There is a lot more competition for there dollar now also.

I feel though that early mid March hardly feels like it's even supposed to be footy season

Sydney FC were playing across town the same night.

People will keep laughing at that as an excuse but there's undeniable impact every time other sporting events concurrently happen in Sydney.

Even so, coming off a win and nothing up against it, opening home game of the season - 10k minimum should've been the expectation. Interesting times ahead in Canberra.

The weather, especially last week couldnt be called football weather. But over the last 5 to 10 years we have had some big crowds early season.

Yes their is more competition for our dollar and we have become very picky on what we spend it on. People will spend big money on big events. Unfortunately the run of the mill premiership game is not a big event.

There is an anomaly in that comparison with A-League - the 06/07 season had 18 rounds from memory, the competition is now 27 rounds long.

I realise there are a lot of anomolies when comparing over time. A league has gone up from 8 teams to 11 or 12 then back to 10 and AFL has added suns and GWS. Also union has only 5 teams and a short season. Just making the point that none of the codes have powered ahead recently.

Theres 4.5million people in sydney, surely it can't be that big an impact? I've never heard Chelsea or arsenal say their crowds were down as there was something else going on in London. Reality is RL us just not that popular in Sydney as we would like. The NRL has set itself an unachievable goal imo and seems to have no idea how to reach the goal it has set itself.

You're essentially saying there are no bi-codal fans, which I know amongst my own personal friends is quite common. I'm not saying it shaved thousands off the crowd but it certainly is notable.

As for "there's 4.5 million in Sydney" - sure about you can bet several million of them don't know or care about sport. Especially those who've migrated here and have their own communities and lives.

RE: my point - simple fact is scheduling needs to be thought out. Both the WSW clash on Friday and SYD clash today could've been avoided.

Re: Today's crowd - Very underwhelming. Would have thought 30k was very achievable and realistic. Historically, I can recall a few 27-28k crowds between Roosters and Souths on Sunday afternoons. Still struggling to improve on that. Reality is it's still too tempting for people to sit at home and not venture out. Also wonder how much of an effect the media has had on attendances on two fronts: i) New Ltd convincing people the NRL, through the ARLC, is going down the drain ii) Media convincing people that crowds are rapidly deteriorating in numbers leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy of people not attending

The game is such a soap opera off the field that the on field action is sometimes neglected. But the NRL also needs to do more to work with the clubs and the clubs need to work with each other to promote games.

I also think they need to look more at ticket prices because based on today's attendance supply is exceeding demand.

I agree that there needs to be more promotion and ticket prices should be lower, but it also feels like there have been specific games in the past with plenty of promotion (I remember some Bulldogs games in the past) and fans still failed to turn up. Rugby League fans seem to be very unpredictable

Some worrying signs. Manly, cronulla and raiders are never going to be well supported clubs but to be getting 10k or under at the start of the season does not bode well.

Our crowds are dismal, and trying to look forward to another weekend of refs sending every try to the video ref, who then look at 10 replays trying to find a reason not to award a try, is doing my nappa in.

The Cows, Titans, Storm Warriors and even the Broncos all being belted from pillar to post every weekend is killing the game.
Two refs yelling out penalty penalty every tackle is killing the game.

It is not hard to see this is a Sydney comp, most Sydney teams are origin strength across the park while all those teams above are merely pub-teams.

Crowds will continue to perish. Only when TV viewers start to disappear will the NRL realise they have tunnel vision.

The refs and video are spoiling the game, killing the enjoyment, taking away the thrill, turning the code into a borefest.
Why have away teams if your going to penalise them out of every contest.
The travel itself is hard enough.
