This is what else can be done
  • Less night footy - the highest drawing sports competitions in the world (AFL, NFL and EPL) have the majority of games on afternoons to get big crowds and a few "blockbuster" games at night. Look at Arsenal in the EPL - everytime they play they get a sell out of 60k+ at the Emirates on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon and get the same crowd figure for say, a Champions League or FA Cup match on a Wednesday/Tuesday night
  • More advertising - most people here wouldn't know that their team is playing if it wasn't for the internet. Bombard newspapers, TV, radio etc with news about an upcoming RL match
  • Have a country round where we take games to the bush and other areas such as Darwin, Cairns, Perth, Wellington, Port Moresby etc
  • Cheaper tickets - with petrol prices and interest rates rising by the day, a family of four simply would not be able to go to the footy cause it would cost a fair bit. The AFL have acknowledged this and look how cheap the ticket prices are. I had a look at AFL ticket prices the other day and for some game it costed $3 for an U6 and $7 for an U16. No wonder they get such good crowds ffs
  • Let kids who play RL get in for free - It would entice parents to have their kid play RL and entice parents to go to the footy with them.
OK, that's just a few suggestions but there is still a lot more the NRL can do instead of capitalising on TV ratings.

Hopefully it means a good crowd at the Double Header next week. Manly need the win to stay in the hunt for the minor premiership and a home final, Wests Tigers and Eels both need the win to stay in the hunt for the finals, Bulldogs... well lets hope their members turn up...

Those season averages are all remarkably close for the past four years - all within 395 people.

Maybe that's just the level at which the game naturally sits/draws in terms of live crowds, under the current set-up with the high amount of winter night games, and Fox contract/gametimes/coverage? It would be nice if it was 20,000 average per game, but presumably the NRL/Fox arrangements are more important to those in control than getting the crowd levels slowly increasing.

Great ideas NK but you're forgetting the one vital point:

News Ltd. wouldn't make any $$$ out of this.

So for the meantime, it's in the 'No way' basket.

I think they only way that we will see a decent increase without new stadiums/better transport/better scheduling/better weather is if season ticket holder numbers increase

Season ticket holders will go to games no matter what the time or weather. And if they don't go to the match, the club still has some money

When was the last time you saw an ad on free-to-air trying to get people to the games? Rugby league's presence on free-to-air during the ad breaks is virtually non-existent.

All the ads are on Fox Sports on the cheap and preaching to the converted.

The NRL's cost minimisation strategy continues to hurt our game, while News LTD reaps the profits.

This is what ive thought, if the clubs are making around 100k each home game then why are ticket prices so freaking expensive.

Adults should be around the 15-20 and Children at about 8 or so, more people will turn up, i dont understand....one thing they need to address is ticket prices.

I have read a comment on this forum a few months ago that AFL kids tickets are $3, maybe that's how they get big crowds.

Hopefully it means a good crowd at the Double Header next week. Manly need the win to stay in the hunt for the minor premiership and a home final, Wests Tigers and Eels both need the win to stay in the hunt for the finals, Bulldogs... well lets hope their members turn up...

I must have missed this report, what is this double header you speak off?

It wouldn't make a great deal of difference if they were $3 or 3 times that the AFL would still get crowds. The fact is that a much higher percentage of people down here just love watching their team play live at the ground as opposed to watching them on tv. It's the way it's always been and always will be.

Wests v Manly @ ANZ on Saturday 5:30pm followed by Bulldogs v Parra @ 7:30pm.

Even though it's an away game Parra Season ticket holders get in free, and a double header for the price on none (plus the teams good form) should get a few blue and gold fans there that outherwise would have just watched on Fox.

Why can't the NRL do that the same for every game?

It would entice fans to travel to away games.

Bulldogs, Tigers, Eels, Dragons and Rabbitohs STH's all get into their corresponding away matches at ANZ free of charge. Has been the case for a number of years...
