The NRL is having a rough time with crowds at the mo.
Hope things get better.

Seriously what is it with you and ripping NRL crowds? Isn't England the home of RL? Yet they still struggle to get 2,000 in London. Let's put things into perspective

So what if it is better than England? It's still pretty bad overall.

Its bad only because people endlessly compare it with the AFL. Otherwise, its one of the 15 best attended leagues of any sport in the world. The membership drives will take longer than 1 year to see real growth. People are far too impatient

Not my fault that English Rugby League is sh*t at least the NRL is bigger then the Currie Cup,NPC and Super 12/14/15.

I don;t understand RL fans at all, in other sports the big games will sell well regardless of opposition, performance etc. Look at the socceroos when they are playing some unknown Int team or the Wallabies or even the cricket to some degree. If I was in Sydney I wouldn;t miss a SOO or test match game for love nor money, regardless of how my State was travelling. We don;t seem to get a sense of "event" around RL games like other sports manage to hype up. Probably all the more reason for playing one game in each State and the other in an expansion city.

Plenty of Socceroos, Wallabies and Australian cricket games are not sold out

Updated crowd figures taken from this month’s Rugby League Review that came out today (website: www.rugbyleaguereview.com) –

CROWDS:
In Sydney: 844,063 (51 matches)
Average in Sydney: 16,550
Outside of Sydney: 1,050,029 (63 matches)
Average outside of Sydney: 16,667
Overall crowds: 1,894,092
Average per game: 16,615
Please note:
· these figures do not include last night’s game at Kogarah (too late to make it to print), but do include the remaining matches from round 17 played on Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

· Gosford and Wollongong matches are counted as ‘Outside of Sydney’.

· Sydney teams taking home games ‘on the road ’ (for e.g. Sydney Roosters vs NZ Warriors in Christchurch, Souths vs Melbourne in Perth) are counted as Outside of Sydney.

The Sydney media do not help. The Telegraph has taken great delight in letting us know that Origin tickets for this game are worth virtually nothing. Despite the fact that the alleged 99cent ticket (which was just the starting price on ebay) actually went for 48 bucks.

it doesn't help when the media continually put the boot in at every opportunity. They are just hurting the brand of Origin by doing it.

Sydney media isn't the issue. It may look likes its taking the piss, but its only giving the public what it wants to read. I bet that story you mentioned, despite being misleading, was a popular story on the site.

Its one thing to have Telegraph putting taking the piss, and say..Melbourne media. I dont think Sydney media hurt the game at all. Also Im not sure they are hurting the SOO brand at all

Yeah those sort of stories have people lining up to go to the game. A must-see event.

you f**king muppet, Suncorp sells out in 30 mins, the only reason the capacity is only 52k is because of the short sighted attitude of the qld government at the time, if we had an 80k seater stadium, it would sell out in about 2 hours, don't think otherwise.

When QLD played Origins at ANZ (the QLD ANZ not Syd) there were games not sold out. It is in one of the 6 million other threads on this very same subject.

The point is they don't hurt the game. People may not be lining up for entirely different reasons, not because of what a paper is writing stories about. Do people think the public reads the newspapers, sees an article like that, and decides not to go? Living in dreamland if you do

Well I'd like to think you're right.

The media does its best with stories to control public opinion and that's exactly what it's doing here, so they can write a beat up story if/when there's a poor crowd tomorrow evening.

NRl doesn't have to cope with the Premier League or cope with the fact it is predominantly a Northern sport whilst all the media is southern based and run by public school RU types.

yep that's exactly what happens! it's why companies pay huge sums for PR. hype and expectation sell tickets. you think all those people who bought tickets to the Olympics were badminton or weight lifting fans?

super league tri-series aside, you will find that there were only 2 games during Origin that have been played at the old QEII, one had about 49.5k and the other 48k. The capacity of the stadium was 50k, thats as close to a sell out as f**k is to swearing IMO.

They were both sell-outs. The 49.5 one (the langer comeback game) soldout in 48 hours (long before people knew ALF was coming back). And this was for a game played at the sh*tiest stadium of all-time (QEII)

The people that bought tickets to the Olympics are sports fans, event goers, and generally people wanting to witness one of the top sporting events in the world. You can attend the NRL every year; the Olympics doesn't come around very often, especially on these shores. You shouldn't really compare them to crowds in at club level.

I don't think attendances have anything to do with lack of hype. To use your example of the EPL, most of the games have an outright favourite particpating. Over the course of 380 odd games, maybe 20-30 will be genuine contests. Yet most clubs sell out stadiums on a regular basis. Why? Not because of any hype factor, rather attending is entrenched in the culture. And thats what needs to happen in the NRL. Membership drives a good start, but as I said earlier, its very naive to expect to see that culture of non-attendance change overnight. Could take a good 10+ years, but I suspect we'll still be talking about crowds up until that culture has changed.
