Broncos overcome Raiders in NRL trial

February 18, 2006 - 10:14PM

The Brisbane Broncos overcame a 16-point deficit to record a relatively easy 28-20 NRL trial win over the Canberra Raiders in Port Macquarie.

Stung when down 16-0 after just 12 minutes, the Broncos reacted with 28 straight points to take the match.

Giant Kiwi winger Tame Tupou scored three tries, showing he may be the answer to the Broncos' wing problem.

The Raiders started like a team on fire posting three tries in the opening quarter of play.

Flashy centre Phil Graham scored after just three minutes on a routine backline move.

Five minutes later hooker Simon Woolford scored after taking an offload from lock Alan Tongue.

By the 12th minute the Broncos looked shaken when Graham crossed his second try after a clever flick-on pass from five-eighth Jason Smith.

But after the 20-minute mark the Broncos kicked into gear.

Tupou scored his first try after a ricochet from a Shane Perry kick and then Justin Hodges scored after a long Casey McGuire break.

The Broncos got in front 12 minutes into the second half when Tupou scored again after a Karmichael Hunt kick.

Seven minutes later Tupou was over again in the corner.

In the 65th minute Scott Minto put the game in safe keepings when he dived on a lost ball behind the Raiders try line.

Raider forward Andrew Lomu crashed over for a consolation try with five minutes remaining.

And arguably our 2 best props in Smith and Davico, right?
Correct, Spongecake is leading the charge upfront, with Reyno in the second row, and Kidley in the number 7 *shudder*

I never knew the Broncs had winger problems..

Bott on one wing and Bennetts love child on the other..

And Tupou was around before Bott as well.

Damn, an all three grade victories would be a great start for Season 2006. Hoping someone has a report when the game finishes are around 11:30.

Well, should something happen (touch wood), hopefully now we've got more than adequate staff and facilites to help the healing process along and try and prevent any further damage. Hopefully...

DAVUI SHINES IN BULLDOGS LOSS
New recruits Namila Davui and Daniel Holdsworth both played brilliantly as the Mitsubishi Electric Bulldogs kicked off their 2006 campaign tonight going down 34-30 against the Sharks in the town of Mollymook on the NSW South Coast in what was the first of two trials to be played by the club.

Coach Steve Folkes named a fairly inexperienced line-up early in the week as he rested several key players. Willie Tonga and Hazem El Masri were both added to that list as Folkes decided to rest the two regular first graders.

With the Sharks naming an almost full-strength line-up they began with a bang as Reece Williams put first points on the board to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs showed some promise in attack however the Sharks were more than capable in defence as they shut down the determined Doggies.

Soon after the Sharks found themselves up 16-0 courtesy of two quick tries to Luke Covell and former Newcastle Knight Darren Albert.

With the scoreboard heavily against the Bulldogs early in the match someone had to step up and show some brilliance, enter Brent Sherwin, placing a well-weighted grubber to find Cameron Phelps who dove over to score.

The try was converted, however Phelps then left the field with a hamstring complaint which will be looked at over the next few days to determine the extent of the injury.

The two sides then battled it out for field possession before the Sharks stretched the margin out to 16 again as Greg Bird crossed the line for the Sharks forth try of the night.

Down 22-6 approaching half time and the Bulldogs found another gear as they posted points via a try to Trent Cutler and a penalty goal to Brent Sherwin, taking the score to 22-14 at the break.

After a fairly high scoring opening half the trend did not look like stopping as Bulldogs new recruit Namila Davui crossed the line to put the Bulldogs well and truly back in the contest down 22-20.

With the momentum now swinging in the Bulldogs favour the Sharks had to find a way to nullify the attack, they accomplished that and more as they scored a converted try to bring a halt to the Bulldogs fight back and take a 28-20 lead.

The Sharks repeatedly threw the ball out wide as they created plenty of overlaps however some determined Bulldogs defence brought it to an end and eventually resulted in turning defence into attack as Davui crossed over for a double to put the scores at 28-24 as the match entered the final stages.

In the end the Davui managed to bag a hat-trick however the Sharks experience shone through as they came home 34-30 winners against a very impressive young Bulldogs line-up.

Bulldogs try scorers:

Namila Davui x 3
Cameron Phelps
Trent Cutler
Reni Maitua

* Watch for Namila Davui. I think he could be nrl rookie of the year. He played Premier League for the Bears for the past two seasons.

Bunnies win Charity Shield
February 18, 2006

Rabbitohs 14 Dragons 12
SOUTH Sydney put weeks of bitter in-fighting on hold to record a come-from-behind 14-12 win over St George Illawarra in the Charity Shield clash at Telstra Stadium tonight.

Down 12-0 at the break the Rabbitohs scored three unanswered tries after the break to record their tenth win in the 23-year history of the annual NRL season curtain raiser, the Bunnies securing back-to-back Charity Shield wins for the first time since 1989.

The first half was the Trent Barrett show as the Dragons skipper scored one try and set up another with a beautifully weighted kick to give the red-and-whites a 12-0 lead at the break.

Barrett, who is yet to make a decision on his future beyond this season with interest from several English clubs, ran onto a short ball close to the Bunnies' line to go over himself in the 14th minute.

Seven minutes later he put a chip kick on the chest of fullback Ben Hornby, who showed good hands to catch the ball and dive over the line in the one movement.

But with Barrett rested for the entire second half, the Bunnies worked their way back into the game, with the 24,566 crowd urging them on with every run.

Their faithful were finally rewarded when Paul Mellor, on his return to Souths after stints with Cronulla and in England, pounced on a Ben Walker grubber to make it 12-4.

A slick backline movement produced a second nine minutes later for Shannon Hegarty, and when Walker converted David Fa'alogo's 59th try, the Bunnies had taken a deserved lead for the first time.

Young utility back Beau Champion then went from hero to villain in the space of just a minute, with the 19-year-old crossing for what he thought was a try only to find himself put on report by referee Steven Clark for a high shot on Dragons replacement fullback Clint Greenshields in the lead-up.

With most of their stars now sitting on the bench, the Dragons had one last chance to snatch victory in the closing minutes.
But former Rabbitoh Willie Peters, who has joined the Dragons on a short term deal as cover for injured halfback Mathew Head, dropped a pass 20 metres out with the line wide open.

SOUTH SYDNEY 14 (P Mellor S Hegarty D Fa'Alogo tries B Walker goal)
ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA 12 (T Barrett B Hornby tries W Naiqama 2 goals) at Telstra Stadium.
