They also had the most glorious Saturday afternoon timeslot with epic weather, better prices and amazing opposition support. If we had swapped timeslots they would have got like 15-17k and we would have made 34-37k.

Give it a rest. f**k.

I think away support is the biggest factor, more hawks fans tahn lions.

NRL THINKS BIG

IN a bid to whip up a Blues frenzy, the NRL will run its biggest pre-game entertainment program. The lights will be turned off and a giant 35m ball will be rolled out to the centre of the ground and used as a movie screen for a nine-minute video on the history of Origin.

MORE THAN 80,000 TO CHEER ON NSW

SUCH is the anticipated late rush for tickets, management of ANZ Stadium has added an extra 1000 seats for Wednesday night?s blockbuster.

The NRL and the stadium are now predicting a crowd of more than 80,000, further emphasising that building a new 55,000-seat major-event stadium in Moore Park was a dumb idea.

Despite the fact the Maroons have won nine of the past 10 Origin series, the Blues are a different proposition when they are playing in front of their fanatical Sydney fans.

The Blues have a 4-2 advantage over the Maroons at ANZ Stadium over the past five years.

When game one has been played at ANZ Stadium, the Blues have won six from eight, and they only lost game one of last year?s series by a single point.

This gives me the shits. Every year they seem to spend all of the marketing budget on origin, which is the one product we have that sells itself. Surely diverting more time, money and effort towards the regular season would boost the NRL signicantly

Another year, same arguments.
QLD supporters more passionate then NSW, apparently.
NRL claiming they're close to a sell out and papers saying still lots of seats available.
I think it's the same every year, regardless of what you hear they simply just don't sell out in Sydney and a lot are given out, discounted and re-categorized as a result.
Ofocurse the NRL will never admit that for the sake of all those fools who dumped almost $300 down the toilet on those diamond seats.

haha cheers mate. i've been on here for about 3 years now and it's as though we have the same arguments and debates every year.
expensive tickets, crappy scheduling, run down stadiums and the fact that we have too many teams in Sydney all contribute to poor crowds here in NSW.

You obviously cannot build an SFS type stadium for every team here so until they redevelop ANZ/SFS and teams such as the Tigers, Sea Eagles and Dragons buy into it and start playing out of those stadiums where you have something to build on not much is going to happen to raise crowds. Even then people have to buy into this which in itself will be a good 10 year plan.

Then what do you do with the Panthers and Sharks who are even further away from these big stadiums? I don't have the answer to that and neither do the NRL. By the looks of it they have just accepted it for what it is and they're concentrating on generating more $$$ via TV money which is far easier for them hence all these Thursday Night football games.

The Broncos are really the only team in any position to get good crowds and make $$$. They have the stadium, population, weather, infrastructure and a town that really gets behind them.

Given what we have in Sydney I really can't see too much changing for a long time and we just have to get used to these average crowds. A game on a Thursday night even between the 2 better crowd drawing teams like the Dragons and Rabbitohs will not draw many people.

Just gonna have an early crack at these crowd predictions:
CAN V MAN 13k
The Blackness V BRI 14K (Brisbane is a big draw in NZ)
NQL V NEW 17K
MEL V PEN 16K (first home game in a while)
SYD V WES 11K
SOU V GLD 16K (could be higher but many attendees in the past have been kiwis)
CBY V CRO 13K (could be a lot higher if not MNF)
