im guessing this was a joint bid to get the funding by the dragons, gong council and maybe a prospective wollongong a league team?

I don't believe the proposed South Coast A-League team were involved in the submissions.

It was really the Illawarra Venues Authority (i.e. the Wollongong Sportsground Trust), WCC, Saints and the local state member(s).

I'm sure the potential to attract an A-League team or A-League matches was part of the sell though.

As for unhilling, would that even be possible with the hill-side of the ground being so close to the beach?

The pic of the new stand is gorgeous, especially with the ocean in the background. Would be a shame to see the hill go, but I suppose that will happen with progress and so forth.

Not clear from this shot, but yes:

Similar in basic structure to the northen stand.

Lower tier with corporate dining/media/coach facilities at the top.
Upper tier above that.

Public concourses on ground and second levels. Corporate/media/coach facilities on first level.

Huge roof providing 100% coverage of patrons.

Are there going to be multiple changing rooms in the new stand - or is it going to stay with the home team using the Southern Stand?

All facilities for players and SGIRLFC/IRL/NSWRL/NRL officials will be in the sourthern grandstand. As part of this development there are some minor works in the southern grandstand to move some of these facilities from their old home in the western grandstand.

The only facilities in the western stand that are not there for spectator comfort are:

1. Coach and media boxes.
2. Camera platform.
3. Player benches/dug outs.
4. Four 140 square metre lettable commercial spaces (shopfronts) on Harbour Street.

Ground officials and production will continue to use the facilities in the northern stand and in the hut on top of the hill. All players and officials will be in the southern stand.

I never seen a stadium like that so close to the sea,it's beautiful.
What is the Illawarra fan base like?,is your average persn on the street a League fan and with having such a coll ground right by the sea why were crowds low in it's virgin years of the 1980's.

Traditionally the Illawarra is very much a league area, having produced 2 immortals and a helluva lot of internationals over the years. These days there is also a pretty large soccer presence, alot of ethnic groups etc (for example there are 28 clubs in the main soccer comp, each with 2-3 sides).

But yes, in general your average person will be a rugby league fan.

Crowds were low in the 80's in general. Bar Parra and Canterbury comfortably the worst decade for rugby league crowds i think (upswing probably happened around 88 with the introduction of Newcastle and Brisbane). Not to mention, looking at scores, they were some god awful Illawarra sides in the 80's

Anyway, first really sh*t weekend with crowds, and at least two were rain effected (NZ and Newcastle). Not great but, barring a very low panthers turn out, none 4 figures is good.

Next week should be a bit better, although not brilliant

Wests vs NZ - 15K
St George Illawarra vs Parra - Sold Out (approx 18.5K im guessing)
Cronulla vs Brisbane - 14K
Nth Qld vs Manly - 15K
Melbourne vs Canterbury - 18K
Souths vs Penrith - 20K
Gold Coast vs Chooks - 12.5K (although this could be real low, judging by the Tits lack of support and poor form of the chooks, Monday night in the middle of nowhere).

Penrith's crowd may not have been fantastic but surely was expected. Even with our Origin stars we'd only get around 13k at most on a Monday night. Alright crowd considering.

Monday night is a crowd killer, you can generally add a few K at least to get what the crowd would've been on a reasonable day to watch football.

Everything about it is a crowdkiller, besides it being on a week night it starts earlier than say friday night footy - less time to get there from work etc.

Purely for primetime pay TV, we wont maximise our crowds while it is still there.

Penrith are avg'ing under 14k this season, which is very weak for a succesful team, so tonights crowd was no surprise.
