Of course Gilchrist did the job of a great all-rounder anyway, allowed you to have 4 specialist bowlers who couldn't really bat (although no doubt Warne would talk himself up) and people like the Waughs ,Blewett etc to bowl a few overs when needed
.

Pidge was a bit of a leek with the bat but I wouldn't say we generally carried four bowlers who couldn't bat. In fact I reckon during our couple of dominant periods our tail would have contributed more than most in the world tbh. Warne was absolutely no mug, Dizzy had just about the best forward defence of all time, Brett Lee was very handy. Even McGrath could hang around even if he didn't score many himself, he batted Steve Waugh and Mike Hussey to hundreds in particularly memorable stands.

I quiet like the rebuilding phase, its interesting and its good to see players develop.

We spent a long time on top of the rankings but we cant stay there for ever, quiet happy to let some one else have a turn

Curious to see how Ferguson goes for the Black Caps. It would be nice to have a genuine quick who doesn't break down every couple of games.

No Taylor, no Anderson, no McClenaghan, no Milne, no Sodhi...though half of those guys would be 50/50 to make the XI anyway.

So we are looking at-

Guptill
Latham
Williamson
Nicholls
Munro
Watling
de Grandhomme/Neesham
Santner
Southee
Henry
Boult

Whats are Australia looking like? Will it be...

Warner
Finch
Khawaja
Smith
Bailey/Maxwell
M. Marsh
Wade
Faulkner
Starc
Hazlewood
Cummins

Or does Maxwell go to 6 and bowl 8-10 overs?

Good side

For what its worth, Maxwell averages 5-6 overs per ODI he plays...but 3-4 over the last 10 ODI games that he's played. Of course, there are variables to consider with that stat.

I think you are pretty close although Oozie is not even in the squad for some silly reason. Probably Bailey and the Toyman and omit one of Falkner or MMArsh. We generally go with 4 bowlers and the fifth spell is 10 overs made up from part timers like Maxwell.

Depending on the surface maybe replace Faulkner with Zampa but I image our high performance guru will be rotating our bowlers in particular form the arduous duty of bowling 10 overs a day.

shame Taylor wont be there, puts that little bit more pressure on Williamson to carry the batting

wow

I didn't even check...just assumed Khawaja would be there.

Finch has been pretty lean for some time, hasn't he?

So Smith bat's 3, Bailey 4 and Maxwell 5

yep

you have to wonder about our selectors, our most in form batsman is omitted and yet not so long ago, he was in the ODI team and not the test team

Taylor has his moments, for sure, and is better than Nicholls...but I'm not sure he relieves the pressure that is on Williamson. Has been meh in 2016 in ODI's

I really rate George Bailey, but he's been pretty poor in 2016 too, hasn't he? Particularly in South Africa.

Yep, I don't understand Khawaja's exclusion at all.

From memory, in our last series (in NZ), your 3, 4, 5 was your big problem- (Smith, Bailey, Maxwell). Matt Henry was memorably all over Bailey.

I suspect our problem will be our 4,5,6 this time - no idea who they'll be but Nicholls offers little, Munro and de Grondhomme are interesting but gambles, and Neesham has done all his good stuff in tests....

Nicholls seriously needs to start delivering something with the bat.

I think it's a good balance but Nicholls has serious issues with his back foot completely caste. His balance is fairly ordinary and he tries to compensate with his hands.

Tough to win in Australia though. They're a good ODI outfit at home.

In Australian conditions I'd have been tempted to have Brownlie as the middle order rotate the strike guy tbh. Just not seeing the Nicholls love

Guess there's Watling for that, so maybe he'll bat further up amongst the 'hitters'
