (The whole east of Aus tbh, including the Wahs). We are just missing that Western Aus representation. Any idea if HBF can get approved for 4.5k seats to bring it up to 25,000?

I would love to see NZ2 (south island maybe?) as team 19. number 20 I will leave that up to the NRL to decide. I'd much rather the NRL actually capitalise on making a genuine pathways system in PNG, alongside a genuine Polynesia one too.

Even if it is supposed to be PNG exclusive how many PNG players are expected to be in the side ?.
Look at Justin Olam against the Roosters the other night, you can understand why Bellamy has dropped him, Olam just runs in and on many occasions takes nobody and it’s trytime for the opposition.
It happened on Friday night Olam raced in, took nobody, ran around in a circle all while the Roosters were scoring beside the posts.
I know many PNG supporters were very unhappy with their PM’s 13 squad saying that too many Hunters players were selected and not enough local players and that they were going to get beaten by 100 points again.
I’ve added the Facebook page, some interesting comments on there if you have time to read through them.IMG_2585.jpeg

That’s why I’d hold out on a PNG side till 2030. Lot of work to be done first.

I think the ratings for this f-ball as compared to ours showed that this is an absolute no-brainer for the long-term commercial strength of the game. Like the Chinese proverb says, " when is the best time to plant a tree - 20 years ago, the second best time - now."

Travis Haney got injured and missed the back end of the year. He’s had 2 years at Joondalup and is getting better the more he plays. He wouldn’t look out of place in the state team if he was available

Four new teams in no particular order:

New Zealand Orcas - 6 home games in Wellington, 6 home games in Christchurch, 2 away games in Wellington, 2 away games in Christchurch (So an 8/8 split between cities).

Pacific Crocodiles - owned by Brisbane Tigers & PNG group - 4 home games in Brisbane (against Broncos, Titans, Cowboys & Dolphins), 3 away games in Brisbane (against Broncos, Titans & Dolphins), 1 Magic round game in Brisbane, 8 home games in Port Moresby (So an 8/8 split between cities).

Western Swans - 12 home games in Perth

Adelaide Sharks - 12 home games in Adelaide, 4 away games at SFS (Tigers, Rabbitohs, Roosters, Dragons), 4 away games in rest of Sydney (Panthers, Eels, Bulldogs, Sea Eagles).

a second auckland team would just dilute the product in that market imo.

the only problem with other potential cities is the obvious smaller populations and rival super rugby franchises.

its very encouraging and yet very frustrating at the time time in that RL in New Zealand has never been stronger both on and off the pitch yet there’s only 1 NZ based NRL franchise and the kiwi public hardly ever see the kiwi RL national team On home soil.

NZ2 is probably the most difficult proposition to get right. There's only one metropolis in New Zealand that can compete with Brisbane and Sydney. Auckland. It has a team that draws better support than most Sydney teams, but not to the same degree as the Broncos.

If we could have two Auckland teams that are the size of two large Sydney clubs then that would be great for the game.

I don't know if the regional areas of New Zealand are ready for an NRL club.

Patience

it was only the start of the year we were all wondering if the years away from nz had made the public lose its connection with their rugby league team

Peter vlandys has his finger on the pulse of the game. What’s going on in nz won’t be missed

the end of season test series will capitalise on this season

and 2027 Auckland will be getting origin the same year the union World Cup comes to Australia

a coincidence ? I think not
Not convinced that hosting origin means anything as Perth has hosted origin games in the past and nothing has come of it.

Perth/WA being the next Australian based NRL side is biggest no-brainer of all no-brainers.

we already have genuine pacific pathways in place with the hunters and silktails that just need a little tweaking and the game is setup nicely in Australasia and the pacific.
