Even in Australia at local clubs and pubs i've seen people betting on CGI horse races because there wasn't anything else on. Having said that i'm not sure I really see much benefit in this move tbh, seems like a potentially expensive waste of time.As gambling has become more widespread and acceptable in the US a culture has developed of people that will gamble on pretty much anything and everything. It's sort of like their equivalent of Pokies addicts.
It's totally plausible that the NRL could make not insignificant amounts of money out of the US sports betting market, especially if they can jag a partnership with one of the bigger bookies. Whether or not playing a game there is necessary, or helpful, in achieving that goal is a different question.
The best way to become relevant in other markets is to continue to grow. Sure the NFL has spent a lot of money attempting to expand its reach to other countries and in large part the only reason that has happened is because the NFL and the supwerbowl are a big f*cken deal. When Australians see an NFL game coming here we know it's a big ass sport and it's an event so we show up. I'm not sure the reverse is a remotely similar situation.
When has Victoria ever been touted as a likely 18th team? Also i'd say very few consider PNG an actual viable expansion let alone a front runner.I thought Victoria was the 18th team, so it back to being PNG again?
I'd say the general consensus is that NZ2, Perth and Brisbane 2 will be fighting for the spot. Personally I see Perth as the favourite with the other 2 making up the next round of expansion.
