The point about the large number of RL teams in Sydney has long been made - but look at Melbourne and the AFL there. They have plenty of Melbourne based teams and they (for the most part) conjure up consistently huge crowds, crowds which completely dwarf the NRL.

I know it's a different culture, but I think Sydney should be doing better - especially considering when fixtures involve a Sydney based team v Sydney based team.

This year we had a great crowd of 35K to a Bulldogs v Souths match, but people were harping on about it no end. 35K (and greater) crowds should occur more often in Sydney IMO, not every week, but certainly more often. Great crowds should not be such a rarity down there.

Well if you are going to say Melbourne AFL spits on Sydney NRL (9 clubs each) it is equally true that WA and SA AFL with similar club numbers to Qld NRL spits on Qld.

What is your point? Sydney crowds are not good enough. True. Absolutely true. Cowboys with half a state to draw from are below 20,000 this season....not good enough either.

Leave us out of the debate on crowds fanatique. I think we're carrying our share of the load, even in what, for us, is a below aferage year. Misleading lines like "half a state to draw from" (huge distances, travelling times and less people despite the size of the area) don't help your argument when they are so easily shot full of holes.

Let me know when all the Sydney clubs are up with our average.

Bring 6 or 7 more teams within the Townsville region and watch those crowds fall ;-)

Multiply the population of the Townsville region (about 150,000 people) by at least 25 and you might have a point. Per head, there's just no contest between Townsville or even the whole of NQ (well under half a million in the 800,000 sq km from Mackay north) and Sydney.

Well Under half a Million?

http://www.oesr.qld.gov.au/queensla...omp-c01/qld-characteristics-sd-comp-c01.shtml
2001 census has North QLD at:

Mackay Region: 132,533
Northern (Townsville) Region: 183,290
Far North (Cairns) Region: 212,647
North West (Mt Isa) Region: 34,601
Total of North QLD: 563,071

The Population of QLD as a whole has grown by 15% since then as well...

In 2006, 236,175 people in North QLD attended NRL, Representative and Test Fixtures in North Queensland, for a per head count of 42 per 100 people.

the Greater Sydney SL was home to 3,948,015 people in 2001

in 2006, 1,616,393 attended the same type of fixtures...

41 people per 100...

This argument is of course completely contrived. It's a million times more fun to do it with Brisbane than an area like North QLD which clearly doesn't have attendance issues :)

How are we going compared to 2005?

NRL crowds compared to 2005 after 8 rounds

2005 - Total = 1,004,835 Avg = 17,943

2007 - Total = 1,109,137 Avg = 17,893 Decrease of .3%

Crowds for NRL are up by 8.7% on 2005's avg for the season.

2005 - 16,468

2007 - 17,893

Teams home crowd avg above 2005 avg;
Brisbane
Canberra
Manly
Melbourne
New Zealand
Souths
Sydney

Teams home crowd avg below 2005 avg
Cronulla
Canterbury-Bankstown
Newcastle
North Queensland
Penrith
Parramatta
St-George
Wests

So as 2005 was a record year for crowds we are in the hunt to break the record this year. And dont worry if we get 15 and 16,000 crowds over the next 4 weeks as thats what happened in both 05 and 06.

And also figured out what the change in attendance of the sydney teams is (these figures arent exact but are close to the correct figures, becomes difficult and time consuming to go through it all when they play at neutral grounds)

9 Syd teams avg after 8 rounds
2006 - 16,545
2007 - 15,215 - 8% decrease compared to this time last year

This doesnt mean that sydneysiders are sh*t. Just cause we have one bad year doesnt mean that we deserve to have it heaped on us. Its just a statistic, thats all. Either way i know where ill be using my first tax cut whenever we get it.

Dogs and Tigpies aren't doing too much better :(

Some times the stats on their own don't mean too much, especially when it's only round 8.

For example Wests have had only three home games this year. One was played in round two at Leicchardt and drew 15 000 in the pouring rain. If it had been dry weather there would have been 18000+ plus there. The Campbelltown game against the Sharks drew 17000 despite Wests entering the match on a four game losing streak. Their other game was on the Central Coast and drew 19000.

I expect that if Wests can continue to win a few matches then their average will bounce back up.

(That being said I have a feeling this weekends crowd could be a bit disappointing. I remember they played on Mother's Day last year at Campbelltown and the crowd was below expectations so we'll see what happens on Sunday)

I fear there isn't being enough hype being generated about a lot of matches.

Dogs haven't had a blockbuster 32,000 crowd boosting up our average yet...shame though, i thought that would come against the Tigpies last week..maybe against the Broncos or Eels later in the year.

Our remaining home matches don't look promising tbh. There are a lot of Parra fans I know who refuse to go to Telstra for Dogs games I think... a bit prejudicial but they have their reasons.

definately.

The only game in sydney that has been significantly hyped up was bulldogs and rabbits
and then weve had a couple games here and there where people were encouraged to go

every game every week should be hyped up but it isnt. nobody wants to put their mouth on the line anymore because fans, media outlets and anybody whose anybody gives them sh*t for it.

If we cut people a little slack for going around telling the world how good they are people would be more inclined to spruke the show.

To be honest, Brendo, I'd cop a 1000 or two off the crowd average to avoid having a Mundine in every team talking sh*t 26 weeks a year.
