"2 + 2 = 4" is universal - everyone knows what it means.

"I am, you are, we are Australians" is not universal - certain tribes in Botswana would have no idea what you're on about.

okay but how do you learn about diagnostic tools without language

and even in equations how would you be able to put the correct data in without language, the truth is a combination of both maths and language is essential

Oh ffs.

I do 4 unit English as well and it is pointless as as hell.

It is however, a subject in which my entire workload for the course consists of 3 7 minute speeches and a reflection statement.

I'm not denying that. But you seem to constantly undermine the critical importance of mathematics in society...You do realise without maths, computing, architecture, science..Hell, just about everything...Would not exist?

Pretty much everything they teach you in school has some importance in life. History, geography, English, maths, science...As well as specialist subjects, such as legal studies, business studies, IT, etc...They are all subjects that have something to offer.

I love 4 unit english, I hate going to the lessons, but I love the subject and it finishes soon with no exams so as far as I am concerned it is the best subject there is. And apparently I have fallen in love with the chracter I created. I am doing a short story

Why would you bother with 12 units? Your essentially wasting your time.

The time you put into those extra 2 units as 'backup' could be put into the other 10 so you just don't f**k up..

2008 HSCers are better ;-)

Ditto
I was doing these past Geometry and Linear Functions HSC questions from past years in maths, and as I got to 2002,03,04 etc, they were so much easier then 98,99.

Hopefully the trend continues for next year.

good on you, a career that benifits society and UNSW is the top uni in Australia and ranked number 8 in the world, but the recent issues with their anatomy department leeave a lot to be desired

English is a far better subject than maths, I did 2 unit maths last year and it was just evil, in the exams I would be done 15 minutes because I could not do half the questions and I knew it, I ended up getting 24% in the final prelim exam, I moved to general and get 100%s everywhere, in conclusion maths causes cancer

why would you do extension maths? unless you love the subject and ace it

I love english and hate maths, but if you don't understand maths you are screwed. Maths is the basis of all science (and is the fabric of the universe), whereas English has very little use in the real world....

I am actually quite good at maths, I could teach it, well general anyway

how can you say that english has little use in the real world?
it is the means for communication that we use

Is it? Et en France aussi? Je ne pense pas! English is a language, nothing more. Maths is a set of rules that governs our existence

true that english is noy universal, but in an english speaking country unless you are going to stay within the tiny realms of your community english is vital, so to us it is, even in non-english speaking countries one would be best off learning english
