I'd even say a second Brisbane team, a second NZ team and Adelaide before Perth now.

There doesn't seem to be as much traction in WA as there was 2-4 years ago.

And their WC Pirates bid has gone dead quiet. See or hear nothing from them these days.

EDIT : WCP last entry on their FB profile page is April last year. Their WCP branded website is March 2013!!! Hmmm...

Still, Perth is a good time slot. Maybe they can have an Adelaide side who plays 1-2 games a year in Perth.

apart from the record crowd last year, the three new jnr clubs that have just started up and the even quicker ticket sales this year? What you need to remember about the Pirates bid is it is now in fact an NRL owned bid given the WARL have been taken over by the NRL. Since that happened the bid has fallen silent, obviously at the say so of the NRL. If that is a good or bad thing time will tell.

Mate, was just trolling.

I have said Perth as team 17 all along.

I can't see any reason not to really, they just need to make it happen now.

Big ratings, just as I predicted

Just looking on tv, anything over 30k would be good. The bigger tv ratings will make up for it, hence the reason why Ch9 wanted the rescheduled time at 4pm leading into Nine News (and the subsequent Sunday evening programmes).

However, not so big ratings for City-Country. Seems like the QLDers didn't give a stuff about it, and hence why the NSW vs QLD Residents game should've been in that timeslot instead of City-Country

Great numbers for the test. I couldn't imagine them being much higher if the game had been played on Friday night.

The city/country game also drew good numbers for a game that kicked off before 2pm.

I wonder if Friday night tests might be changed to Sunday arvo with those ratings?

it gives the fixture genuine credibility considering it rated so well outside of primetime. Networks would see it as 'if only' it was in primetime on a friday night imagine the ratings rather than more sunday arvo fixtures.

Awesome ratings for the Test.

Good Sydney ratings for city v country. Brisbane people do not give a stuff and why should they. As mentioned earlier, Qld Res v Nsw Res should have been shown in Bris.

Yeh, the CvC really should be killed off (and probably will be by the next tv deal).....

Its a shame though. The Country brand still has a lot of love in regional and rural NSW. The problem is more about the matchup; why would anyone love or hate City in this day and age??

I reckon its a loss that the Country badge and jersey werent planned on one of the NSW regional teams in the 80s. Newcastle, Illawarra or Canberra, in particular, would have been great for a CRL franchise.

There probably is still a way to save the brands, but (like the AllStars clash) the matchup cant stay as it is and remain relevant...

I dont think they want to be accused of abandoning the country. But its passed its used by date. The country areas may like it, but in terms of a national competition, a competition and sport with international dimensions, can they afford to keep city/country going at all at this stage.

If only we could sweep up the country people and have them involved in something bigger. Hey, state of origin. I dont see the C v C leaving being a problem either.

BUT - if its slots into a weekend like it does atm, so be it. However I have zero interest in it. Its expendable to most of the country, even if it rates accordingly to a small nrl matchup; which I guess makes it useful in justifying its existence.

I think as time goes on, it will stop being played. Maybe thats 2017, I'd lean toward thinking that. BUT! x 2. In saying that, its nice having all the little cups/competitions. In a reduced round NRL season maybe players/people won't mind playing/watching

your post was objectively worse

From the sydney morning herald.

The Test in Brisbane on Sunday was watched by the biggest capital city audience for any football code this year, with 939,000 viewers tuning into the coverage on Nine and Gem, comprising of 541,000 in Sydney, 319,000 in Brisbane, 60,000 in Melbourne and 19,000 in Perth.

In comparison, the Collingwood-Essendon AFL match on Anzac Day was watched by 758 691 viewers in the five capital cities, while the biggest NRL audiences were for the Rabbitohs-Broncos (729,000) and Roosters-Broncos (691,000).

In addition to the Australian television audience for Sunday's Test, there were another 272,000 viewers watching in New Zealand on Sky Sports and 34,000 who tuned into the free-to-air replay on Maori TV.

According to the Rugby League Ratings twitter account, the Kangaroos are the second-highest rating national sporting team on free-to-air television in the past six months, behind the cricket team.

Great figures in NZ as well.

I have no idea why people continually call for City vs Country to be axed. What is the downside? Yeah it doesn't rate well but it is usually a good game and a good tryout for the NSW origin side, and it's only one game anyway and scheduled for the Test round bye. Who cares if Brisbanites don't give a shit about it.

How about replacing it with QLD Residents v NSW Country? Or Brisbane v Sydney and QLD Country v NSW Country?

To have City v Country in a national competition just goes to show that the NRL is still the NSWRL competition on steroids.

The sooner Brisbane/SEQ gets another team as well as Perth and 1-2 Sydney clubs that are holding back the company get moved on the better, but that's for another thread

as long as its not leaking tens of thousands of dollars who cares.

There are more effective ways of spending the time and resources...

Even if it isnt an economic loss, there would have to be other opportunities that would produce greater returns.

As to the neglecting of country NSW, there are better ways to connect with the non-sydney populations than sending a single, low quality game to Wagga (they dont even have the guts to go somewhere new since the Port Macquarie clusterf*ck).

Just don't show it Brisbane. Keep it NSW only.

if people are so worried about QLD's giving zero f**ks about CvsC, why not make it a collaboration of both states. Qld Nsw country vs Brisbanne Sydney city? Or better yet, make it national? Obviously it would skewer the whole pre selection for origin, but does the current format really mean much in the way of the selection process anyway?
