I went to bed the minute South Africa were all out... when I turned it on to Fox Sports News this morning, I couldn't believe my eyes.

Your team is 5/15 and you charge at the bowler. Well done Haddin!

Clarke's innings showed there isn't much wrong with the pitch.

This.

Out of the 23 wickets that fell yesterday, a large percentage was due to poor shot selection. I mean, South Africa have managed to get to 1/81 at stumps in their 2nd dig, and Clarke and Siddle made the tail wag a bit in our first dig. It was just those 20 other wickets that fell.

 I laughed at South Africa crumbling last night, then go to bed and wake up to this mess, Philander getting 5-15 is good for him, he is a talent.

Time for the pie chucker Johnson to go, also Haddin and Hughes can join him.

Shitchell, Shittle, Haddin & Punter can all f**k off oh and last but certainly not least, Justin Langer, absolute joke of a batting coach.

I think Siddle is worth hanging onto really, if anyone ever gets through his brain to tell him that when you pitch it up you bowl well and take wickets he'll be good for us. Unfortunately he varies between excellent and non-threatening

Siddle is a Merv Hughes clone...useful when he pitches up, but too often too short/wide

I can't see us winning this one barring a miracle. Our batsmen need to take a good long hard look at themselves. Can they not leave a ball?? Disgraceful batting. Haddin will surely not play the first test at the Gabba.

150 odd runs with 9 wickets in hand for victory. After yesterday, anything could happen, but the pitch doesn't seem to have any real demons, so as long as South Africa keep their heads, they should do it in a canter.

The pitch had enough in it yesterday for Watson to get one of the quickest 5fers in test history. SA certainly weren't keeping their heads at that point. Their bowling would have their tails up, but don't forget that their batsmen got rolled in a single session yesterday. A couple of quick wickets and that's all they'll be able to think about.

Never underestimate the ability for a Saffer team to lose the unloseable. Of course if we bowl like shit and sustain zero pressure we're no chance and don't deserve to be.

Shit Unit, you've lost the plot mate. Clarke's ton was all class no arse. Fantastic innings. As for the rest of the batting there have been some genuine wicket taking balls, but more poor batting.

I think today is pretty much the day we can say stick a fork in Ponting, Haddin and Johnson. They're done and we have replacements ready to go. Ponting has had enough chances. We should have cut the cord after Melbourne. Haddin gets more stick than he deserves due to unfair comparisons to Gilly, but he looks like he's hit the wall and at 34 he's not likely to get back into top form, and Johnson always has been a fraud and unless he wins the game for us tonight then piss him off. The myth of his last tour to SA will be exposed for what it was - a flash in the pan. His rare good days just aren't worth all of the crap separating them.

Marsh too must be looked at seriously. As someone noted Doug got punted for fitness issues, well Marsh hasn't seen out a full season for how many years? 05/06 was the last time he got through a summer without breaking. He's smoked his critics (like me) with his batting since coming into the side, but he's no use as much more than a fill in guy if he's going to get injured so often. He might need to be passed over. A similar call could be made about Harris, but we all know at his age he's really only there as a stop gap until the Cumins, Hazelwoods, Pattinsons etc are ready. We should be looking to a long term guy at 3. Marsh breaks, so it should be Uzi.

Hughes will always have his haters, but his ton last start should earn him a spot until the end of the NZ tests. After that though if he hasn't put several good scores down then probably time to move on.

Watson always was a questionable call as opener and it looks like he's being found out. His bowling must keep him in the side, but he should go down to 4 to take Punter's spot as a first move and then reassess after a good shot there. It will allow him to bowl more and as he's shown lately he can do a great job either holding up an end and slowing the scoring or bagging wickets when there's a little in the pitch. Either way I think his bowling has improved way beyond his batting where he pretty much commands a spot as a top three quick. Amazing change from the 140kph straight pies he used to bowl. Dropping the pace and letting it do a bit has transformed him, but it does look like his batting has been affected.

With Marsh out next match I'd be getting Warner and Wade on a plane and straight into the side along with Uz. Copes should probably come in for Shitzell, but if Watson is right to bowl plenty without the pressure of opening then maybe Cumins could be worth a crack.

Yep, just showed how pampered batsman are these days. The moment the pitch is seaming or spinning todays players are all at sea. Who remembers the first test wicket against Sri Lanka??? The wicket spun a bit everyone jumps up and down we put in a complaint but it was the only test that was a contest between bat and ball.

Madunit makes a good point when he mentions what batsman average these days. Their averages are all inflated due to the flat wickets and the lack of real quality bowlers in world cricket. And it will continue to happen with the obession for good batting tracks to make test matches last 5 days and the emergence of drop in wickets. If someone like Viv or AB played today they would average over 60 quite easily.

That 1st test vs Sri Lanka was one of the best test match wickets I have seen for quite a long time. Yeah, it goes to show how pampered batsmen are today, compared to 10+ years ago. Such a shame that the 2nd and 3rd tests of that series were played on flat wickets.

Reminds me a lot of what's happened in India. India used to be renowned as a spinner's paradise, but have been making flat pitches ever since the aftermath of that 4th test back in 2004 in Mumbai. Since then, the TV stations have requested flat pitches so they can have 5 days of cricket (since I remember reading that the TV stations in India get paid per day, so obviously, they want the match to go the maximum 5 days), hence more money, but quality of cricket is compromised when teams consistently score 600+ in the first innings.
Now, I'm not requesting that pitches should be like that infamous test between West Indies/England in 1998, where it got called off in the first few overs or so. That's an extreme case. However, there needs to be something in the pitch for the bowlers.

I really hope that this summer vs India, we don't bend our arse over and make 4 flat pitches. Fair enough, Melbourne and Adelaide haven't done much for many years. Adelaide has always been a flat track (as evidenced by the fact that most teams in recent years have got 450-500+ in the first innings), Melbourne has been using drop-in pitches for about 20 years. However, Sydney (spin) and Perth (pace) are the crucial venues where the pitch has offered a lot of assistance to bowlers in the past.

So basically your everyday Mitchell Johnson. Greatest thing the selectors ever did was leave the nuffie out of the side, they should seriously just consider picking him as a Perth mercenary and give him the rest of the year off

Yeah, I'd be happy just to pick Johnson for the Perth test and that's it. Much like Stuart MacGill was picked for the SCG test when Warne wasn't injured. However, MacGill was a lot better bowler at his peak than Johnson.

Untill Johnson learns to how to swing the ball back into the right hander like he did in that Perth test last year, and the previous South African tour in 2009, he will always be a liability.
