We need a traditional halfback. I like Maloney but he doesn't offer that.

On Bird, If he wasn't such a shit merkin I'd take him in a heart beat.

I really don't think we're going to sign Bird. The club is trying to get the supporters back onside and signing someone like Bird would be a weird way of going about that.

How so? Most fans want to see more locals.

If Scott leaves which looks almost certain bird is a must. Hed be our best player with daylight second.

Midley was saying a couple of weeks ago that the club had gotten a lot of feedback from fans saying they want the club's recruitment to centre around signing blokes that are good citizens as well as good players. Bird certainly isn't in the former group.

I'm also unsure if Bird is still at the level where the club would be willing to risk potentially upsetting some fans to sign him. There's no doubt at his best he's a very tough yet skillful player...but I personally haven't seen that Bird in a while.

I'm certainly not one to say no to bringing in players with a history...but I think we would be really, really stupid to bring in someone that's in the middle of drug trials given our history. We don't need that kind of publicity while the club is trying to reconnect itself with the fanbase.

You would assume his signing would be dependent on successfully sorting out his legal issues

Not even the knights are dumb enough to do anything before that

If the legal process goes down the normal route you'd say it will drag on for a very long time.

Even putting that aside for a moment though: do we really want Scott's replacement to be a guy that glassed his girlfriend and then tried to pin it on his mate?

We can do better than that and it's very rare I say that about the Knights.

Everyone makes mistakes and that was six years ago. Couldn't care less that he enjoyed some rack on his bucks.

Buzz saying Scott definitely signed with eels so off field stuff aside, there isn't a better replacement.

Me too but if it's for a family reason I can't hold it against him.

Trust Rothfield to break this right before we play the Sharks though. Pathetic but I guess it's the nature of the media. They don't give a shit about his team mates.

NBN just said it's a 1.5 million dollar deal for the three years. Personally, u feel Beau is worth that a season as a player who is only getting older and will be more injury prone, maybe Para are paying overs?

Beau is really our pack leader and someone who typifies what a Newcastle player should be. I'm not sure if we can find a replacement quickly. I wish wish wish we never let Cuthbertson go.

Snowden seems to have stepped up as a leader and I got the feeling from the Sims brothers video the other day that Tariq sees Newcastle as a long term option (Good opportunity for him, place for his daughter to grow up). Plenty to build the pack around. Believe Rochow will grow into a natural leader, club captain at some point. If Smith gets another year then there's plenty of grit remaining.

Losing Scott sucks, he's been one of our best players regardless of how the team plays, but it does free up a spot for Tapine to get regular first grade experience. We're not absolutely f**ked without him, we've got enough quality to move on, I do just worry about a lack of leadership when we hit low points.

People need to get over the cuthbo thing. He got a deal that we'd be crazy to try and match. Its time to let it go and move on.

Gagai extends Knights stay

The Newcastle Knights are pleased to announce centre Dane Gagai has agreed to a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the Club until at least the end of season 2017.

“Clearly Dane is a talented player and has been a wonderful addition to our Club but he is also a fantastic person away from football and in the community and that is certainly taken into consideration when building a team,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“We understood there was a lot for Dane to consider with his family based in Queensland, but we made sure Dane knew he was a part of our long term plans.

“So while negotiations can be drawn out at times, we are happy to see Dane re-sign and commit to Newcastle.”

Gagai joined the Knights midway through season 2012 from the Brisbane Broncos and has played a total of 64 games for Newcastle.

“This was a really big decision for me and my family,” the 24-year-old explains.

“I owe the Knights a lot because they gave me a chance when the Anthony Griffin let me go in 2012, but I still had a number of factors to consider in making this decision with my family living in Queensland.

“I am really happy the decision has been made because I am enjoying my football and I love it here.”

Gagai is originally from Mackay and says the similarities to Newcastle make him feel at home.

“I have been made to feel a part of this Club from the minute I arrived and everyone was just so welcoming,” Gagai added.

“I don’t think I could have left the boys to be honest and I like where the Club is going and I want to continue to be apart of it.”

The outside back primarily played on the wing and fullback before joining the Knights but has arguably played his best football in the centres since making the switch.

“I am not getting too far ahead, but I want to win a premiership with this Club,” Gagai admits.

“I want Newcastle to be proud of us as a team and if we could win a premiership, that would be the ultimate.”

A nice big f**k you yo Bennett and Brisbane especially after what they did with him.

Well done Newcastle. Retaining great talent left and right. Mata'utias, Korbin, Tariq if we want to stretch it and now Gagai. Next, Snowden!
