I worry about exactly this - well almost exactly this

My eldest daughters best friends support Souths, Tigers and err no one
She often tells her friends "tell my dad you support the Dragons, that'll piss him off" - she's 11. I've tried to interest her in the Roosters but she has no interest really in anyone. Better that than the Dragons imo. On the plus side she did enjoy coming to the ground on the occasions we went.

My youngest "goes" for the Roosters because I do, but she hasn't shown a desperate desire to go to a game. She wants me to take her to a football (round ball version) game to watch Sydney FC.

There's still time for both of them to decide to follow someone other than the Roosters in League. I will not be happy if that happens.

You support Easts

Shouldn't sydney fc becoming a more "cool" club to follow in the year you win a premiership show you what the innocent unbiased perception of your club is.

Seems to be a unique rl thing to actively support a rival team to your parents just to piss them off

Soccer / AFL / Union all seem to have whole family's follow the same team

Imagine a Scottish kid supporting rangers instead of Celtic. His dad would actually murder him

Which is a bastardised abbreviation of the word association, as in association football.

My kids were both taught "go the Dragons!" and "boo the Broncos!" as some of their first words. They appear to be toeing the line thus far.

Good DNA. Strong parenting. Clever children. Congratulations.

yep literally no choice, my firstborn was indoctrinated at birth

At matches at ANZ and Allianz i do see a lot of families which are mixed in terms of support e.g souths and roosters, eels and bulldogs seem to be two common splits

She wants to play football and therefore wants to watch football

I just asked her what team she supports and she said Roosters
Good girl!

its called soccer

As Jason pointed out, word Soccer is a nickname for ASSOCIATION

In the late 19th, early 20th century the English called Association Football "Soccer" to distinguish it from Rugby Football

Later Association Football became so dominant in the UK that having a nickname seemed pointless as 90% of people referring to football were talking about Association Football and not other versions of football.

Soccer went out of fashion in the UK, but the nickname stuck in the US and Australia where other codes of football became dominant.

Heaps of sports use the word 'football' as part of their full name- Rugby League football, Rugby Union football, American football, that embarrassing game they play in Victoria etc- soccer can cop being called soccer.

It's soccer in almost every English speaking country.

And football in 90% of the world!

As said the very few countries who refer to it as soccer are those countries who have a different game that uses the word football ie pretty much just USA and NZ Australia.

Who gives a shit what you call it, as long as the person/people you're communicating with know what you're talking about.

Living in Melbourne, I can tell you that completely not the case with AFL, Im constantly amazed how families, even siblings will support different teams.

In my family, my middle brother still supports the Broncos, but otherwise is considered to be an outcast by the rest of us.

True - but I grew up in England and old habits die hard
To be honest, I don't care if people call it soccer. I care more they know why it's called soccer.

It's funny, the people that don't like it much or follow it much call it soccer, where the people that like the game refer to it as football. It's almost as if soccer is meant in a slightly demeaning way.

But back to memberships - Roosters are aiming for 20,000 and are over 8,500. This figure should jump in January as it hasn't been updated for a week or so. 20,000 seems a tall order as last season we were at 13,751. Does anyone think we're a chance of making 20,000 this year?
