2011 Jersey & Sponsorship Discussion

Interesting comments about the jersey itself, and the sponsor:

Tigers change stripes, billionaire back

THE Wests Tigers will today unveil a new playing strip for 2011 along with welcoming billionaire property tycoon Harry Triguboff back into the fold as a major sponsor.

Sitting comfortably in the top five Australian earners on BRW's rich list for 2010 with a personal fortune of $4.2 billion, the return of Triguboff is a major power play by the Tigers.

Triguboff famously severed ties with Wests Tigers after the club's ill-fated inaugural season a decade ago but thanks to some skilful negotiating from CEO Stephen Humphreys, big Harry is back.

The Tigers have also slightly altered their stripes for next season, as seen in this new strip modelled by Beau Ryan and Chris Heighington at the club's Concord headquarters.

"The jerseys are awesome. Believe it or not the players actually had a fair bit of input into the design of them and we couldn't be happier with how they've come out," Ryan said.

"There's a Lycra strip down either side to allow the material plenty of breathing space and the collars are designed so you can't try and take blokes' heads off.

"They're a good fit and a good feel. As a matter of fact Chris and I wanted to take them home but the club wouldn't let us."

The new-look jerseys are another predominantly Humphreys initiative, with the club wanting to continue to recognise its Western Suburbs and Balmain heritage but also continue to grow as a merged entity.

"One of the issues has been that the black jumper was seen as a throwback to Western Suburbs and the orange one was seen as a throwback to Balmain," Humphreys said.

"We kind of want to get a bit beyond that now and create something that is a Wests Tigers identity rather than a throwback."

On the acquisition of Triguboff, Humphreys said: "Harry doesn't back losers so we're taking that as a compliment and we'll make sure he gets a good return on that investment."

Worst jerseys I have ever seen. Since Wests Tigers started in 2000 they have had about 500 different jerseys and no 'traditional' jumper.

Why can they wear the Balmain jersey at home (identical to the old one) and wear the Wests jersey at away (identical to the old one). Why is Humphreys saying they want to get away from the old Balmain or Wests look? What's wrong with connecting to your history? St. George Illawarra have embraced the Dragons and Steelers in their home & away jersey designs next year.

I emailed Stephen Humphries and this was his response:
Hi hybrid

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.

I don't know what jersey designs you are referring to as we have not yet finalised our plans and have certainly not released any designs.

Whilst of course we will never please everyone with decisions on such a subjective item as jersey designs, we aim to strike a sensible balance of varying opinions, commercial opportunities, preferences of our players and a range of other factors.

I'm confident that when we reveal our 2011 playing strips in the coming weeks they will be well received and, importantly, will emphasise and leverage the unique features of Wests Tigers.

Thanks again for your note and your support of Wests Tigers.

Kind Regards
Steve

I bet they are the same...

You poor bastards!

It sh*ts me to say this because I hate saying anything nice about them, but the Dragons really have done a good job with their jerseys. They haven't chopped and changed constantly and they haven't tried to create some artificial mutated hybrid version. The Tigers could learn a thing or two.

They should wear the traditional Balmain jersey at home in 2011 and the traditional Magpies jersey away and then they could switch every couple years if they really wanted to just to treat both sides of the merger evenly. It is painful to watch them bring out sh*t jersey after sh*t jersey when they have 2 classic great looking ones sitting in their closet unused.

I don't agree that we should be wearing Balmain and Wests strips. In fact, I agree with Humphries that we should create our own identity, however wearing this horrible strip isn't the answer.

Black. Orange. Gold. A V design. f**k me, it should not be hard to create something that looks nice.

Why do designers always feel they need to overcomplicate things? What's with all the mess on the sides? The wavy style design below the collar? The stupid pattern on the socks? FMD just KEEP IT SIMPLE.

One (of the many) great things about being a Saints fan is being proud of our jersey and identification.

We now have 2 simple, traditional footy jumpers that mean so much to both our key regions.
