INJURED Blues star Kurt Gidley has anointed his Newcastle Knights team-mate Jarrod Mullen to fill his utility role in the NSW Origin squad, declaring Mullen has the 'X-factor' to make a difference off the bench against the Maroons.
Gidley, who was told yesterday his season is officially over and will go in for shoulder surgery next Tuesday, says of all the potential contenders for the bench role, he believes Mullen offers the most value.
"In the role, you don't get a lot of time on the field so you need someone who can come on when called on by Ricky (coach Stuart) and spark something," Gidley said. "Take advantage of a tired opposition.
"Mullo has great acceleration, he's strong and I think he has shown everyone this season how good his defence is now.
"His kicking game out of dummy half if he comes on at hooker is another string to his bow and he can cover quite a few positions elsewhere.
"I think he would be a great option for the Blues. Playing the dummy-half role won't faze him at all."
Gidley said he spoke to former Blues great Andrew Johns about Mullen on Sunday at the Knights-Roosters game: "Joey thinks Mullo would more than handle it and I reckon he would as well,"he said.
"Nothing against some of the other players being thrown up - they are all quality players."
Gidley's worst fears about his own playing future were realised yesterday when he was told his year was over.
The Knights captain has suspected as much ever since he badly dislocated his left shoulder against Penrith a week ago.
But it wasn't until yesterday morning he was told by shoulder specialist Dr Des Bokor in Sydney following scans late last week.
"I'm going in next Tuesday for the surgery," a shattered Gidley said.
"I asked him if there was any chance of just trying to rehab the shoulder again and trying to play on this season.
" He said I could try but he couldn't guarantee it wouldn't dislocate again a week or whatever down the track."
So that settles it. Utility spot is filled.
