Very strange that these 2 players wouldnt aim to play in a stronger competition, with both been very capable, especially with Groom aiming to play for Fiji at the World Cup and enjoying a fair amount of success with Asquith over the last 2 seasons.
Money talks!
Valley will blitz the Manly A Grade comp, going to be a very weak competition it seems

Dont really think it matters where Groomy plays I am reasonbly certain there are no better Fijian halfbacks out there and lets face it, a stronger comp means tougher games and more risk of injury. Stevens is a bit hit and miss for me having played against him for a few years, but Groom can still have a heavy influence on a game.

Manly A Grade is in deep trouble as I have said many times and it aint getting any better!

joker or ram man do you know the final make up of teams in the manly comp this year

If past seasons are anything to go by, which is a given with this competition and how it is run, you will not know the final make up of the comp until probably a week before the season starts. They couldnt even put out a draw last season...it as a six team comp and we were basically told week to week who we were playing.
Add to that they made some last minute decisions last year about 3 days before the comp started regarding the make up of the competition. Avalon were slated to play A Grade last year but at the last minute, they were put into the reserve grade competition and acted as reserves for Manly Cove.

Yeah thats a blooper, Brendon for Wenty, Nathan for Tigers.

Tuigmala went well in the first game and that would be expected.

In the second game I could identify a lot of the Mounties but besides Tuigmala and Waters the only wenty players I knew were Danny Howard, Matt Hunt and Charlie Herekotukukuku, so a little hard to pick out the standouts.

The Bulldogs beat Newtown 36-14 today at Belmore after leading 22-4 at half time. If the team lists were correct the Bulldogs had their second tier players on in the first half and 12 regular NRL players in the second half.

On the other hand there were 10 that have played for Cabra on for Newtown in the second half. So well done Cabra a 14-10 loss to the Bulldogs NRL is not a bad result.

Ha Ha Just checked the Newtown site - League Unlimited had the teams around the wrong way, so Cabra lost 22-4 to the Bulldogs State Cup team in the first half.

Western Suburbs and their history in the Metropolitan Cup

When Western Suburbs run onto the field for their first match in the Ron Massey Cup in 2013, they will become only the second club to have played in all 3 levels of senior NSWRL competitions (the other being Newtown).

The Magpies have played at the elite level - NSWRL 1908-1994, ARL 1995-1997, NRL 1998-99, second tier level - NSWRL First Division 2000-2002, NSWRL Premier League 2003-2007, NSW Cup 2008-2012 and the third tier level - Metropolitan Cup 1990-92, 1998-2000, Ron Massey Cup 2013 -

This is not the first time that Western Suburbs have played at the third tier level. The Metropolitan Cup was revived in 1990 primarily to cater for the needs of the larger junior clubs such as Ryde-Eastwood, Wentworthville etc. A team from Western Suburbs also entered a team and they played all home matches at Orana Park (now Campbelltown Stadium) and were the only Sydney district football club to do so (Newtown joined the Metropolitan Cup in 1991).

Wests first coach in 1990 was a true Wests man, John Jacobs who coached junior reps and eventually reserve grade for Wests in the mid 1980's under Ken Gentle. Players such as Andrew Willis and Bronko Djura played for Wests that year as did future Western Suburbs NSW Cup trainer, Darren Moon.

In 1991 & 1992 the side was captained by another great Wests man, Alan Fallah who also did the coaching alongisde the fearless John Bilbija. In 1992, the team also had the legendary Trevor Cogger playing for them.

Whilst the sides were competitive, they could not compete against the big money spending clubs such as Ryde-Eastwood, Wentworthville, Guildford and the likes and at times struggled. The team gave young locals an opportunity to play at a higher level with the chance to push for selection for higher honours such as reserve grade or even first grade down the track.

After 1992, Wests pulled out of the competition however in 1998 they would return.

In 1998, a Western Suburbs team from the old district entered a team in the Metropolitan Cup and played all their home games at Concord Oval. The side was funded by Wests Ashfield and acted as a feeder club to the Western Suburbs side in the newly established NSW First Division competition. Wests coach in 1998 and 99 was former Magpie first grader and lower grade coach, Brian Cook with another former Magpie first grader, Mick Pinkerton was assistant. In 2000 yet another former Magpie first grader, Mick Liubinskas took over as first grade coach.

Again, Wests struggled in the years 1998-2000 due to being unable to compete against the bigger spending clubs such as Ryde-Eastwood (who ironically had used Lidcombe Oval as their home ground with the competition began) and eventually funding ceased after the 2000 season and Wests dropped out of the competition (which later became the Jim Beam Cup and Bundaberg Red Cup).

In 2013, Western Suburbs will be again coached by a former Magpie player, Leo Epifania who is no stranger to the competition having played in the inaugural Metropolitan Cup season in 1990 for the now defunct Bankstown Greyhounds (their home ground being adjacent to the Greyhound Social Club at Yagoona) - a side coach by former Western Suburbs first grade coach in 1986-87, Steve Ghosn and Guildford.

I believe that Wests are trying to align some games with Wests Tigers at Campbelltown but other games may be played at their training base in Warwick Farm, not far from Cabra.

good to see the draw up for the season. Good to see the Magpies back in their own entity.

Also got a question on home grounds - where will the Kingsgrove Colts be playing at? Will it be at Beverly Hills Park? And will they play a game or two at Hurstville Oval (i think that's what happend in 2011)?

Hope they can play somewhere other than Beverley Hills Park. That is not even fit for u/6s

Agreed, went to watch a game last year and the field was disguisting. I dont know how they even let games be played there. Hopefully they do something bout it this year. Also hope wests play their games out at campbelltown stadium. Looking forward to seeing some cracking games this year.
